I wish I would have done my own. Instead I took it to a gunsmith who charged more than his quote. Then I took the knob off and his work looked like s**t. Then when I questioned his work he acted like he did me a favor and dropped my bolt on the counter which put a sscratch on the bolt finish. At that moment I almost told him to take that bolt and shove it up his a**. But I didn't have enough money to buy a new bolt. So now I inform people to not take it to him. This jerk works @ The Gun Shop on sierra highway in lancaster. Rant over.
Sorry for the thread crapping. |

Nice! I like it.
Simple but clean DIY. |

Now grab some epoxy & spread it around the seam between the knob & handle like you would run a bead of caulking to blend it all together. If need be, you can sand it later to get it even smoother. Then carefully tape off the bolt body from the handle & spray it with Duracoat or your favorite finish.

Gun kote if anything...
If you have the cash get your rifle redone with Cerakote. About $120 to $230 depending on shop. |

Hit it with a rattle can. If it doesn't work out, you can easily strip it & try something else. I did my entire barreled action in my bolt gun with a Krylon can. So far it's holding up OK & touchups are easy. The next finish I try will be one of Brownells baked finishes.

My only issue with this method is that there is a void in many bolt handle castings.
When you get rid of most of the knob, the void can be a significant cross-section of the remaining casting where you cut the threads. You will know if this was true if the bolt handle breaks off at the threads. What I do is completely cut off the knob, drill a hole in the handle, turn a setscrew into a post on one end, press the post into the handle and then tig weld around the junction.

Well.... We weren't ready to roll that out yet, but now that the cat is out of the bag, it is a new super-brake/compensator designed for the "I need some custom gunwork but I don't want to spend much" crowd. Actually, it is the "before" picture of a Noveske 14.5 barrel that a customer (now) took to a local machine shop to cut out the pin. They got the pin, and a lot more. |
