While the state ap always included a caliber specification, the issuing agency makes the ultimate decision on the firearm. I know that San Benito County required that the pistol not be single shot exempt, but I do not recall any additional constraints. Of course the Sheriff can always decide to deny the request.

It was news to me when the requirements from the other county were brought up earlier. I had no idea.

What most sucks about this awesome new on-roster handgun is that I decided to go fixed mag on my AR pistol (with a DFM) instead of registering as AW, in case I wanted to sell it later.

Now Franklin Arms comes along with this kick-*** piece of gear and ruins the value of my current pistol. It's even worse because now I probably have to buy one of these because, well you know, because.

Thanks Franklin...I'm pretty sure my wife hates you guys.

Yup, the wife is like “Who’s this Franklin place, and why are you giving them all our money?”.

I was THIS CLOSE to putting in a preorder for one yesterday, but I would have been irresponsible and putting it on a credit card. I'd then have to make a thread here and ask if I had made a mistake

So just to be clear is the idea that you would install a mag lock, then drill the barrel, install a functioning gas block and gas tube ? Or simply install a mag lock and swap out the upper ? Hypothetically of course

This is very exciting. A means to legally get a pistol-marked lower in CA is a pretty significant development!

Thanks Franklin Armory for doing it again... it wouldn't shock me CA will close this avenue in 2019 with Gavin leading the charge.

Well I put my order in. Im going to get a 22LR conversion bolt instead of an upper. No gas tube needed and it already has a "22" barrel. I get to keep my mag release as a 22 right?

1) What is the final ruling from Calgunners on swapping the upper for semi-auto? Yes or no? Will it need a modified mag release, fixed mag, etc? Or can we just swap the upper?

2) Franklin, if you make one of these in 9mm, please make it compatible with glock mags, throw a 9 inch barrel on it, and call it the CA9.

not sure. can't find info on if a gas block is there or not. and no good enough photos exist to check.

if the barrel is indeed not drilled for gas hole, then swapping uppers is the easiest, then followed by swapping barrels, then lastly sending out barrel to be drilled.

my path will most likely be new upper. i don't want to mess with the stock upper, taking it apart to swap barrels.

and of course i would install a maglocking device before doing any mods.

yes, you must maglock this before changing it to semi-auto. if you don't, you run afoul of current AW laws.

I think you'd still have to maglock it if it's semiauto 22LR... the "magazine outside the grip" triggers assault pistol laws. There is no exemption for rimfire else we'd all just run 22LR uppers on our assault pistols...

Excuse my ignorance, but I thought rimfire was exempt from AW laws?

Only for rifles.

No rimfire exemption for pistols.

Norcal Gun Vault near Sacramento says they ordered some. No idea if that's local to you or not, but it meets your criteria of "any" dealer.

Sorry, but the orders piled up quick. Unless orders piled up further today, we should be able to ship before Christmas. Our sales manager is very cautious, and my response is an estimate.

We're offering a conversion service for the CA7. Cheaper than a new upper, configurable depending upon your needs, and fast turn around. Did I mention the first 3 are free? Use coupon code "FACA7" when checking out. If the coupon code doesn't deduct shipping we will manually refund it.

I love the creativity here.. reminds me of the original off-list lower days of 2005. And many FFLs similarly stayed far away from OLL... until they saw how..many..were..being..sold and $$. Then everyone piled on.

I'm sure this will be a similarly successful endeavor. At least until Gavin's people get wind of it next year and propose some changes. So enjoy while it lasts! If I hadn't just registered an 80% BBAW pistol, I would be buying one too.

Iím aware itís not hard to build an upper (or purchase one) my question was about the legality of swapping the upper.
