Ya man. I think its only a matter of time before somebody gets injured there on a weekend. But its also crowded on weekdays. Theres tons of retirees in the area now and contrary to public opinion, old people can and often do still act stupidly with guns. And theres lots of welfare leeches, unemployed bums, spoiled college kids...etc who also aren't at work on weekdays. So even weekday shooting is no guarantee of privacy.

Plus I got a membership at Wrens Ranch which is NICE. So I dont really see a point to nasty, overcrowded BLM ****holes anymore. I like the idea of shooting with fellow calgunners but if its at an indoor range (never been a fan of indoor ranges) or a BLM spot, Ill pass.

Maybe if I want to shoot steel targets Steel Peak would be ok but thats no fun without at least 1 friend to compete with (and I usually shoot alone) so my nice members only shooting range is much better IMO.

Default Steele Peak got closed today

Because some dude decided it was ok to fire off a full auto rifle he made and the sheriff's closed it real quick and sent everybody home. All it takes is some idiots out there and we are going to lose another place to shoot.

The Deputy said it would back open tomorrow.

I heard it was because of that lady who set up a taco booth and was busted for selling margaritas and tequila shots without a liquor license?

Not sure if he was there when it occurred, but, When we rolled up, there was a caravan leaving and that's what i was told about whom did what. There were 2 sheriffs cars with lights flashing and all, looking pretty serious at the entrance. Said to come back tomorrow, closed for the rest of the day.

Does the Riverside county sheriff have the authority to close federal land?

Why anyone would fire a homemade FA gun without the homemade can attached to it is beyond me.

county sheriff has authority to enforce county laws IF the fed has so authorized.

and they have, as the feds allow the state to administer BLM lands in CA.

I did not know that , thank you I have learned some thing new today. I guess the BLM is just wasting tax payer dollars for those Chevrolet tahoes and the rangers that ride in them.

Sheriff doesn't care about enforcing BLM rules or doing BLM's job, so the BLM needs rangers. But sheriff can enforce state and local laws on BLM land.

I guess that means Tahoes for everybody! except you and me. ...

It was Wednesday 3-25-15 at about 11:30 am. They were towards the back near those spray painted rocks across from that truck high on top of the hill.

Is that right at the top of the 1st hill? In that semi-flat area where everyone shoots?

No, farther back. If you've been there you will know what i'm talking about the truck that's always parked really high on a hill to the left. It now has orange fencing around it, and they built a shed. It's really odd. I don't know what's going on up there.
Does any one know if these rattlers are good/suitable for eating?
Do you need a hunting license to take them?

go to the Gun Owners Orientation Geographic Location Extension, enter "steele peak directions" and it

draws

you

a

frikkin

map

with directions, alternate routes, etc.

which leads me to ask, how did you find your way to your computer? can you find your guns? will you ever see your car keys again?

hey in OP's defense I didnt think Steele Peak would be that easy to find before my first visit either. I assumed the BLM would try to hide it somehow and had no idea it was so easy to find.

You need a fishing license to take rattlesnakes and yes they are very good eating.
Cut the head off first then cut up the center of the belly to the anal vent. Grab the skin at the point you cut the head off in one hand and the snake in the other hand and peel the skin off up to the anal vent. The skin is only attached to the snake on the belly. They peel really easy. STOP at the anal vent or you'll tear the skin off at the coon tail. Don't ask me how I know. Carefully cut from the anal vent to the base of the rattle then with the skin in one hand carefully skin away with the knife and separate the skin from the tail up to the base of the rattle. Cut thru the snake at the base of the rattle to separate the skin from the snake.
I lay the snake out cavity down and fillet the meat off from the top of the backbone down on both sides. Kind of like filleting a fish. If you peel the innards out the thing will quit moving. Kinda weird but if the heart is still beating and you lay it down cavity up it'll right itself, cavity down, even without a head or skin. If you're quick gutting it you can hold that still beating heart in your hand. Kinda cool.

I cut the meat into chunks, rinse it off with water and soak it overnight in lightly salted water. The place most people go wrong cooking rattlesnakes is that they don't tenderize it. They're all muscle. Like alligator, they're tough as leather. You gotta beat that meat. I lay a layer of Saran wrap on the cutting board, arrange the chunks on the wrap then fold the wrap back over the meat and beat the hell out of it with a meat tenderizing mallet.
Then take some flour in a bowl, mix in some salt, pepper and some cayenne pepper and then dredge the chunks in the flour and sauté them in olive oil in a deep skillet. I've never had had anyone that tasted my rattlesnake not like it. Women, kids everyone loved it. Order it in a restaurant and you'll probably be disappointed cause you'll sit there chewing on it for 5 minutes. They don't know how to prepare it properly. I learned this from my Cajun friends in Louisiana. That's how they prepare gator.
I'd love to know where you saw those snakes at Steel Peak cause if you saw that many in one area there's probably a den nearby and we love killing and eating rattlers. Problem is one snake doesn't yield a lot of meat.

Wife and I, against better judgment went to Steele Peak today on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised. Had a good experience. Not crowded, everyone in our immediate area was safe and sane and other then the wind it was all good. Saw some knuckleheads shooting to the North into the posted no shooting area but after about an hour they must have read the no shooting sign they were parked next to and moved over and started shooting to the South towards the peak like everyone else.
Some A-hole in a white Cadillac Escalade went flying by about 40 MPH but luckily the wind blew the dust away from all the shooters. Probably some dumb ***** kid driving his dads Escalade cause nobody in their right mind would drive their own rig like that. Tested some reloads and shot a new AR. Good trip.

I did one in a chile bean stew about 30 years ago, pretty good stuff!

Default STEELE PEAK SHOOTING AREA

I nominate llazyjs to go and find the rattlesnake den and exterminate them. I mean...hunt them. I really hate rattlesnakes and occasionally shoot at steele peak. If someone wants to go eat those buggers so I don't have to be so worried about stepping on one Id appreciate it.

Ha I saw that escalade. I drove around looking for rattlesnakes, didn't see any. place was kinda busy.

no brass on the ground either, I was probably too early for that.

We left at 1PM and some guys were hitting spots for brass. Some automatic gunfire. Not good for gunowners. Always wary when shooting there...totally scared of dummies, but Saturday seemed ok. Didn't see the normal circus at the front. Watching a jeep with 3 guys hanging from the sides was pretty interesting. Didn't see a rattlesnake.
