Default What Has the NRA Done for Me?

Quote:
Holder and his aides “listened politely” but made no commitments [to new gun control measures], said Paul Helmke
Quote:
Mexico drug violence not an 'emergency,' White House says

While drug violence continues to spread in Mexico, White House officials have decided the situation doesn’t rank as an “emergency” under federal rules, officials tell NBC News. The decision scuttles — at least for now — a controversial proposal requiring gun stores in four Southwest border states to report multiple sales of semiautomatic assault rifles and other long guns to authorities.
For all those folks who wonder what the NRA has done for them, read the above. That kind of political power comes from 4,300,000 dues paying members and relationships forged on the Hill. It doesn't come from "tough talking" do nothing "no compromise" organizations who can't play nice with other political parties.

I just wish the NRA would stop supporting people such as Harry Reid! Other than that, the NRA is viable!

I don't get how that dude is a democrat lol.
All his political positions are conservative in nature.

Confused.
At least he is pro-gun though.

On the gun issues Reid has been more of an asset than a problem to us.

The NRA is all about the 2A. If a Democrat is strongly pro 2A, there's no reason they won't support them.

The NRA supports him because he's useful on 2A issues. It's only supposed to deal with 2A issues, not with whatever other causes you, me, or any other of their members may agree with. Aside from doing otherwise being inconsistent with the NRA's mission, one of their strengths is in only judging politicians based on their support for 2A, regardless of party affiliations or stances on other issues.

This has been banged out time and time again.
Like others have stated. The "R" in NRA doesn't stand for Republican.
Think of the NRA as a ONE ISSUE association.....and that's RKBA.
They support for whom is the most Pro 2A....that's IT.

+1... the NRA giving Harry Reid a favorable rating has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with what Reid has done for gun owners, the shooting sports and 2A.

People need to understand that NRA is not a partisan political organization and that 2A is neither a liberal or a conservative only issue.

+2 , Although it doesn't have anything to do with Ried, I bought 6 nfa stamps while he was in office. Meanwhile the govanator was signing ammo bans, .50bmg bans, and all kinda of other tax wasting laws at the same time.

The Carson city Sheriff received a phone call from the NRA about marking down firearms on the back of your ccw card and they stopped taking serial numbers as well. The NRA is supported in NV and the elected officials are on board.

It will be nice to see a time when the NRA has the same effect on CA lawmakers....go get em' Wayne!

Sort of. After giving him thousands of dollars toward him campaign, they decided to give him a slap on the wrist for his Supreme Court votes. They didn't support him, but they didn't kick him to the curb either. It is extremely valuable to have a majority leader on our side. He gets us a seat at the table when our (relatively) little state would otherwise be peering through keyholes while big decisions were being made.

If you want to support/join a group that is pretty hard-core "conservative," try the link in my sig line for the Tea Party Patriots.

Now, to get back to the NRA: If they support "liberals" who are pro-gun, and liberals who are pro-gun support the NRA, who's left to oppose the NRA and our RKBA??? That's right: NOBODY! ! !

Our goal is to make our RKBA protected by the 2nd A become something that has strong support across the entire political spectrum so that it is NO LONGER a target of ANY political party.

Sure, figure out your position on a wide range of issues -- debate and argue them. But we want everyone to agree that "gun control" is, in general, not only an unwise policy (i.e., it fosters crime, allows dictators and tyrants to commit atrocities against their own populace, incl genocide), but is also an unConstitutional infringement upon their rights that they will NOT tolerate!

They withdrew it after a bunch of people QQ'ed about it.

People didn't understand that he was the best thing for gun regulations.

The NRA isn't perfect - no really large organization with a long history is. But it's the absolute key group to hold and help make gains. Supporting CGF at the expense of supporting NRA is wildly stupid. Supporting both allows us to hold the line outside of California (while getting excellent support inside California) and advance in California in ways that the nationwide organization never could.

Never, ever, ever choose not to be an NRA member.

I chose to support CGF, but also to do the same for NRA.
CGF is extremely useful, but it's CA only and has limited reach. The NRA serves a different purpose. They're completely different things, even if both are about our 2A rights.

I view it kind of like having an alarm system in your house as well as having insurance. One does not replace the other, and both are very useful.

