Air pistol wanted- need advice
I'm going to be down for a couple of weeks to a month from shoulder surgery and want to take advantage of the downtime to kill off some of the gophers and ground squirrels on my property plus practice shooting from my weak side. I'm looking for suggestions for a pellet gun- my right arm will be immobilized and will be weak but I'll be be able to manipulate a bolt or other control. I don't think I'll have enough strength to break a barrel or pump a piston.
My budget is $150; any help, suggestions, links, reviews, etc. are appreciated! |

I have and love the 1911 full metal gas blowback here. http://www.evike.com/shop/21/45/241/

had one of these when i was young and its impressive. you might be able to pump it one handed. i was actually thinking about getting another one just the other week. and if i remember i think you can shoot pellets. Last edited by sMp; 02-26-2017 at 6:29 PM.. Reason: forgot link |

You cant go wrong with a Crosman 2240. if you have the time to wait, order from the Crosman custom shop. Engraved with whatever you want, any length barrel, short or long steel breech, and adjustable trigger, etc

Ground squirrels are tough. I have missed head shots with 22 short and 22LR CB caps and the squirrel goes away to die or recover.
I have shot tree squirrels in the body with an upgraded Sheridan 5mm - 700+ fps and tree squirrels jump and run away Some fall and are shot again but unless it is a brain shot, pellet guns don't offer a clean kill.

Being as you'll be hurting a 2240 is a good option. Accurate powerful and heck a fun. If you don't kill anything it's great shooting practice. Don't forget Crosman Web site has 20% off on tuesdays...code 20offtuesday someone had that pistol with free co2 and Pellets. Think it was pyramidair.com while I don't usually care for gamo Pellets watch Keith Warren pig hunting with a 22cal rifle. I think a pellet gun is capable not saying a pistol is ideal but you would have fun with it shooting can...I like shooting necco candies. Great practice you can even buy the shoulder stock and turn it into a carbine...that would still be under $100

These brazen little furry roaches get within 15 feet of me and I have stabbed gophers with an arrow. Sit still next to an active burrow long enough and a gopher will eventually get curious and stick his head out.
I picked up a Crosman 2240 and ordered a carton of CO2 cartridges off of Amazon. Thanks for all the great advice, especially regarding the unlikeliness of killshots on ground squirrels with a CO2 pistol. I'll put that on the back burner and consider a shot only if I've got a fresh cartridge and close range. |

I've shot 2 pocket gophers in the last 2 weeks. I go out and patrol the back and front yard late in the afternoon or whenever I have some free time. CCI quiets work pretty good. I used my daughters savage rascal. I picked up a gamo shadow from a friend for 50$ It shoots a 177 pellet 1000 fps. Op it would be tough to cock the rifle with one hand. Having any luck with the co2 pistol?

I like these. Current model looks different than the two I have but probably the same, and good reviews. Very accurate, decent power for CO2. No pumping.

I was off work for two weeks and ended up lounging around the yard in a folding chair, setting up near gopher activity. I killed 8 gophers and three squirrels on the first day I spent outside. No wounded. All deads.
Total kills for the two weeks were 17 gophers and 5 squirrels. I thought I missed one until l peeked into his burrow and saw him dead with a hole in his head. All clean kills and none were more than 20 feet away. All shots were weak hand, no rest. |
