Default Sigh... last minute change of plans for birthday camping trip...

One of my favorite organized RV sites is WhiteHorse Lake in AZ. There's a few spots where, if you line your rig up right, you can't see hardly anybody, and the lake is visible through the trees... just you and the squirrels.

and, this weekend, also there will be 60mph winds and half-dollar-sized hailstones with frequent thunderstorms throughout the weekend.

Ah well... Castaic Lagoon is nice for a last minute backup.

Fortune favored the bold, it seems.

We drove through some pretty nasty hail to get to the campsite (hail in august? WTF?), but the truly bad weather skirted our mountain the whole weekend. We heard the thunder over Williams, got some significant rain at night, but no 60mph winds, and nothing bad in camp.

Saturday night had perfectly clear skies, giving us some amazing star-gazing, with a good number of really bright meteor sightings.

Sometimes, life is really good.

There were several people camping in tents through the night-time-rain... braver than I...

We had all kind of highfalutin hiking plans when we left home, but they didn't survive... so I can't speak to the falls.

White Horse Lake was REALLY low, though. Last september the lake was surrounded by a grassy marsh. This weekend, you could walk between the lake and the grass

That's too bad, glad you made it out there though! looked like a well kept camp site. How packed was it?

almost empty. Our "loop"only had 3 or 4 other campers in it and about 15 or 20 empty spots.

Apparently AZ was debating closing the Nat. Forests due to drought and fire danger in the weeks leading up to our trip. Between that and the hail warnings, I suspect a few people were scared away.

Slept a lot, watched the lake, drank too much.

The squirrels made it through unharmed this time. :-)
