Happy to help any weekend or, with a bit of warning, any weekday.
It wasn't too bad when I was there 9-24, but there was a significant number of shotgun husks. The person we pulled in next to was getting ready to leave and had picked up, and piled up a lot of the wood and cardboard though. We bagged out a couple too.

Could someone please PM me the coordinates? I live in Oceanside and went shooting last week at Dulzura which is down about 20 miles east of Chula Vista so Im wondering if Steele Peak would be closer to me.
If any of you ever get a chance to shoot at Dulzura called "Pink Gate" check it out. It burned two weeks ago because some knuckleheads were shooting rocks and caught it on fire. They are facing a huge bill having to pay for CALFIRE tankers and Fire crews. Hate to be them. There's another shooting spot just past South Bay Gun Club thatis really nice too. We spent a good hour after shooting cleaning up other peoples messes. Really ticks me off people cant clean up after themselves and follow the rules. The Ranger out there J Funk is a really great guy as long as you're responsible. |

We're fairly new to BLM shooting but we're planning on heading out to Steele Peak tomorrow. Our first experience was at Berdoo canyon and we felt very safe there, the other shooters seemed safe and respectful, no cracks or zings over our heads (or worse). If only they'd all picked up their trash on the way out
Anyway, does anyone have any advice about Steele Peak? Is it generally safe or are there areas to avoid? From what we've seen people tend to setup by their vehicles, but we read that you have to be 100yds from the road, or does the fact its an unpaved dirt road mean it's ok? I'm sure many of you have encountered Ranger's up there so have experience of what they like vs don't. Appreciative of any help\advice you guys can offer, maybe we'll see some of you there? |

Well, we managed to get there late in the afternoon, wow, what a busy place and much cleaner than we were expecting - but still littered with shotgun shells and discarded targets. Needless to say all our brass and targets got picked up and packed out.
On the drive out one young man turned away from his shooting to watch us drive by - while unwittingly pointing his pistol at us as he removed the magazine..... Hmmm..... Is it really that difficult? I don't consider myself to be a "safe direction" !! |

Was out there today. Place is a mess. My cousin and I picked up some trash, but that place needs help. I remember going shooting as a kid, and we picked up what we brought and more. Still is the case, but people are pigs.

The general practice on the site is that we don't post directions or location either by street name or GPS coordinates. Since you are both newer members, we'd appreciate if you would go along with that. Thank you. Also, Calguns is a well known gun/2nd Amend. forum, so it is not far fetched to think that some people do come here just to learn shooting site locations. Some of those might also be the ones to leave their trash, so why make it easier for them. It happened at one of the Zombie shoots for example.
Also, as far as the First Amendment goes, there is no First Amendment right on this forum. This is a privately owned formed and the rules are made by the owner and enforced by the staff. You might want to read the First Amendment to ascertain who it is directed to specifically. |

Thank you Mr. retired. I went up there this morning, the place is a mess. All kind of trash, targets, shotgun cases everywhere, etc..... KingOf6, Ramdrodjan55 and myself loaded our trucks to the max with trash trying to clean up our shooting stations, there is so much trash up there than our efforts were literally imperceptible ..... *sigh* Another good place to shoot in peril to be shut down due to the irresponsible actions of some shooters.

I have been out there several times this past year and the only time I ever seen the ranger there was at a clean up that was held in April. He made sure the area was cold. As I posted in another thread I seen a large group of people shooting a fridge and they didn't take it with them But what is some one supposed to do ? Cell phone service is dead there no way to call authorities and if you approach a group leaving trash your asking for problems. I posted question about losing your firearm rights for fist fighting on a separate thread and the responses were walk away from confrontation . What can one do ? Write down the license plate of the vehicles there ? Then it becomes a he said she said .

I might suggest you contact the ranger station there and ask them what they suggest and if you did provide them video showing a dumping violation, would the video be sufficient without the need for you to testify. If leaving trash is only an infraction, then it would more than likely be something they would have to witness to issue a cite. If it is a misdemeanor not committed in their presence, then you might have to become more involved than you want. Again, ask their advice since it falls within their purview. I agree approaching anyone about their trash, could end with negative results for you, so I would not advise doing so. |

Anyone who posts GPS stuff so the general public can go trash an area should get a Perma-ban.
Sorry, but if you want to be an idiot you should be treated as one. Everyone works hard to keep these places clean. If you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem. There is NO first amendment rights on a privately owned forum.

