To lap or not to lap
So I recently purchased a leupold vx-2 with the STD 2 piece dovetail bases and STD extension rings. I mounted the bases and was wondering about lapping. I want to mount the scope properly and was curious how many people actually lap their rings. I would hope the leupold rings would be quality and not absolutely need to be lapped to get a good hold on the scope. So what do you guys think?

Lap
It gives the best fit between the scope and the rings. For all we spend on optics, toys and ammo, a lapping kit will last forever

I think Leupold describes their rings as not needing to be lapped. However, I went ahead and lapped mine on a Savage 116. The bases were standard. Here is a blog I wrote on the experience:

You do not HAVE to lap the rings. It is better if you do. I have 1'' and 30mm kits if you want to come by and lap them.

I guess I should say when you did you first check after a bit of lapping did it look as it was removing material evenly or was there some noticeable unevenness?
