Why not due both? They are not mutually exclusive. Point only for CA is pretty cheap.

Is it going to be hard to get a tag? It's my first time going hunting and I'll have a mentor. Was gonna put in for one this weekend.

Depends on the Zone. A zone Is easy to get, but you have to compete with everyone else that uses the scope to spot deer No thanks.

Lucky for me I have private land to hunt on.

Gents,

A number of factors, I got X9B last year. Was not able to go. Guides are extremely expensive. I was elated by the X9B tag but guides were $1750-$2000 for 2 days. I have a daughter in college, so that was out.
D11 just above me has very low odds of getting a buck, and the country is extremely rugged. I have 4 preference points for pronghorn in Wyoming, 3 for deer. So I put in for the doe/fawn cheapo tags, deer/pronghorn. And I put in for Nevada deer tags. We will see. If not I might blow my wad and go do a Texas doe hunt. A2 But predator hunting for sure.

You drew X9b but didn’t hunt!? You don’t NEED a guide to just get out there and hunt... especially a premium unit.

There’s a saying “the grass is greener on the other side” that might be a state line, but how are you going to know how green the grass is here if you don’t hunt a premium unit?

AZ draw deadline is June 11th for anyone considering. If you look up the draw odds there's a good chance you can get a tag here.

Uh, what?? You wasted points for a premium tag and didn't go?? You do not need a guide, just maps/onX and boots on the ground.

Get your point & then go out of state.

If you MUST kill something to enjoy the hunt, take up guided pig hunts or, as you say, go out of state.

But it's called hunting, not shooting, for a reason. Without the risk of coming back empty-handed, it isn't really hunting.

Cheap, good and easy don’t usually come together in hunting. Especially in CA. Your best bet might be giving up hunting all together.

While I still buy a yearly hunting license to support conservation I decided long ago that it was the meat I liked vs. the actual going out and hunting/cleaning part. Now I just get my various game meats at various restaurants in the area.

Ah,

The ever so supportive folks at CG. Yes I wanted to make the most ofX9B Hunt, but couldn’t afford it. I see are you negative clowns like this with your respective families? And to the fellow who got the deer in D11 on your first time out. Congrats that is quite an accomplishment. A2

Not the state’s or anyone else’s fault if you drew a tag and came home empty handed because you chose not to hunt it.

That said I wish there was a mechanism for surrendering a tag and getting your points back like other states have.

Good luck with out of state does and fawns.

If you only put in for doe/fawn tag in Wyoming, you won't get a point there.

If you do it two years in a row, you'll lose your points.

If we are to be completely honest.....there is no such thing as premium deer zones in CA. In my opinion, it’s just a made up term by F&W.

Drew x9b couple decades ago. Didn't need a guide. Through some crap in the back of the pickup and headed out for about a week. Didn't get a monster but brought home some meat. Hunted in a tee shirt and jeans. Ate dintymoore, cheetos and beer.

It is what you make it. Don't know your circumstances though.

Preference point and D3-5 for the last 10 years for me.

You have local deer to hunt so you can lean about deer but you won't go. Learn dear first then hunt out of state.

And not hunting that tag you're crazy. If things get crazy you can changed before the season opens on that tag

Cali has great hunting lots of land and game just have to do YOUR homework.

Let's not get stuck on semantics.

We have zones that have many times less permitted hunters. Does that work?

Mind me asking where in WYO are you applying for ? My friends and son in law and I have put in for doe/fawn antelope unit 20 next to Kaycee, 68 miles north of Casper. With the changes made two years ago it is really necessary to get into the FIRST draw! Wyo is getting very popular and licenses are tighter for non residents than before. I put Caw lee fuorn yuh hunting behind years ago.

Doe/fawn tags are 49 bucks and have much higher draw odds, no points involved just random draw. Full price either sex tags are 350 bucks and almost impossible to draw without several points.

While I like shooting big animals for cool pictures and an occasional trophy, I'm all about eating wild meat every day, and would rather have a couple of doe/fawn tags every year or two than a single "any antelope" tag every 4 or 5 years.

...but, you can put in for both, get points, and hunt doe/fawn while building points for the every once in a while big hunt.
