Lock with PPT
I did a PPT this weekend and the store told me I needed to buy a lock from them even though I, the buyer, has a safe and the seller brought a lock. Is this normally the case with PPTs?
I thought that I could just sign a safe affidavit as I normally do with NEW firearms purchases. |

That question is not about PPT, it's about the lock requirement.

With a ppt I meet the seller in the parking lot and put a lock on the weapon as if its included with the sale/part of the package deal.
Has worked for me on the 2 times I've done that without an issue. |

I write the buyer a receipt for $1.00 and sign it. From what I understand the lock needs to be purchased within 30 days of the sale. Where or whom you buy it from is irrelevant.
Buying with the intention of returning it to Walmart? |

Yes. CA law says some kind of firearms safety device is required for every gun sold through an FFL.
For long guns, however, the Safe Affidavit works, if you care to use it. It's just handguns that the Feds have made into a problem in this issue.

I can't figure it out sometimes either, I usually to the Wal-Mart buy/return deal... But every store has a different policy it seems. I've had places that "forgot to let me know" and they tried to make me buy one in their store (didn't work) and I've had a store give me my gun in a brown paper bag...

The safe affidavit only covers DOJ requirments not ATF. If the Feds say they want a gunlock with the sale then you have to do it. We sell CA approved gunlocks for $5, we also buy back CA approved gunlocks for $5. Wink wink get it..... Leave the store with your gun and gunlock sell the gunlock back for $5 if you dont want it. However, nost people have never cared about bringing it back.
