Outside of Pahrump is a nice dry lake bed

Near Portland there is a great place to practice.

Oranco. And Hart Park in Santa Ana has a nice public range for free. Been there for over 40 years. I remember when Oranco's range was in Orange, up East Chapman. My father would take me crappie fishing in the little lake. It's dried up and gone now.

Hart Park is Actually the Santiago Park Range.
when you enter on the Santiago side, you can drive up to the range.
It's also accessible from Hart park, but it's a bit of a walk along the trail.
Nice Range, been there quite a bit by myself and with the kids.

In Los Angeles there is:
LA Valley College, Woodley Park in the Sepulveda Basin, Rancho Park,
You could probably rent any of the private ranges at Angeles bring your own hay bale and shoot all day.

Oakland has a free outdoor archery range up off of Skyline Blvd. in Roberts Park next to the Chabot Space and Science Center, beautiful place too, surrounded by redwood trees. Martinez had an archery shop in old town that had an indoor archery range with 8-10 lanes, but I haven't been there in 10+ years so I'm not sure it's still open.
