USAA
Do not know if this has been announced but I just logged on and the membership guidlines have expanded to include:
* Military retirees who served honorably, regardless of when they retired * Military personnel honorably discharged on or after Jan. 1, 1996 * Widows and widowers of military members killed in action while eligible I STRONGLY encourage anyone who has never been a member to join up! Robert

USAA has the best cutomer service I've ever experienced over the phone or via email. Their employees really seem to care about their jobs, and they are always courteous, dilligent, and relentlessly helpful.

Been a member for over 20 years. USAA simply does it best. They've been my company for both car and homeowner's/renter's insurance the entire time. Not a single complaint against them.

I've been a member of USAA for over 25 years. Prior to '96, eligibility was limited to commissioned officers. In '96 membership was opened to enlisteds. To keep the eligible membership down to a size USAA could handle, it was decided that once you left active duty (separated, not retired), only enlisteds and officers who had recently separated (i.e. '96 and after) would be eligible. If you retired from active service at any time, you're eligible for membership.

USAA is hands down the best bank that I have ever been a member of. The best customer service and the best programs for its members out there. A few years ago, before they setup their online check deposit feature, they even had an account with UPS and you sent in your checks for deposit overnight express on their dime!
Their pre-negotiated car prices are not bad either. I got a dodge charger for $400 over dealer invoice through them. Another program they used to run was a $75 "rebate" for buying your newborn's first car seat. Yeah, they go above and beyond for their members. |

Honestly, I've had some ups and downs with them but all-in-all, they're FAR BETTER than BofA or Wells Fargo. A lot of people used to try to convince me to move to WaMu. I even considered it a few times. BOY, am I glad I didn't do THAT!!! |

Deposit At Home
It used to be if you didn't get it with in two years of separation you couldn't get it unless you were retired. Now Pretty much anyone who served can get it which is great. So my previous advice would have been get it while you can, but now it's just get it. It's the best bank I've ever used. I think my favorite part about USAA is the deposit at home feature. If you've never used it, basically use you just follow the steps on their site, use your scanner to scan a check into their system, and it is instantly deposited into your account. You can just rip the check up when you're done. I use it to transfer money to my USAA checking account by writing myself a check from accounts held at other banks. When I need the money transferred fast, it's instant vs. the regular transfer time of 2 or 3 days. USAA is awesome!

We have USAA, but I've never used their bank. I do like the Bank at Home feature though. When I do set up a bank account there, I'll most definitely use that feature.
As it is, I LOVE the customer service that I've gotten from USAA. It's by far better than most places I've been to or had to call on the phone. If you're eligible, you need to at least get into their system... it simplifies things later when/if you need other services from them. |

Never knew about the scanning/deposit feature, that's great!
A couple years ago they had a special overnight feature where you could overnight deposits from any UPS store. They canceled it pretty quick; the UPS store person told me that she'd heard it was costing them $44 per envelope and the response was a LOT more than they expected. That's probably when they came up with the deposit-by-scan feature -- much less expensive. Greatest company in the world, IMO.

+1 I love USAA. I am a young male, california, sports car...The lowest quote I had was in the mid $300 per month for full coverage!
USAA gave me a good driver discount and I am paying under $200 per month for better coverage than anyone else. My dad finally talked me into the switch, he has been with them forever he is a vet also.

Thing with USAA is that they trust their members (justifiably so; IMO most military folks take honor seriously). When my brother was in college his Jeep was broken into and his entire CD collection was stolen. USAA just wrote him a check. Other insurance agencies would, I think, have been quite skeptical of a teenager making such a claim.

I worked for Wells Fargo for quiet a long time and I was always impressed by how much USAA toppled our rates by.
My entire family has been with State Farm (which is outstanding) for over 30 years, however, I called USAA and they straight up gave me the same quote as my State Farm agent... and State Farm's price for me INCLUDES loyalty factor. I'm still with State Farm, but I intend to go USAA for my home loan. |

Been a member myself since 1994, they are my one-stop shop for banking and insurance. Their auto insurance can't be beat.

USAA rocks! My insurance is WAY cheaper than I could get it from anyone else. I even moved my checking and savings account over to them since they give rewards on using your check card AND they refund ATM fees that other banks charge to use their ATMs. Not to mention, their accounts pay about 5 times more in interest than Wells Fargo does.
I also recently opened up an investing account and credit card with them too. Also, if you're in the market for a new car, check out their car buying service. They can get you a great deal with zero haggling. Every time I call them, I get an English speaking person who is very helpful. I have never had to call them twice...they always get things done the first time. I can't say enough good things about USAA.

I've been with them for about 20 years.
They are little more expensive than some, but I have no complaints. That's worth a lot to me.

I have had USAA since 98 and have been very happy with there pricing between auto and renters insurance. There banking is also a plus you get all those ATM fees returned to your account at the end of the month.

The only drawback to USAA is the fact that it's hard to deposit cash, or money orders without a bunch of headache. I have a couple rentals; one tenant pays me in cash and the other pays me with a money order. Every month, it's PITA to figure out what to do....
