It’s not really an interview you are called in to go over the application and sign the documents that need to be witnessed by the Deputy. He said it could take up to 6 or 7 months, I think it may depend on where you are in the list of 40 plus applicants. There is only one investigator assigned to do the background checks and I’m sure it takes time to call everyone that is listed on the applications. I'm hoping that those in front of me have no siblings or friends so it will go quickly.

The application process which includes the Live scan (finger printing) cost $240 that you pay when they hand you your CCW card. If for some reason you are refused a CCW card they don't charge you.

Not included:
CCW course $150
Psychological evaluation $150

I just had my live scan done this morning took about 5 minutes. Now I wait for the DOJ to run my background check and get the results to the Sheriffs dept.

Default CCW Class

In case any of you are interested in attending a CCW class you can contact David Matthews at 408-506-1884. David is very familiar with the San Benito CCW process.

There is a classs scheduled on January 4th and has been posted on the website.http://www.firearmtraininginstitute.com/index.htm

California CCW Classes are county-specific and we have authority to teach classes in Monterey County, Santa Cruz County, Alameda County, Yuba County, Sutter County, El Dorado County, Sacramento County, and San Joaquin County. Other Counties within California are being added as approved by the County Sheriff.

Hope to see some of you there.

Can you take the class before you submit the application and have it count?

I got an update today from the Sheriffs department that my background check came back from the DOJ and they are moving forward. I'm hoping this will be done by March

I submitted my application about 4 months ago and was told it may take another 4 to 5 months to complete.

Hi all, I'll be applying soon here in San Benito County. I keep reading that the character reference letters may not be legal, but what is one to do? Is there some organization out there that talks to these agencies to let them know? Wish me luck.

CCW update: I'm about 6 months into this so far. I got a letter last week informing me that i have an appointment on Saturday Feb 22 to take the 500 question psych test. The letter stated that If i miss this date it may delay my application process. Sounds like fun after that I'm off to spend $150 with a psychologist.

I decided to see how much training i can do while i'm waiting for SBC Sheriffs department to complete my CCW application.

Since August of 2013 I have been able to complete the following.

Education, Training and Certifications:
• NRA Certified Pistol Instructor
• NRA Personal Protection outside the Home
• NRA Certified Range Safety Officer
• Handgun Safety Certificate Instructor
• California Concealed Firearm License (CCW) class. CCW permit in progress.•
• Front Sight, Defensive Handgun (2 day)
• CPR, First Aid and AED certified

I have provide copy of all certificate to my CCW coordinator to add to my file. Also I will be submitting a CCW course curriculum to SBC Sheriffs for approval to teach. I'm hoping that I will receive my CCW permit before they approve the curriculum.

I will update all of you after the psych test.

Jay

I'm excited for you buddy! I was talking with a medic friend who works and lives there who was flat out denied in person. He even has documented threats on his life from his days in Fresno. I'm hoping you fare better see if we can get this running a bit smoother.

Last Saturday I took the psych exam with 5 other applicants. The test is 567 questions long all True/False. I'm schedule to see a psychologist in 2 weeks after that it's all down hill

So how does that work? Take the multiple choice test one day, then come back to lay on the shrink's couch a few weeks later? Or do you just come back and discuss your results?

I ran into the sheriff at the gym tonight, but I didn't want to bombard him with questions in the parking lot.

You take the test in Hollister at the Sheriff’s department on a Saturday, when you finish the test you are given a time (your choice) and date (predetermined) for your appointment which in my case March 8th. I’m not sure what I will be asked my guess is that he/she will review my answers and ask me additional questions (I’m not sure if laying on a couch will be required but I will let you know). If all goes well with the meeting they will notify the CCW coordinator that I’m ok and the process continues to move forward.

Had my evaluation on Saturday it took about 45 to 50 minutes. I think it went well there didn't seem to be any trick questions. The Dr. will submit his report to the SB CCW coordinator today or tomorrow.

Good to hear.

Was it mostly going over your test responses or was it a straight up shrink session as if you'd walked in the door with a problem?

May be covered in other threads but why is all this testing required? I understand that jumping the hoops is a reality at this point in space but I thought it was rendered moot by the state standards that are laid out.

It's allowed if the issuing authority:

1. Chooses to
2. Requires it of ALL applicants.

I think it's BS. I always wonder if they're looking for overt mental illness or if, say, someone talked to a counselor at a difficult time in their lives.

I don't like ambiguity in government and wish the process and standards were the same statewide.

We didn't spend a lot of time going over the psych test. He asked specific questions like:

Why do you want a CCW permit.
What do you do for a living.
Do you have a gun safe.
Do you have small children in the house.
Do you have any children in the house.
What does your wife think about having guns in the house.
Can you kill someone.

It's still not over after the Dr. sends in my evaluation to the Sheriffs office, they still need to call my family and friends to complete the personal background check on me. Not sure how long i have to wait until they start that process. I have instructed everyone that i listed to make sure they return the call ASAP.

That last one is deceptive, anyone can kill somebody but I only wish to stop somebody from hurting or killing me or one of my family.

It's been a couple of weeks since my interview with the psychologist, haven't heard anything from the Sheriff’s department.

Hopefully no news is good news

I talked with the CCW coordinator today and he informed me that he has completed the personal background check (calling friends and family) on me and has submitted my application to the Sheriff today for review. He didn't see any reason why the Sheriff would reject it. So i wait for that final phone call.
