You do realize the rec tec uses 304 stainless steel for better heat conduction so you dont have the issues that traeger guys have of heat variances?and the 6 year warranty over the 3 the latter offers.my 700 has at least 100 pounds on the traeger 34,not to mention the hopper is 40 pounds so no need to check that slab of beef when you do overnight cooks.oh and the built in indoor light as well is another upgrade.until youve been around a rectec or owned one,its a different world compared to that traeger crap.

"2 Year Warranty • Covers all components" The other thing that turns me off I found reading reviews of them, is the fact that they are extremely light weight. The RT-590 that is the size I would get is only 123 pounds. The Camp Chef Woodwind Classic with no side burner is 148 pounds and overall dimensions are slightly less. Still, Rec Tec has an excellent reputation and is stainless steel where it counts. But, as most folks don't know, stainless steel is an extremely soft metal that dents very easily. We overlook a golf course in the hills south of LV and it gets very windy so weight is a factor. I have a Weber Summit and even it moves slightly at times. Other problem with Rec Tec is the fact that the RT-590 isn't available til after 10/1. Still looking. Thanks for all the comments, as I really appreciate them.

12v Smokers rule!
My 12v Gmg Davy Crockett is awesome.
Smoking meat from my trucks cigarette lighter is pretty cool haha. . Avoided pellet grills for a long time thought I'd give the little grill a shot . Liked it so much I just got a jim bowie. Waited till I found a crazy good deal of course. |

I have had a Traeger Select for some 5 years now and it works great for me.
The temp swings more in warmer temps than cooler -- +/- 15-20 at the most in warmer temps. But it cooks meat and veges well and I am very happy with mine. |

Pretty sure Rec Tec started out with longer warranties but people abused it. |

FWIW, my neighbor has the Traeger Texas size, and it is still going strong after many years. We have done a lot of briskets on that rig. The Camp Chef is a lot easier to clean out though.

Had a Traeger bought from Costco after 14 months returned it cause of the crazy temp swings, got cash back and bought a Yoder made in the USA and built like a tank. Pricey but it will last forever

I've had a Traeger for about 8yrs or so. Bought from Costco. It was one of the units that had a recall due to peeling powder coat. I never sent it for the new barrel cuz I was lazy and didn't want to disassemble and reassemble the thing. So the powder coat peeled off in lots of places and I had to replace a hot rod or 2 but it cooked amazing every time. I even added the front shelf and the cold smoker attachment. It's ugly but it works.
With all that said, I'm going to sell it soon as I just upgraded to a Blaz'n Grid Iron. I wanted something bigger and made in the USA. www.Blazngrillworks.com

Thanks for the info. If I hit the jackpot at one of the casino's I'll be sure to get it. I figure with shipping and extras it will run $1800-$2000 and this is for a smaller one.

I got one on the cheaper end. Picked up a pit boss from Lowes and the few times I have used it turned out well. Have been using electric masterbuilt prior but started having trouble getting it to smoke at low temps. I think it was in the $300 range on sale with military discount on top of that.

I decided to go with the Camp Chef Classic. There's a promotion going on for the Classic with the side burner which I don't want as it will be sitting next to my Weber Summit on my patio. The promotion includes free shipping, a full cover and a bag of pellets. I don't think it was available unless you bought the Classic with the burner at $899. A couple of days after I was looking at the web site where I added a few things to my cart, I received an email from them telling me that the promotion also applies to the side burnerless Classic at $699. So I decided on this one at $699 delivered. We'll see.
Thanks again for all your comments as I've read them all and looked at all the options that you mentioned. For my cooking style, using my Summit an average of 6 days a week (1-2 breakfasts, 0-1 lunches, 3-5 dinners), this seemed the way to go for me. Also, I seldom cook for anyone except Calamity, and when I do, it's only for 2 others, so a larger one will be a waste for me. Also, I have a perfect corner for this, forming an U with my Summit and a storage cabinet that I keep a spare propane tank, my cast iron cookware, griddles, etc.. It will now be named my "Chef's Corner". Below is my Summit in Florida, now on my patio in Henderson. Starting our meal of chicken parmy.

Good choice on the Woodwind. Nice smoker for the money. Don’t sweat temp swings unless you see it in the meat probe. Good air circulation is important to avoid rancid, stale smoke. That is naturally going to produce swings on the in-air probe.
My in-meat probes never swing down, not even by a single degree - they only steadily rise. And that is the only temp that matters to me. Last edited by SkyHawk; 08-18-2018 at 12:54 PM.. |

Thanks again, to you and everyone else who posted. No post was wasted as they were all informative. PS: Picked up a couple more bags of CC pellets at Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday when we went to Costco. They are right next door. Place had a lot of smokers of several brands including Camp Chef and Traeger. Not a Woodwind though.
