hello all,
Just got back from my first Front Sight Class. I have a couple of comments re: Costs and overall Front sight experience. Costs: There are folks paying anywhere from $0 (if excluding the membership cost) - $500 in my 4 day defensive handgun class last week. No matter what the costs, its definitely worth it. Bottom line: find an existing member to buy or transfer your membership. I was lucky and was able to get a diamond membership cheap ($130..from a guardian member) and an ambassador membership for my son (at the same cost). The Front Sight Experience: I would highly recommend the course to anyone that has not taken it; especially for folks who already own or plan to purchase a personal fire arm for home protection and/or CCW. For my next comment, I want to quality that a distinction needs to be made between checking if is the fire arm actually Loaded, vs. Loading the fire arm (to make ready for firing), vs. unloading the fire arm (to make safe). I’m not sure I agree with the method provided to unload the firearm: They have you check the chamber, unload the magazine and then remove the bullet that is still in the chamber. One should assume the gun is always loaded (rule #1), so I would think checking the chamber first is a moot point, and instead the procedure would be to release the magazine, remove the bullet from the chamber and then check the check chamber & magazine to make sure it’s not loaded and safe? Pros: Check in procedures and fire arms/ammo check Good location away from city etc. Geography = Desert and folks are repeatedly encouraged to drink lots of water. Staff is focused and watching all attendees for safety, and available to enhance their learning individually as needed. All time is well used and spent. There is not one wasted minute. course pre-requisites. I think this is an excellent idea. In all reality not every one is safety conscience and having observed a few peeps (last week), I would be very leery of those types of folks being allowed to enroll in the next level or advanced courses. They are going to get some one killed! Example the woman on my right kept saying sorry (meaning she was sweeping folks with a loaded gun and didn't always have her finger off the trigger). Seriously, do you want to have these folks in your advanced class? On the same note, ego aside, if I don't meet the passing criteria for a course to advance, then its a no brainer to repeat it right? Repetition = learning, and the courses are FREE. Cons: There are no breaks from the start of the class until lunch including after lunch until end of day. There are no bathrooms near the training area for Day 1 & 2 The main restroom facility is a bit far; 4 minutes walk each way. 10 minutes is about right for a break. First two days are 10 hr. days; which is rather intense for anyone who has driven from Vegas or outside of Pahrump. Summary, I would go back again every 6 - 12 months to keep up on the skills. My Recommendations to the Front Sight org/staff: Add 1 -2 porta potty’s (i.e. between 1E and 1D, 1C and 1 B) or add a 15 minute restroom break at 10:00 am and 3:15 Pm). Cheers!
