Default Bedding the barrel at the receiver

What are the pro's and con's of bedding the barrel at the first inch or so ahead of the receiver? It seems half of the rifles with a heavy barrel I've come across are bedded this way so it's not a universal bedding method.

If your receiver is weak, it helps to support the barrel.

Every time you rebarrel, that bedding needs to be routed out and then re-done with the new barrel.

The best solution for super heavy barrels is to use a reciever with a full bridge across the top that does not need to have the barrel bedded.