Steele Peak has enough litter-pigs using that spot. It is my goal to get more good folks out there to help with the clean-up and further the sport.
Keeping it a secret won't help, it will only keep your fellow members out. It seem some folks would rather shoot is that mess than give up the location to Calgun members. I will fix this. |

I was out there last Sunday. Quite a bit of shooters.
If people learned to clean up a little more than what we put out, then the place would be tidy in no time. Just my 2 cents.

Teach your friends!
Morning guys and gals of CalGuns,
Went out to Steele Peak yesterday for a few hours. I was both encouraged and discouraged. First, I finally saw the first group of shooters EVER that were diligent in cleaning up the area they were shooting. JUST HAD TO SHAKE THEIR HANDS! They did a great job and I'm sure SOME others do the same. As for the folks that don't seem to give a rats behind or care what others think and continue to leave any crap from their garage they want to shoot the hell out of: PICK UP YOUR CRAP! Take a trash bag, pick up all of the targets and stuff you blew to bits. PICK IT UP!... Don't think BLM won't shut this shooting area down! One other note: Word is that recently, someone was hit by a round, a frag, a ricochet or something and frankly, with all the new shooters and obviously inexperienced firearm handlers, it's little wonder. I heard dozens of ricochet's from a group that had set up an EZ-up and with all the high powered stuff we like to shoot, those projectiles WILL fly over the hill and hit whatever... hopefully no person or item of value. Don't shoot the rocks! Our freedoms and liberties are being taken away by a few and given away by the idiots that will not "police" themselves! Please use a few SIMPLE rules: -Clean up your lane...(the space between where you pull the trigger and your targets)...even if it is other "idiots" junk...and your empties! -Know what is beyond your down range and strive to NOT SHOOT ROCKS! -If someone is down range and setting up targets, cleaning up etc. TAKE A FREEKIN break and hold your fire! Anyone that thinks a projectile or frag isn't going to hang a 90 degree turn and hit someone or something is ignorant! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE AND SAFE! We all like to shoot here so don't hesitate to tell other folks to be safe and CLEAN UP! THEY AIN'T GONNA SHOOT YOU...you can be nice about it! OK, I'm jumpin' off my soapbox...fer now... So that said...When is the next area clean-up? Last edited by 2ShotsNoDucks; 01-03-2014 at 10:29 AM.. Reason: grammar |

I went out to Steele Peake this morning because I had reloaded some 12 GA rounds and wanted to make sure that they were performing like I wanted.
I'm good to go again. There were alot of guys shooting down by the road {entrance} and I drove up the "hill" and set up the clay pigeon launcher..couple of younger guys shooting next to me.... Guys! Ranger Rick is gonna report back to Palm Springs that Steele Peake shooters don't appreciate a shooting site and I wouldn't be surprised if we get this site closed down in the future. I guess I'm really old school...I am dumbfounded to why anyone would take "glass bottles out" and shoot and NEVER PICK up a single piece of glass. I shot 3 boxes of 12's...then raked up for a hour and I had a trash can 1/2 full of shotgun rounds. What's with fellow shotgunners...they don't think that once fired hulls should be picked up? The grandson and I just bought 6 lbs of Red Dot and 2000 Winchester 209's and 100 lbs of reclaimed shot. WE NEED this place to shoot and I'm not on a one man campaign to keep this open...I certainly don't want to drive up to Barstow and the open desert area to shoot. Just pick up and take more than what you bring in...you wouldn't litter at home...why would you do on this site what you wouldn't do at home? Have a good evening... |

Be advised also, that per the leo rangers who were at the first clean up, shooting at the lower area is against the law and you may be cited. The reasons is that area is not 150yrds. from the road as required.
Yes, I know a lot of people shoot there, especially those whose vehicles won't make it up the hill, but per them, it is still illegal. Just a fyi. |
