Question CHP ordered SIG M400 rifles?

Did a search, didnt find anything.

The word is CHP went with SIG M400 rifles for their fleet. Sig was not going to let S&W get the next contract and might have even taken a loss per rifle just to secure the contract.

Google search showed this-
Quote:
The CHP will apparently soon be replacing their AR rifles with the SS/M400. Many of their rifles are M-16 hand-me-downs from DOD and Colt HBAR Sporters.
Any other word or intel?

Haven't heard anything but I am not surprised. I have heard Sig is pushing hard for LE sales. Now that they are caught up with the federal orders.

I have a close friend that is CHP and he mentioned this last time we went shooting. He also said that he heard rumblings about switching to the m&p down the road too.

You don't need an assault weapon with muzzlebreakers to pop tires, a musket is just fine for that.

In all seriousness what's the reason for the change?

All of the ARs are old Govt Colt hand me downs or loaners.

From Goggle-

Yes, they are getting the M400s, and have started to receive (according to our CHP customers). San Joquin County Sheriff also are receiving 200 or 400, cant remember which, Sig rifles as well.

Sweet. Should be on the state contract then. Wonder what kind of pricing they negotiated?

Sounds like SIG did everything they could to secure this contract, even take a loss if needed. They were going to get it either way.

Many of the rifles in CHP inventory are Vietnam era ARs. Im not sure the reason for the M400, they don't seem like they will fit in the Elektrolocks. CHP tested the Sig pistols but for some reason they went with the S&W despite the Sig testing much better. I think there were politics involved.

The rifles we had in our station armory (NOT CHP) were old Colt / RRA Frankenbuilds with ridiculous slop and play between the uppers and lowers. The funny thing is, they all had newer Eotechs and they all worked fine. I took one to a 2 day carbine class (Because I had to) and this old beater rifle ran like a champ the whole time. They didn't win any beauty contests but I carried one every night and had utter faith in them.

The 1:12 barrels will do that with green-tips.
Make sure yours is loaded with 55gr bullets.

As a disclaimer I'll say I don't work for CHP and know nothing of this, but... I have been impressed at what I consider to be a strong move by Sig to get agencies to switch to their guns. Offering up some really cheap prices to try to entice folks to go with their product. I wanted to do a personal buy but my chief says no bueno.

It's official CHP are getting Sig Sauer m400 in batches of 300 in each unit. OGGun you are right it doesn't fit in the Elektrolocks. But they have a new bracket that goes in between the Elektrolock and lowers the Elektrolocks 4.5 inches. How do I know all of this?? I install them for CHP. I've just installed 3 already.

Here's the request for bids. Closed last June.
http://www.bidsync.com/DPX?ac=view&auc=1921359

Still no contract I can find.

ETA: Here's all the responses to the bid. Looks like Sig won at $635 for the fixed and $695 for collapsible stocks.

Only three? Our office has had them for two months. Great shooting rifle!

Bids show 14.5” rifles. Are the new rifles NFA?

I am having trouble understanding old is bad. The M-1 and the m-1A1 are old weapons that work just fine. I would guess the amount of rounds fired by the CHP in the rifle on their car is not very high.

Just appears to me we need new guns regardles or we have a budget. How often are they shot in anger?

Trade people bring their own tools to the job why is police work different?

What I heard are these old Colt govt rifles are worn and tired. It was time to finally upgrade to something modern.

Aren't Mil branches and LE Agencies exempt from NFA rules?

CHP definitely needs new rifles. All of the ARs I've seen have the ole Vietnam era triangle foregrips. Glad to hear they are getting upgraded.

I just wanted to add re: keyholing at 25 meters. We also have a lot of DOD hand me down A1 type m-16s, I can't believe how many guys are totally unfamiliar with the specific issues regarding the real slow twist rate in those old barrels. If they (folks you're talking about) were trying to run heavier projectiles in that slow twist could that have something to do with it?

Thanks. Yeah, my best buddy works there as well and he confirmed it at the time I posted the OP. We also ordered some M400s through the officer program and they should be in soon.

So do the Officers like the M400s so far?

No, civilian LE agencies are not exempt from NFA requirements. The paper work still has to go in to ATF for any NFA weapon. The only difference is that there is no charge to LE agencies, and the approval comes back a bit faster.

I think we know by now that SIG wants into the CHP and California market really bad. May have sold the rifles at or below costs.
