Default How to age single action colt finish

In the photo of 7 1/2” Usfa gunslinger that came with aged finish you can see almost no bluerd fiinish and very small pits making this new gun look old. In the picture with a Usfa 5 1/2” barrel with case hardened frame and blueing show the gun I want to change to the finish of the gunslinger. What is the best way to do this? Open to suggestions for DIY, or sources that could do the job in Los Angeles area preferably.

Cannot hurt value since colt clone and has no factory warranty so have at it.

Ammonia will strip the blue right off, start with a diluted solution. If you want to scuff it up a little a green Scotchbrite pad will get it done.

You could always do a fake cold hardening. Results look pretty good, but obviously it's just for look.

Vinegar would probably also do it. Take the grips off. Get a Q-tip and soak it in vinegar. Put a drop on the grip frame. Wait and see what happens. You can also do the same test with ammonia or a rust remover like EvapoRust. See which one gives you the result you are looking for. If none of them work or you change your mind, you can cold blue those spots - put the grips back on and call it a day.

But I would definitely do tests on an inconspicuous part of the gun before I went all-in.

USFA do have a serious fan base. The guy who made them went nuts and built the Zip gun a few years back and killed the company. There won't be any more and they are valued by many.

There is a chance you will be lowering the value.

Proceed with caution. Good luck.

I did this one by removing the finish with vinegar, Then I cold blued it and then put it in my tumbler with walnut media for polishing brass.
