Default Bolt-Action, Tube-Fed .22?

I'm poking around for a .22 to teach my nephew to shoot with, and of course the project starts getting out of control. I had just settled on a CZ-455 standard when I came across the Marlin XTR series of tube-fed bolt actions.

I have a weakness for tube-fed magazines.

However, it looks like they're not in production, or at least everyone is sold out.

Are there any other options out there? Are there any still in production at a similar price point ($250-$350)?

Get him the Henry 001. If he's a very good boy get the Golden Boy for him.

I had a Marlin bolt .22 when I was 10, I would have died for a real lever gun.

Warm him up on "The Rifleman" on AMC Saturday mornings.

Thanks. I went there this morning and checked them out. Just currently sold out, and will be doing a production run later this year.

I appreciate the suggestion of the Henry, too. Only issue is that I'm not buying a rifle for my nephew. I'm buying one for myself that I want to use to teach him to shoot. I like bolt actions over levers, and I have a weakness for tube fed magazines.

Otherwise, I'd have just ordered a CZ-455 yesterday.

That's a nice one... I have the 455 and two 10 round mags.

Marlin 19 round tube would be cool.

If you were close I'd sell you a marlin tube fed bolt cheap. With scope and composite stock. I picked it up at an estate sale and really don't need it but it came as kind of a pkg deal. Wouldn't be worth shipping something that you could get used in your area for cheaper by the time shippibg, DROS, ffl receiving etc hassles are done.

Have you considered used?

I came across a Remington 512 that was still in great shape. I got it very cheap.

Great shooter too.

I have begun considering used, yes. I went into a local shop to see a High-Standard made JC Higgins single shot, but it was sold before I got there. I should have taken them up on their offer to call me when something else came in. Maybe I’ll go back next week and look again, and put in my name for both.

So I’m going to take my own thread off course. Ultimately I’d like opinions on these three options:

CZ-455 standard
Marlin XTR22-TR
Used “Classic” tube fed bolt action

Let me explain how I got here. I was looking for a single shot trainer and focused on the Savage Rascal. I came across the Rock Island M14Y. Reviews said nothe shot okay but not great. Since I want to use the rifle after training is done, I want it to be a nice shooter. I considered getting an Escort .22 which is a riff on the CZ.

Then, I thought how much I really like shooting my Smith 41, because it’s just such a quality piece. That got me thinking that if I’m going to have this rifle for 30 years, maybe I should just get a CZ-455 and have something I’m proud to own. They are modular and I could get a youth stock for it for training.

Looking at reviews online drew the comparison to the Marlin XTR. I have and like a Marlin 60. I like tube fed mags for some reason. But it’s only available in synthetic stocks. I could get an aftermarket wood stock and still be about the same price as a CZ-455 with a spare stock.

Which leads me to the used market. Remington and Marlin both made wood stocked rifles.

Down side of all this is that I’m moving away from my original premise of a single shot trainer!

Thoughts?

Always buy quality. A cz 455 are very nice I have a cz 455 ultra lux and just picked up a cz 455 mannlicher. Both rifles speak of quality at about around 500.00 dollars a piece. The wood and finish are very nice. Not to forget top notch accuracy. I really enjoy both of these rifles.

I found a "used" Marlin 881 at my LGS with an old Bushnell Scopechief on it for $125. Bought a Rifle Basix trigger and installed it, and ended up with a tube-fed bolt that will shoot with my CZ 452V (also with a RB trigger.) I bought it because it was different, and keep it because it shoots so well.

Mossberg 46B if you can find one used here or on Gunbroker. Very nice US-made 22s and they eat anything you feed it. I have one that probably 70 years old and it shoots great.

If the CZ Mannlincher was currently available, I would buy it tonight.

I had previously looked on the CZ site, but didn’t see the stocks available. Did I miss it?

Updated to add: at $300 for a stock, I think I’ll stick with the options I’m working!

Bought my cz mannlicher a month ago from gun effects in la Puente. It was on display, last one they had. Cz has already brought out the 457 series. Doesn't look like there's a 457 mannlicher or ultra lux being made anymore.

I'd been looking also, can't find any new models of tube fed bolt action 22s anywhere. I've found older Remingtons but most weren't grooved for a tip off scope. Winchesters tend to cost a bit more. Got a nice but older Marlin 781 with a Japanese Bushnell almost by accident when buying a few pistols. Was only $100.00 and looked like it just dropped out of the box.
