I use Mark Lee Express Brown #2 to protect the steel and then Oxpho-blue.

Once happy with the coverage I make it look worn.

Here's the process I use:

Operation bfpu includes the following......
Mark Lee - Express Brown #2
Oxpho-blue
Kroil
0000 steel wool
240 grit sandpaper
Heat-gun
Acetone
Cotton wool balls
Cotton rags
Forceps
3m pads

01. Remove all crud/rust with Kroil and 240 grit sand paper
02. Wipe off with 4"x4" cotton rag - Toss rag
03. Prepare surface with 0000 wire wool - Wipe with new cotton rag- Toss rag
04. Wear clean gloves
05. Clean with acetone and cotton wool balls until hardly any dirt is on the balls - Toss balls
06. Shake the crap out of Express Brown #2
07. Heat metal work area to 150-200 F with mapp gas - (Used laser temp reader HF $20 special)
08. New Gloves
09. New Cotton Ball with forceps
10. DO NOT EVER DOUBLE DIP BALL IT WILL CONTAMINATE THE BOTTLE
11. Apply lightly in an even manner in a set area - (I do 10-12" at a time) for about a few minutes.
12. Clean off with clean rag - If the coating is a nice even brown then go onto the next step - If not go back to step #07.
13. Rinse the whole gun off in water and dry it - This stops the rusting process.
14. Prepare surface with 0000 wire wool - Wipe with new cotton rag- Toss rag
15. Wear clean gloves
16. Clean with acetone and cotton wool balls as before - Toss balls
17. Shake the crap out of Oxpho Blue
18. Heat metal work area to 100-150 F with heat gun - (laser temp reader)
19. New Gloves
20. New Cotton Ball with forceps
21. DO NOT EVER DOUBLE DIP BALL IT WILL CONTAMINATE THE BOTTLE
22. Apply lightly in an even manner in a set area - (I do 10-12" at a time) for about a minute.
23. Throw ball away
24. Let it stay on the surface for 1 minute then remove excess with a clean cotton rag (4"x4" cut up)
25. With the receiver i used one ball on each side
26. Once coating is complete on the desired piece/part
27. Use 0000 wire wool lightly on the surface - Wipe off with clean 4"x4" cotton rag - Toss rag
28. New Gloves
29. Clean with acetone and cotton wool balls - Toss balls
30. Goto step 6
31. Do this until you are happy with the finish - I did it FOUR times to get he finish i was happy with
32. Coat surfaces with cotton rag soaked in kroil
33. Rub lightly with 0000 wire-wool - wipe off with new cotton rag
34. Use 3m pad lightly on areas you want that really worn look
35. Wipe with kroil rag
36. Stand back and admire your work!!!

Warning - This process took me 2-2.5 hours to get the look i wanted

Very nice write up, bro. I like that battle worn look, it gives it character.
