Default **Academy Prep**Renamed

So, I (Finally!) am attending the academy starting next month. My orientation is tomorrow 7/9 and I just realized that dress code was not discussed during my phone call where I was informed that I got accepted. My default plan is to dress the same as my interview (suit), and bring some changes of other clothes just in case. Advice?

I'm going, so I changed the name of this thread.

You should never be faulted for being dressed better than the guy next to you.

Business Attire.

Change of clothes in your car is good.

So very true, but seems to be lost with the current generation.

I showed up in a suit and unpolished boots (I didn't know anything about polishing at that point!), but should have gotten rid of my beard and shoulder length hair beforehand. Somehow I'm still employed.

Thank you all! I think I'll be set then. I just got a haircut today, will be shaving tomorrow, and rocking my suit. I'll be bringing my DD214, DL, and something to write on and take notes. Anything else I should bring?

A nice suit is always a good choice, but don't go too expensive on it. Comfortable shoes that are appropriate for the attire are best, you may be on your feet for quite a while, or worse. Oh wear dress socks, that go with the suit, don't be the guy in white socks in a dark suit, someone will notice.

Good thing to have but if you are sponsored by the sheriff's office, then they will provide you with all your LDs, Gear, and fees. I'm not sure what academy you are going to but you should already have your PT and class B uniforms from a uniform supply store prior to orientation. You usually get your duty belt, and gear a couple weeks into the academy after they wreck you and weed out the weak

I had on a suit and wingtips. The Staff Officer chewed me out for not wearing boots...dont expect a warm, welcoming, environment on your first day, week, or 3 months. At least not at CHP academy...

Well orientation went great.....for me. A few people showed up in jeans and t shirts and didn't get a warm welcome. I think I'm ready, but I can tell "DAY ONE" is going to be a full day beat down.

You should dress in a black shirt, black tie and white shirt to be safe. The drill instructors will tell you they are evaluating you from that day.

When I went through, they made females and males that were not dressed in business attire stand in the front of the class and made an example out of them. Some didn't show up for day one.

Based on my own experience in the academy, avoid suits that are purple, red, yellow, or any shiny garish colors.

White patent leather shoes with big pirate buckles should also generally be avoided.

If you have the time and can hang on thru the commercials and interviews of some of the cadets, you might want to watch some episodes of the old Fox TV reality show of the mid 2000s called, The Academy." It features cadets going thru the LASD Academy at STARS. Although the academy is back at Biscauliz (where I went) and the class number is in the low 400s now, you can obtain an idea as to what to expect.

Also, I hope you are in shape now, because the academy is no place to get in shape. Some of the cadets evidently believed they would do so as evidenced by their physical appearance (overweight). Many failed based just on that aspect alone.

Just remember, the staff make the rules and the rules can change from minute to minute. One last thing, if there is a female DI, make sure you don't say, "Yes Sir or no Sir." They really dislike that and you will be writing memos. The cadet in front of me did so frequently and it was really difficult for those around us not to laugh. Knowing we'd get in trouble too kept us from doing so.

Congratulations and good luck.

Sounds like I know which academy you got into and I know your RTOs. Yes, they will beat you down. For those that were wearing anything less than a suit, they will all be remembered.

There should have been some "must haves" come Day One. Make sure you have them, remember them, and know them. Hopefully, someone in your class (again, if this is the same one I'm thinking of and it's sounding like it is, then she did) got a list of everyone's info so knowledge could be spread around for everyone. Take heed of that past experience.

Good luck.

Yes, you are correct. We are grilling those with prior experience for everything they are allowed to tell us. My mission is memorizing mission statement, greetings, and door protocol. I'm not overweight at all (5'10" 170lbs), but I have always struggled with pushups. I'm doing as many pushups as I can throughout the day every other day while running on the days in between. Go time is near!

A few ways to get better at pushups are to increase your core strength, strength in those target areas, and endurance.

High and low planks are good for increasingncore strength, full range of motion pushups help increase strength (all the way up, all the way down close pretty much touching the floor; or hands off pushups), and being able to bust out as many pushups as possible in a time frame help with endurance.

Our academy made the actual uniform something to earn, before that it was always business attire. Even after getting the green light to wear the uniform, when we screwed up it was back into suits again.

Interesting approach. Academy uniforms (jackets, shirts, caps and pants) were issued to my class; paid for my the SO.

People in my class -- who all had offers from the SO in hand -- just had to worry about not failing more than 2 LDs in a row. If that happened, you got busted out immediately. You could retake the academy at your own expense the next session but, if you failed again, the job offer was revoked.

So I've been doing planks all day with my Eberlestock pack on my back. I can hold it for about 3 minutes before I give out. What about boot polish? Is this good enough?

PTM, have you thought about taking someone else's life? Would that be always ok, never ok, sometimes ok... ?

I have thought heavily and searched my soul inside and out for years actually and have come to my conclusion regarding this. My limited prior experience has helped me reach this decision.

I would research that a bit. In our academy boots were not allowed. Low quarter dress shoes (not coroframs either)

sounds like you were prior military so you know the drill. Assume cameras are everywhere (classroom) and that you are being recorded and watched by the tact staff at all times. Because you are

That's a good shine, and unless rules have changed, duty boots are allowed as long as they have a good shine.

We were not allowed to wear boots unless it was range day or scenarios.

Black suit, white shirt, black tie. Don't show up with a purple tie and gray suit. Unless you want to stand out which would be fun for everyone else
