contribute more and you might get your answers. Due to too many people being rude and forgetting to say "Thanks" I have stopped giving out directions like this in PMs...

Trying to post in this main thread since there are newer threads available.

As mentioned by other members, ever since the last cleanup, alot of areas have been designated off limits (closed to shooting). Was at Steele Peak earlier today, many folks now park their cars at the bottom and walk up to shoot.

Also beware of some areas where shooting is prohibited although its unmarked. My group was shooting earlier at the back portion of the trail and was visited by the Ranger. Very courteous and professional, informed us that this area is closed and asked us to move to another spot. Basically all spots facing in the direction of the Mayweather Gun Club is off limits even though theres no signs saying not to.

That's probably a good idea though, the last thing anyone wants is a "cold" range at the club taking impacts while people are out. I wouldn't be upset over that, especially if the rangers were courteous about telling me.

Does it get muddy even after a slight rain at Steele peak? I'm think about heading out there tomorrow morning but rain in the forecast for overnight hour. If it gets muddy does anyone suggest an SUV with 2wheel drive?

I answered your question in the other Steele Peak thread in the So Cal subforum, but I'll repost it here. I don't think we're supposed to get that much rain out of this system, so you'll probably be ok. Just take it easy and don't try to take any hills straight on if possible.

I just got a call from the BLM ranger I talk to and he wanted me to say he is sorry to inform us that all of western Riverside County and San Diego county is now under stage III fire restriction. On May 22 the wording
Quote:
3. Stage III – Recreational/Target shooting of any type is prohibited.
was added to the stage III restrictions. So long story short Steele Peak is closed to shooting till the fire restriction is over.

He was surprised it was this soon in the season but the recent fires must have had some influence. I asked him if he thought this was an excuse for a permanent closure and he said not at all, with the County Supervisors office in favor of keeping it open as soon as the weather cooperates it will be back open.

Below is a link to the PDF about the stage III restriction (see page 2) and the last few pages have maps showing the closed stage III areas in red.
http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medial...ns%20Order.pdf

I will post this on other Perris BLM/Steele Peak threads.

That really sucks! But understandable considering the last couple weeks of hot/low humidity winds drying everything out. Thanks for posting.

Has anyone experience taking a mini van to steele peak? I sold my SUV to accommodate the needs of growing family, and bought ourselves a sienna. Please please anyone out here tell me you have had experience with mini van.
I don't plan to go far in at all. I'm just concern about the dirt mount(hump) at the entrance.
Do you guys and gals think I can make it through the entrance?
Thank y'all

YES I have a Toyota Sienna and have no problems taking up the hill. The trick is when you first turn in off the road go all the way to the right and then slowly pick your way up the hill. The dirt is ALOT harder packed there and not as rutted up. I have taken my Van a long ways in all the way to the back where you make the sharp turn right. to go to the very back. To bad you will have to wait till next season and that is IF it opens again.

I would only go if it were raining the day of, cuz that's the only way I feel you would have a chance to argue about the fire hazard. Or if the place was a muddy mess....

BLM or USFS has never lifted fire restrictions, shooting or otherwise until the Santa Ana wind season is over (November years ago but December-January the last couple years) and when we have started the winter storm cycles and temps have cooled off.

I only go on weekdays but have herd it's ok on weekends. Not too packed and people are respectable. Another place that we need to pack out more than we shoot, getting semi trashy.

Just went recently because i live nearby. Was able to get a good shoot in the morning before the ranger arrived. He was courteous and advised us that the range Was closed during the fire season. No problems at all we packed up and left.

I believe those guys show up every once in a while but probably not all the time since i don't think they have the budget to always be checking.

.... Lucky you weren't fined. I've seen many this weekend just drive right pass the no shooting sign due to fire. Did see a few who stopped, saw the sign and left.

Since its posted "No Shooting" now, if a fire starts while you are there don't cry if the state comes down on you like a ton of bricks. Fire fighting gets expensive in case you don't know. Just saying.......

Default Fire Danger Closure.

Just passed by cause we were out riding motorcycles and saw this. I personally would not press my luck, ie fires are very costly to fight.

I really wish the Ranger would just come to the opening and start handing out tickets!!!!!!!!!!!! Then you knuckle heads would be here crying that the Crusty Old Ranger Man gave you a Few Hundred Dollar ticket and how the system is against Gun Owners!!!!!!! Me myself I stay away and check every now and then the BLM website to see if the fire ban has been lifted. Its guys like you all that dont pay attention to the signs that are going to get the place shut down for good
