Default Best long range scope for ~$1000ish

Just bought a Savage 112 Target in .338LM, looking into glass for it... looking for something in the 6-24x50 range, give or take. Nikon, leupold, vortex, all make something in that price range, anything to be wary of, foggy glass, etc? I know I need a bunch of elevation adj to get out long range, and already have a 20moa base. Would most $1000 scopes be up to the recoil of the cartridge? First focal plane or second? I’m pretty much a novice in the world of optics, any help is appreciated.

Nikon Black FFP or a Vortex Viper PST GEN 2. Either one will work and preform for what you need. I think the Vortex does just edge out the Nikon.

Now if you want end all durability, get a Nightforce. They have a model for about $1200.

If your just shooting paper and steel on your own time and not doing comps where you have to make on the fly calls and adjustments, a second focal plane will work just fine. But once you go to a first focal plane, you really start to see all the benefits.

AA Optics has factory refurbished Vortex Viper PST FFP Gen 1 scopes for $525 right now. It’s an unreal deal on a really nice scope with a great warranty.

Vortex Gen 2 PST scopes are very nice and they're in your price point brand new. I have an Athlon Cronus BTR on my 338LM and you can get these used at a little over $1K, same with Nightforce NSX series scopes. Both a big step above the PST's. Personally I like SFP better than FFP but choices are very limited in higher end scopes.

Default Best long range scope for ~$1000ish

I always recommend SWFA.
https://www.swfa.com/optics/riflesco...rand=SWFA%20SS
They are extremely hard to beat in build quality and value, especially for the cost. It's also nearly impossibly to find dissatisfied customers (problem if you're hoping for a used scope discount). Lifetime warranty and they are rated to 50bmg (at least the fixed magnification scopes). Here's the amazing scope that put them on the map (and honestly you couldn't go wrong with this either, though if you have budgeted 1k, use it on glass):
https://www.swfa.com/swfa-ss-10x42-t....html?___SID=U

For long range applications, if you're hoping to drop less than 1000, the SS HD 10x42 model has a lot of good feedback.
https://www.swfa.com/swfa-ss-hd-10x4....html?___SID=U
If you can raise your budget to 1300, the SS HD 5-20X50 is REALLY nice.
https://www.swfa.com/swfa-ss-hd-5-20....html?___SID=U
Many have compared quality to $2000 range scopes. I'm hoping to get one in a few months.

Picked up the gun today! Been reading reviews til I’m blue in the face. I think I narrowed it down to a couple choices. I’m aware they aren’t “top of the line”, but I think they’ll do for a long time. If I feel the need to upgrade in the future, so be it.

Either of those two are going to serve you well. The Burris reportedly edges out the Vortex, but if it was me, I’d buy the scope I could get the best price on.

I also recommend the Vortex Viper PST Gen II, the Burris XTR II, and add to those the Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x56.

It's a lot of scope for $1200:
  • It has a 34mm tube which the Vortex does not have.
  • It has a locking windage turret, like the Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27x56, which neither the Burris or Vortex have.
  • The light mushy turret clicks of the earlier Ares BTR have been fixed, they now click better than the Burris, and are about on-par with the Vortex.
  • It's a poor man's Vortex Razor HD Gen II, for half the price and lighter too.

BROWNELLS - ATHLON ARES ETR 4.5-30X56MM SCOPE FFP SIDE FOCUS ILL. APRS1 MIL RETICLE
Wait for a 10% discount code and order it from Brownells. They are not charging sales tax yet, as some other online retailers are already doing.

killer sale on the Athlon Ares BTR right now. $300 off from the manufacturer. It is one nice piece of glass too.

https://store.bbc-m.net/optics/athlo...memorial-sale/

Next choice for double the price would be the Ares ETR This thing is a beast. 34mm tube FFP 4.5-30X56 32mils/110MOA of internal adjustment.

Does not show whether the $699 is for the FFP or SFP versions of the scope. I'm guessing SFP, in which case, $699 is just an okay price. $699 for an FFP version would be a steal.

i noticed you had one MIL scope and one MOA

personally, i would suggest MIL but you may hear other opinions.
the only reason i would choose MOA would be if all by friends were using it and i wanted to speak the same dope language as everyone i shoot with.

After a week or so of reading and watching comparisons vs the Vortex Viper PST Gen 2 I pulled the trigger on a BTR. The $549 sale price is still on going with free shipping and no tax (shhhhh). Apparently they improved the mushy turrets. I'm just getting into long range precision so thought this would be a great start.

I think the best scope going at around $1K is the Athlon Cronus BTR. It's slightly more than $1k but can get found used for that price. Phenomenal for that price.

Go with the Bushnell HDMR they are great scopes and built like a tank. I have a couple and have had no problem getting out to 1000 yards on my 300 win mag and my 6.5. I did just buy a gen 1 Razor 5-20 and it is a nice scope to. The glass is a little better on the Razor but the Bushnell is not bad.

Apparently that price has expired. My order was cancelled, they did offer me the same scope at their cost but I think I'll go with a viper pst gen2 5-25x50 from eurooptics.

Supposedly they will soon be offering the ETR with a similar discount. I suspect it will appear July 4th.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll wait before purchasing. The seller did offer to sell the BTR at their cost to fix issue (which wasn't bad, but at that point the $699 Viper started to look more attractive), so kudos to them for trying.

MK Machining had the same BTR sale that everyone else had, but they also included a throw lever and level. They just sent out an email with the following info:

Our Ares BTR sale went so well we're going to extend it to the ETR model as well. MIL, MOA, black, brown, we'll have em all. Bet you won't beat this price, stay tuned.
