The best way to ignore these ashats is by not giving them the opportunity to send you a letter:

Buy and build firearms from 80% lowers, kits, Etc.

I live in LA County, not the city. I'm picking up next week. I'll keep an eye out in my mail for one. If one does arrive, I have a nice target to shoot at.

So, the Counties have ready access to the DROS records.

Who else does?

GF and I bought from Burbank and we both got letters during our 10-day wait. Made my blood boil. New car owners aren't targeted with letters about drunk driving. Home Depot doesn't send letters when you buy a hammer. These letters are intimidating BS and I want to know how we go about suing them.

Hmm... looks like I need to buy a handgun this weekend.

I want to get one of those letters in my hands.

So in my opinion, targeting new gun owners in LA for education is not that far out of line.

I get the gripe about registration and lists, but did anybody think that they aren't already on these lists (assuming you have bought guns since the late 80's).

If we are going to keep our rights nation wide, I hope the focus for reducing gun violence is focused where it matters, and LA qualifies. If I am missing some significant violation, fill me in.
To me what is significant is what this letter should mean to all those people who voted for background checks in the recent poll (nearly 50%) and defending it saying that background checks were not registration.

I think most of us realize that once the government has the information, they are storing and distributing it as they see fit, regardless of the law.

I like that idea. Seriously if 10 or more people did the same thing, it would be so awesome. It wouldn't change anything, but you know it would send a message. 1 person, not so much.

Don't let them fool you! They are well educated, computer savey, professional criminials. They have family members and friends that work in state, county, city offices. AND THEY TALK! That letter with the OP's address on it is the same as a big sign on his lawn saying "I have guns, come get them". If a mail box had been ripped off, and that letter was in it, who has that info now? I think it is totally reckless that Los Angeles sent out this type of info.

Here is the thing. Them sending a letter is difficult (for rational people) to take at face value as intimidating. It is just a letter educating the new gun owners that there are responsibilities and laws related to gun ownership. A letter with feces or bullet holes in it...now that (to rational thinking people) can easily be construed as intimidating.

Personally, I think it would be better if they sent that letter to every address in LA, not just new gun owners. The marketing effort is the root of what bothers people. The fact that the government dug up their name and address and sent them a letter represents the fact that they are no longer anonymous individuals floating through the masses. Yet we are the same people that actively participate on a public gun forum

I think if a kid goes missing law enforcement has a list of nearby registered sex offenders and can enter their properties to search for the kid. Are gun owners on the verge of losing the constitutional right to not have their premised entered without cause? Would a shooting in the area soon justify searches of homes of gun owners? Seems like this "we know who you are and where you live" letter is setting up for a next step.

I think this is quite possible.

I recall a story on the radio yesterday about a group of theives hitting houses where people suspended their subscriptions to the LA Times while they were out of town. They caught one of them with the suspend list on him.

Found an example article here: http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-cou...-times-readers

I read through this thread but didn't see if the OP said it was a handgun registration or just a DROS that they got this info?

The ones we got were from new handgun purchase at an FFL. GF and I each got one (we both bought the same model .22).

Based on timing, it's from a PPT of a pistol.

I think that's where this is headed. This letter was sent out in conjunction with the LAPD. Next time you get pulled over for speeding, expect a cavity search for being an evil gun owner, and an escalation of warrantless searches of your vehicle because you "may" be a menace.. and transporting a gun illegally.

I just called Anne Tremblay, the City prosecutor whose name and number is on the bottom of the letter. I left a message to call me back. However, she did leave her cell number on her message. If I don't hear from her, I call her cell.

Transparent to anyone and everyone w/in government - no matter what agency you are referring to.

Wait - are the rest of you really that naive to believe that you had your DROS completed and had a pistol "registered" and yet "they" DON'T know who and where you are? Really? Come on.

Of course we know they do. But using the info at the city level to mail letters is not what we signed up for.

Thank you BRoss for posting a link and an excerpt from same as some explanation:

Quote:
As part of this campaign, new gun buyers who resided in the two pilot areas, would receive a letter sent by the City Attorney's Office and signed by the City Attorney, Attorney General and Chief of Police that indicated that the gun purchase had been documented, and should that gun be used in a crime and it had not been legally transferred, that original purchaser could be prosecuted for that subsequent illegal transfer. The letter would arrive on Day 2 or 3 of the state mandated la-day waiting period.

I have no idea where these "pilot areas" are, but I live within 5 miles of LAX and am in Day 6 (of 11) of my waiting period for my latest firearm purchase.
Nothing in my mailbox yet, although the letter contains no new information.

I do, however, need to purchase the 2013 edition of "How To Own A Gun In California - And Stay Out Of Jail".

According to the 2010 article, "The working group identified two geographically distinct areas, LAPD’s Devonshire and the 77th Street policing districts, for inclusion in the letter program. The 77th Street area is 12 mi.2 with 175,000 residents, and Devonshire is nearly 54 mi.2, with a total population of 250,000. Both areas have large numbers of residents who are legally buying guns that are ultimately being recovered as crime guns in the possession of others."

I know after the 2010 article, the City of L.A. wanted to expand the program, but off the top of my head, I'm unsure of the current status of that expansion.
