Default General scope ring spec question

Hey all,

I'm currently in school and taking a CNC class this quarter. We have a little final project that is pretty open ended, so I thought that would try to make a one piece scope mount for the 1-4x I'm going to buy for three gun.

I was just curious on the inner diameter of the rings. Does anyone knows if they are exact diameter of the scope tube, or do they undersize them about .001" or so to make sure it clamps on securely?

Thanks,

Jon

I would measure mine for you, but they all have scopes mounted up and not really interested in removing them.

If I venture to take a guess... I think it will vary based on the design of the rings.

If you have ever used rings from various manufactures you will notice they sometimes do things differently.

Larue has a different vertical split design than some of the others. TPS rings come together and install differently than my Seekins rings. Even looking at the Leupold PRW rings interface with the scope tube in a completely different way.

Aaadmount included some engineering pictures which I think you might find interesting... taken from their website.

Looks like running some stress calcs would help to see if your design will work... last thing you would want to do is cause damage to the scope.

I believe that 0.001" would exceed the manufacturing tolerances of most inexpensive mounts. Also, the scope is held in place, in general, by the tension of the rings based on the torque applied to the screws. The range of torque acceptable to mount scopes varies. It's generally in the ballpark of 2.5 newton-meters.