I also joined the CRPA, and plan to join the SAF next. The more, the better!

Ha ha, I did the same thing. "Free knife!" Sign me up! I am already a CRPA member, so I decieded to go national, Plus Free knife! woot!

Also I got a NRA "Gun Owner Survey" apperently I am an 'important and respected member of my community, when I speak, legislators will listen"!
Whats not to like? Plus the American Rifleman subscription, I dont see any drawbacks to membership. Its good to belong...

Sig line worthy! Esp given the regular NRA bashing that seems to take place.

I would only change one thing in your post: the NRA is doing far more than just "holding the line outside of California," they/we are positively advancing with all sorts of new pro-RKBA bills being introduced in states around the nation. Of course, in about 10 or so states, there are anti bills that will have to be fought. But on the whole, things have vastly improved around the nation over the past 15 years.

I chose not to.

However, I have donated to NRA-ILA several times. At least a normal NRA Life Membership's worth. I thought that would do more good. And I still believe that.

"More" is hard to quantify, as [membership] numbers truly matter in politics. Also, ILA doesn't do many of the great educational and local-assistance type activities that NRA does regularly. So, while supporting ILA surely helps that specific angle, it ignores other important aspects of our fight.

We all have a reason to dislike NRA at some time or another; however, as Gene said, "it's the absolute key group to hold and help make gains".

Every gun owner should be an NRA member. The biggest complaint that I hear is that people don't like all of the extra mail. If that is the problem, here is info straight from the NRA website:
: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?
A: Simply email us at membership@nrahq.org or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.
Hope this info will help.

Regardless of how you feel about the NRA's faults... They are a conglomeration of over 4 million people who feel pretty much the same way as you do about guns. What could be wrong with that?

as bad as Harry Reid is, he is probably the most powerful 2nd Amendment advocate in the Congress for the last 20 years-

I dont know (or care) what his personal views are on the RBKA, but his constituents DEMAND him take the posture towards them that he has.

There is not a similar Conservative who could fill the gap in that presently.

What could be wrong with that is that some of us care about our other rights as much as we care about our gun rights. NRA works against private property rights and supports the government interfering with the delivery of medical care (in some instances turning doctors and nurses into felons that would no longer be able to possess guns). Organizations such as SAF or CGF don't do those things and are worthier of support.

The "sunshine" provided by the NRA - even in spite of the "occassional rain" - is still the best and most powerful of any national Second Amendment rights organization.

Sometimes, in order to get a concession, one must give a concession. All we can do, as supporters of the Second Amendment, is to attempt to minimize or eliminate having to give those concessions.

In order to achieve that, we need the kind of clout generated by a heck of a lot more than slightly over four million members.

I had to bring this thread back to life because of the importance of the organizations working together on the different fronts.

Particularly as important and enlightening is this:

Never, ever, ever choose not to be an NRA member.

We all have a reason to dislike NRA at some time or another; however, as Gene said, "it's the absolute key group to hold and help make gains".
And when I contact state legislators, I tell them that I am a member of the following:
  • National Rifle Association (Life) (4.3 million members)
  • Second Amendment Foundation (Life)
  • Gun Owners of America
  • Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (5200 members)
  • California Rifle and Pistol Association
  • Calguns Foundation contributor 50,000+
  • Gun Owners of California
  • Front Sight Firearms Training Academy (Diamond Life)
  • Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association 160,000 (when discussing issues concerning trucking industry & common sense gun rights)
  • Heritage Foundation 710,000

If more of us could use these numbers when talking to state & federal lawmakers, they would not only listen, but as well... say "how high".

The Brady's and the LCAVs would truly have strokes and not know how and where to come out of their spin motions.

And as an added... I'm trying to find out the membership base numbers of each of the other organizations listed above, eg. NRA has 4.3 million members. I'd like to know how many members the others have, and then we could start saying "I'm a member of the NRA & SAF, etc. with a combined total membership of 5 or 6 million plus.

Does anyone know how many members the SAF and CRPA have, and others listed above (where I don't indicate) have?

Erik.

I just joined the NRA recently, by mailing in a card. How long should I expect it to take for them to send me something?
