Default Cutting my Marlin 1895 barrel?

Ok,don't flame why...just a legal question can I cut my Marlin 1895 which is 18 1/2 inch to 16 1/4 ?

I think the min. legal length is 16 for the barrel. But can I legally get this done?

A while a go I handled a Marlin 1895 in 16 1/4 and I really liked it. I wasn't able to find one and bought a 18 1/2, but just not the same..

Yes you can.
I just built a guide gun from an older 444 Marlin. Cut barrel to 16-1/4 and installed ghost ring sights and scout mount. Refinished the whole shebang in matte black Gunkote.
Just don't cut barrel any shorter that 16" and the whole gun must be 26" or greater overall. Measure barrel length from the closed bolt face.

The brush gun version of Marlins are my favorite. I have it in all their calibers but the 444 and 450 Alaskan. Go without the porting if you look for a factory barrel to work with or just want to buy a factory built version.

DO IT!!! Additional Marlin addicts and info can be found on

I have heard some good things about these guys. They do lots of work on Marlin 1895s. They can do a complete rifle build up or specific services like cutting and re-crowning your barrel to 16.25"
