My FIL has had a Performance Center 44 Mag Hunter on his paperwork for 15 years. Totally up to the IA what they allow.
How did you know?? Ever since I moved to this state I've been focused on other hobbies... I was ALWAYS a .45 guy, and all my CA friends shoot .40. The only reason I'm interested in .40 is because they shoot it, so ammo will be plentiful. I've never shut a .40 before, I used to despise them. I'd prefer a Sig, but everything that compares to the size of the MP 40 is a .380! Maybe I should look into a compact Glock .45?

The Glock 36?

I have one on my permit. It is virtually identical in size to the G26, but it's only 6+1.
When I renew in December it will be replaced with the G30. Only a bit thicker, but 10+1, or 9+1 with the short mags.

Here's some comparisons for you.

Glock 19, Shield, Kahr P380

Top to bottom, G26, G36, G30

G26 vs G36

Top to bottom, G30, G36, and G26.
The G30 has the 10rd mag, the mag is flush with the rear step using the 9rd mag:

Live scan going on over two weeks now, the website says it only takes 48-74 hours. What is going on? When I call the automated line the machine rarely understands my submission. How long did it take y'all?

Sweet comparisons, thank you. I'm weary of Glocks for CCW because the trigger is about as bad as a double action revolver for me.

Get used to it.

CCW qualification does not generally allow for using a single action on revolvers, and on semi-automatics, they frown on (or flat out don't allow) anything lighter than 3-4 pounds.

Factory Glock trigger pull us right around 5.5 and pretty consistent. Shield is up around 7, but again, once the gun is broken in it smooths out nicely.

You don't WANT a "hair trigger" in a defensive situation. Your adrenaline is going to be pumping, your heart racing, your hands shaking, and your fine motor skills are going to be out the window.

A competition level trigger would quite possibly result in a premature firing when you slip your finger into the trigger guard.
When SHTF you are going to squeeze that grip like your life depends on it.

Highly recommend the shield in 9MM...my EDC and shoots like a BIG gun.

Ask someone you live with to violently wake you at random some night.

Not physical, just flip on the light and make a crap-ton of noise yelling your name.

That's what you will experience during a defensive shooting.

Called the CCW unit at the Sheriff's Department, they said the Livescan has been completed and received, (although the Sacramento # for livescan checks says it is still in process) now my CCW application is sitting on the Sargent's desk waiting for Conditional Approval. I was told that it should take no longer than 3 weeks. The status for conditional approval is received via email, is that correct?

In the free state that I came from, Open Carry was legal. If I recall correctly, the only two places I've been kicked escorted out of were Raising Cane's Chicken and Costco. Even the banks were OK with me carrying, me and the teller would talk about our favorite pistols!

LOL!

My first walk was at the shopping mall and then a restaurant. It wasn't until a week or so that I had to go to Walmart.

Yes, once live scan returns, they will submit it for review. If all looks good, you will receive your conditional approval via email unless they'd want you to do a psyc eval. It'll probably be right around the 2/3 weeks mark.

Rethink your choice in the Shield 40. If you like the .45, stick with it. I'm a .45 ACP guy and do have the Shield 40 on my permit. I've been shooting for 25 years and have put well over 100K rounds down range. The recoil is snappy compared to a .45. The gun does feel great in your hand though. I can't use the tip of my finger and get good accuracy from my Shield. I switched to a full phalanx (joint) trigger pull and now can get very small groupings.

Interesting....I have heard that more than once, for the Shield

Will have to try that.

The S&W Shield in 9mm is a wonderful pistol, generally and for CCW. I personally went smaller from there on, but I still give credit where credit is due. But the very same Shield in .40 is nasty. I kicks like a donkey, and is absolutely no fun to shoot. You can sell a Shield in 9mm any day of the week, but the Shield in .40 is pretty much sale-proof.

Also look into alternatives, such as the Glock 26, and, if your issuing agency approves non-roster, the Glock 43.

Whole process took me three months from initial to licensing. Do the training with Trent Butler at F.A.S.T. OC. Anyone else and you're destined to fail.

I already want to trade my M&P for a Kimber Pro CDP II!

You'll be sorry.

I bought an Ultra Covert intending to replace my G36 with it.
It's heavy and does not conceal as well.

Instead, I'm stepping up to a G30 when I feel the need to carry more than the Shield.

Default CCW

For what it's worth. I applied for my CCW 2 months after the San Bernardino terrorist attack. Took 10 months to get the interview. I filled out a long questionnaire, got finger printed and paid my fees but was never interviewed by anybody. DOJ took 3 months to process (Karmela Davis was not happy with citizens being armed, so stalled as long as she could). Took another 3 months to be scheduled for the range at the Sheriff's facility in Devore (almost impossible not to pass) then 2 weeks to pick up the permit. Nobody showed up at my house or talked to my neighbors (at least no one said anything). Also, there was no "good cause" requirement. Second amendment is good enough in S.B. County. Every one in the Sheriff's Dept. was helpful and supportive. It just took a while.

That was your interview.

Unless you are like the Apple Valley resident my CCW instructor spoke of, they visited and at least left a business card. Neighbors may not have said anything.

Not exactly true.
When we applied, "Personal protection" was sufficient. Since the latest Peruta ruling, they want something a little more intelligently articulated. The standard hasn't changed, they just want the applications on file to be a little more immune to scrutiny.

Absolutely. They are doing the best they can with limited resources in the largest county in the country (larger than quite a few states!)

Review your application.
Good Cause Statement
If the CCW license is desired for self-protection, the protection of others, or for the protection of large sums of money or valuable property, you are required to explain and provide good cause for issuance of the license. For example, has your life or property been threatened or jeopardized? Explain incidents and include dates, times, locations, and names of police agencies to which these incidents were reported.

Details of reason for applicant desiring a CCW license.
