Yah, that's all we need is more fuel for our anti-gun law makers.

Default Anyone know if Steele Peak is open or closed to shooting right now?

We were hoping to hit SP this weekend to sight in some rifles. Saturday my buddy was out near SP wheeling in his truck and he saw a sign that said closed to shooting due to fire conditions. I was wondering if anyone has been to SP in the last week or so or if anyone knows for sure if it will be open this weekend.

Thanks!

We may have to increase our carbon footprint before we can pollute with lead and copper......

I have been shooting at SP for years and found it on accident after Rock Pile got shut down. If you think that place is a secret, let alone not talked about here on CG, you are out of your mind. That place is a fricking zoo and unless you get there at 7am or camp the night before, you are pretty much standing shoulder to shoulder (in the back area, not just in the front area) to shoot.

It was closed last fire season and it opened up after the first couple of rains, so your theory of it shutting down permanently hasn't been the case thus far.

If we don't share our shooting spots and introduce new shooters to the hobby, we will be a dying breed in the next few decades...

They should have sold that piece of land to a private buyer. At least we wont have to deal with having the place closed or have it closed permanently due to a bunch of *****heads who don't know how to clean up after themselves.

I've never been to the place since I don't have the kind of transportation to go through that kind of terrain.

Since I haven't seen how bad it gets, do people have any photos to show?
Is there a lot of stuff that can be scraped or recycled? If so, I may be able to bring my dad's dump truck.

In reply to this ^...not really. Anything of value through recycling or scrap is automatically picked over by the meth heads that frequent the area looking for easy money. The only thing left out there is plain old garbage.

Right, because it matters to them whether we are nice average Joes or are all Adam Lanza's. Nope, were all school shooters just waiting to snap in the eyes of those libtards.

Because its closed due to fire restrictions, i was last up there about 2 weeks ago and saw a few law breakers shooting. We should set up a clean up. Since its closed, now would be the best time.... Yay or Nay?

Ive tried to organize a clean up since last month, I had blm support....they were donating a 40 yard roll off. I had only one volunteer signed up, I'm trying to set a new date up but my job has me working weekends...so kinda tough for me. If someone wants to take the reins and lead a group clean up I'm happy to set things up with blm.

Would be nice for it to cool down at least a little bit before we schedule a clean up. Did they already order the roll off?

SP and most BLM lands have been closed for fire season for the 3rd year in a row. Typically closes in June and last year it didn't open it back up until January.

Hopefully, with all the rains we've had in the last few weeks the BLM will open it sooner this year!

I was a Firefighter with the USFS and back then the rule of thumb was that fire season would end after 2" of rain. I think they will keep the closure in place until at least after the Santa Ana winds hit usually Oct.-Nov. But I hope you are right and I am wrong.

As of 10/22/2015, still closed for fire season. Just cruised by to have a look this morning.

Was really wanting to go, too. Damn.

You'd think there would be more places to shoot in a rural semi/rural area like a lot of the IE.........

Was hoping to go for Veteran's day with my brothers but I guess it's still closed. If there is a cleanup effort being organized I'd love to help out. I live just a few miles away and wouldn't mind giving up half a Saturday to clean up. I've never gone here but I figure if I help to clean up first I'd know where exactly it is for when it opens and I get to come back again later.

I hoping my schedule will open up soon so I can set it up with BLM, my weekends are kinda tied up right now. But If someone want to run it I can set up the 40yard bin and blm support. Welcome back to CG George

pruer00r:

I'd run with it, but I wouldn't want to organize one until the BLM opens it back up. I strongly feel that we'll get much higher participation if the cleaners get to shoot afterwards!

With all the rains lately I am sure they will open it soon, perhaps a call to BLM office is needed?

It needs to be organized at least 2 months in advance to get all the details lined up. Maybe even for the day it opens if possible. If we wait till it opens to organize it, it'll be another month or 2 before it actually happens....

One place I don't have any connections with is BLM. I met Art a few times, but I heard he retired.

Why don't you call your BLM connection and see if we can arrange something with them for the day it does open, or shortly thereafter? Maybe do it before it opens and start with a completely clean area? A special clean and Cal Guns only shoot day like a few years ago when you and I met?

Yes, Art did retire. I just need to email blm and its pretty much good to go, but my schedule is all over the place so I can't set a date.... Someone needs to take the lead and organize a volunteer list along with a potluck list. If whatever day is set, and I'm available to show I'll be there, but I can't say forsure. I'll help set it up, but I need a front man to be there to run it day of. I'm sure that at least 2-3 are needed as a lead team.

Some friends of mine went plinking over in Nuevo over the weekend, just a few miles east of Perris, area behind lake Perris . Blm land. Other shooters there also. Friend of mine knows a sheriff in his Cub Scout stuff and he gave us the heads up. I will get some location details, but they had no issues there.
