Default Dry fire drills what do you do?

With the cost of ammo or just the unavailibility of ammo right now, what drills or practice do you do to train at home? I need to get some practice in somehow, just sucks that I can't afford to shoot lol

I do a lot of dry fire practice from the holster with this:

http://www.laserlyte.com/products/lt...on-tyme-target

and practice malfunction drills.

Trigger control (know exactly where it breaks).

Sight alignment and follow through as hammer falls.

Transition from target to target (driving the sights there).

Strong hand, weak hand dry firing.

Hand to hand transfer drill.

Sight picture to sight picture mag changes.

Sight alignment and transition from target to target with trigger pressure applied just to the point of break, but not quite. Done while walking on a treadmill (teaches you to shoot the sights while shooting on the move). Trying to time the shots with foot position is a Loser when shooting on the move, just learn to shoot the sights.

One handed gun grabs from flat table surface (teaches you how to pick up a pistol AND get a good grip). You don't always start shooting from a holster.

All sight pictures are done using a series of post-it notes stuck on a wall about 6-8 feet away.

What do you use as a laser source - LTS training cartridge or the universal rod (LT-Pro)? I can't decide which one is better.

I had a Lt-Pro, but it quit working after 10 shots. I now have the 9mm cartridge, so far so good.

Are you serious? Might as well be running an airsoft then. The only way to know any gun you have will work is with live ammo. For example I just bought a Kahr CW9 and put 100 rounds thru it after the USPSA match last Saturday. After I run 1,000 or so rounds thru it, I will put it on my permit.

I run 200-400 rounds thru my Glocks every weekend at a match so I know they work.

Are YOU serious?

So, you're recommending the use of live ammo in my residence when practicing malfunction drills to stay sharp. No thanks. But you go right ahead.

You never answered my first question. Have you ever had factory ammo not go bang?. I guess not because you don't have any ammo. And you didn't say how old you are, I guess because your mom has to buy your ammo. I don't do dry fire drills, I do live fire drills. Thats how you know your gun works.

Hey man,
Check out Ben Stoeger's 15 minute dry fire program. It's very effective and time efficient.

The answer to your question is, I don't use live ammo when dry fire practicing at home. So, can't answer that.

Also, I have plenty of ammo, thank you. Exact amount posted on here, but since you can't read, you can't do a search either, I guess.

If you don't do dry fire drills at home, then why did you even participate in this thread? Get your eyes checked (and your condescending attitude at the same time).

There are a small handful of guys that troll this forum and he is one of them. They really like to be condescending toward.. well anyone not in their crowd, but mostly focusing on the non-competition folks. So I'm kinda surprised that he fired one off at you since you didn't mention anything "tactical". Oh well, best thing to do is ignore their comments.

If you're on an android, I use this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...m.stimer&hl=en

It has sensitivity settings for dry fire and a "random delay" option for the buzzer up to 10 seconds. Handy if you can't convince the little lady to spend half an hour standing behind you pressing "start".

I use drills found in Steve Anderson's book as a basis and integrate tips and tricks I've learned from other people as well as their unique dry fire drills. One of the things that helped me a lot is to actually dry fire my live fire practice.

I plan to buy and airsoft which I think was a great suggestion mentioned above. They make these things exactly like the real gun and you can at least get the feel of the gun while practicing.

The issue is dry fire is only going to get you a little feed back but not do much good after a certain amount. You need to shoot live ammo and practice. Maybe get a .22 pistol just to work on basics.

I totally disagree about dry fire only being useful to a certain extent. I am a firm believer that more dry fire than live fire will get you better faster, than the other way around.

Validate your dry fire every so often with specific live fire drills and shoot some matches. But 75% dry fire and 25% live fire is better than the other way around for fast improvement, especially for those who are early in the learning curve.

10 hours of dry fire and one hour of live fire validation per week and a match or two a month is going to get you to master class a whole lot faster than the other way around. Whole lot cheaper too!

Airsoft is a useful addition to the process, but not a hugely great thing on it's own IMHO. Nothing beats pulling through on the actual trigger you will be using and learning to keep the sights rock steady while the hammer falls.

And that would help at a indoor range for bulls eye shooting. No way is it going to help you shoot on the move more then actually doing it at the range.

What game do you shoot?

USPSA, 25+ years.

I practice shooting on the move dry-firing while walking on a treadmill. I know what works from hard earned experience, not from armchair quarterbacking.

How about, you, what game, what experience level?

Yes I would completely agree live fire still needs to be done, I am just trying to supplement dry fire into my training, as we al know ammo prices and availability is a little unpredictable at the moment. While I have have ammo, I'm am being conservative in my use of what I have until our hobbies future becomes a little clearer.

Thanks to everyone for the links and tips. Please keep them coming. I am of the attitude that you can always learn something no matter how much we think we know or how good we think we are!

SuperSet also recommended the first book below and I in turn recommend both eBooks ($9.99 each):

In the first one in the Training Tools chapter they talk about Dry-Fire as well saying: "... for every live-fire trigger press, you should accomplish 5 in dry-fire."
  1. Champion Shooting: A Proven Process for Success at Any Level [Kindle Edition] Jay Hirshberg (Author), Ben Stoeger (Author)
  2. Champion Shooting: Guaranteed Results in 15 Minutes A Day [Kindle Edition] Jay Hirshberg (Author), Ben Stoeger (Author)

Yes to the Steve Anderson books (printed format only):
  1. Refinement and Repetition: Dry-fire Drills for Dramatic Improvement
  2. Principles of Performance: Refinement and Repetition 2

Note: You save $6 if you buy both together.

On Monday, I ordered the Laser Ammo SureStrike Laser Training system's SureStrike Ultimate LE Edition which accommodates 9mm, .40, .45 and .223. It was highly recommended by a shooting buddy. I may eventually get the 3” Electronic Target for instant feedback. As is, the small targets that comes with the kit have to be observed for hits whereas the electronic target gives an audio feedback on hits.

Indeed. Dave's upcoming video on Dynamic Dry Fire Training should be a great one.

We did some of his dynamic dry fire drills at his CombatSpeed Pistol class on December 15-16, 2012. Very structured, rhythmic and encompasses two hands as well as strong and support hand only. Like everything with him it's all about thousands of repetitions.

Looking forward to it.

You can't read. How many times have you had factory ammo not go bang? At the range, or where ever you actually shoot at.... And how old are you? Both questions can be answered with numbers.

By the way, what competition venue did you say you shoot?

Oh, never mind, you didn't, that's because you don't.

Now that I'm back from the future and can report no serious ammo shortages the error has been corrected.

We have a saying in the Philippines:

Literal: I hope you speak with an angel's tongue.

I hope so too.

If not, I'm picking up archery (olympic, competition, tactical, hunting and self-defense) with recyclable arrows.

If that fails back to stone axes caveman-style!

Youtube has a video for the IDPA qualifier
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYpKGHFDaOw
I run it through my blueray/wifi player hooked up to my TV. Shooting the tv from 6 ft away, practicing tactical reloads with snap caps is amusing to my kids and pets.
