Looking for something as close to the OC/SB/Riv. county line as possible. We'll go to Hodge, if we have to but hoping there's some a little closer. Elsinore area would be fantastic if there's something legal.

I thought Hodge Road was closed to shooting.

So is this Nichols / Elsinore place legit as private land or what? I read all three pages as it seems it is not good or those who use it went underground.

Thanks.

I think Hodge is only open to shotgun for in-season hunting purposes and only west of the 15. I dont think all BLM land is open to target shooting. I ride that area and have seen people target there but too many CHP travel that area. Would not want to chance it. Be safe and please clean up everything.

As mentioned previously, this is not BLM land and it is not legal to shoot here. Why the mods will allow specific coordinates to this location, posted publicly, baffles me. This place will turn to trash sooner than anyone realizes it with directions like these out in the open.

Visited this place yesterday from about 11am to 2pm for the first time. Pretty messy, definitely not being taken care of. On my way in, I passed two Riverside Sherriff cruisers leaving, when I spoke with a few guys just finishing up they informed me that the LEO were mainly looking for "AR" type rifles and any high power center fire. They had no problem with shotgunners and pistol fire.

We went there this past weekend, my buddy knew how to get there, its off Nichols Road. It was actually really easy to get to, however there was one caveat. When you're on an unrestricted range like that you cannot always have confidence that the other people out there have common sense and know their weapons handling safety rules.

We were shooting for about 30 minutes, and another group showed up with a shotgun and flagged us from about 200 feet away. We left shortly thereafter partly because we were out of rounds but mostly because we didn't trust those individuals being able to properly handle their weapons.

There is an enormous amount of trash there, more than a company of Marines could police call in one day. Other than that it was an awesome day; we only put a couple hundred rounds down range but it was a great experience and I will definitely be going back.

Just my 2 cents on the topic. Also, we did not see any no trespassing signs. We might have missed the sign but there was nothing blatantly obvious when we turn down the dirt path to get there.

The county recently replaced the signs. They also took pictures. I was heading in there saw it happening so I decided to watch.

This area is very near to my home, but I don't know where it is. Like to find a local place where I can shoot my .22's.
I understand nobody wants to give specific locations publicly.

If someone could PM me I'd appreciate it-Im one of those people who knows how to clean up and be safe.

Only interested if its legal though-a visit with law enforcement and/or a ticket isn't my idea of a good time.

It is not legal according to BLM and RSO. Although if you make it there jackasses have been leaving their trash for years. Your better off going to Christmas tree lane in Perris.

Yes, it was closed in the last week or so for fire restrictions. I went in to the local BLM office to verify on Tuesday.

according to the BLM land map, the area on the other side of the hill from area that people are using as a range is BLM - unfortunately it may take a 4wd to get there!

Same here. Lately I've been told that this area is now within city limits. Risky.

I can confirm this area is no shooting as I work for the Lake Elsinore Police Dept. The problem is this gents:

There are 2 residents in the area that started complaining about the gunfire to the city council. After a lot of research, ,it turns out the property is indeed within the city limits, and the main "impact area" is actually a wildlife preserve. As such, we have been instructed to patrol the area more regularly. Now, myself and MOST of my partners prefer to issue warnings and just send people on their way. A few *****s will issue citations. But previous posters are correct. The area has been destroyed and is absolutely littered with trash and spent shells. Signs are posted, but just as soon as they are posted, they are damaged, grafittied or removed. The way the City ordinance reads though, signage does not need to be posted, as it is your responsibility to know the city limits.

I am an avid shooter myself and just send respectful people on their way, I dont want to even look at their weapons. If you are contacted by law enforcement, set your weapons down on your tables or tailgate and show a little courtesy, 99% of the time you will simply be asked to leave.

I've heard of this place as well. Did you ever get a chance to go? If so, is a truck/suv needed?

Thank you for not bringing down the boot on those of us with manners. I haven't been out there since the spring. Went out there with a few buddies and there were about 30-40 people out there when the PD came through and told us it was a no go. One younger officer was very cool about it and explained that it was within the city limits (maybe you?) and told us about xmas tree lane.

As we were packing up another older fat officer came by and unnecessarily tried to rile us up. Asking us why we were taking so long getting packed up that it looked like we were just shooting the **** and he was gonna "haul our asses in." Not sure what his issue was as we were quickly packing up, but making it a point to properly secure/lock all of our weapons and clean up our casings. We were very polite to him, yes sir, no sir. But damned if he wasn't an a-hole.

I can understand why that place got shut down though. Utterly destroyed with trash and metric tons of shot shells, broken appliances and the like. Not to mention the knuckleheads that didn't know the first thing about safety, and the groups of gangbanger types rapid firing all over the place.

I stay as far away as I can from areas that are overwhelmed with trash. I feel dirty just being in the general vicinity of that kind of mess, almost as if by allowing myself to set up and shoot in that kind of environment I am condoning the behavior of the animals that created it.

Hey guys, just came across this thread and am bummed that the Nicholas area got shot down, though it sounds like it was pretty trashed, which is unfortunate. It is so important as a shooting community that we leave no trace.

Anyways, I have been looking for somewhere outdoors to shoot my precision rifle that is closer than the barstow/victorville high desert area...which of course is always windy as heck. Its tough to get a good 100y zero out there. Plus its about a 2.5hr drive for me.

I am in Orange County near the Hwy 74. If any Calgunners are willing to PM any spots near Big Bear or Elsinore. I'd really appreciate it! I typically shoot 40-50 rounds in a day, pick up every piece of brass (I reload) and I ALWAYS pack out double what I pack in.

I been to the place of off Nichols rd. Last time was late May or early June. It's a nice spot. There were other people there. One of them said he's been coming there for years and never had a problem. I plan to go in 2 weekends when I get my stuff out of gun jail.

All closed for fire season. Best bet is to visit the range meet up or clean up threads for research.

There are houses on the other side of the hill, some ones horse got a stray bullet, now they are patrolling more, but cops only give warnings, so I will keep going there. If you got an old tv or propane bottle bring it nobody cares.
