Default Good range pistol for a small lady

Probably other posts like this but I couldn't find one quickly that is so similar.

So, the g/f has actually been bringing up wanting to go to the range. She mostly enjoys shooting the 10/22, but that's because we haven't found her a good handgun to shoot yet.

She wants to practice shooting pistol, but my G23 is intimidating for her, maybe a little big in her hands. She's 5'2 and has small hands. The others are bigger, except for the S&W airweight... but it's so short it isn't fun to shoot very long.

I'm looking for something that would fit well in her hands with pretty tame recoil.

Walther P22 is at the top of the list, but only because I'm not sure of any 9mm that are small enough to fit a small hand, yet hefty enough to absorb some of the recoil.

Any other suggestions besides a P22 to make it enjoyable for her to shoot and become more confident with pistols?

One note is she did like my buddy's old 5" 38sp. That seemed to handle fine for her. I'd really like to find a good pistol though so we can have fun taking advanced courses together after she builds some confidence with the pistol.

My ex loved my non ca xd 45 4" so much so her sister bought the california version. Ca version has a larger handgrip though so it might be to big for her >.<

the problem with an airweight is THAT IT IS AN AIRWEIGHT. it is no fun to shoot because it is light and there is no metal to absorb any of the energy! i almost did not pick up another pistol after firing one.

there are many threads here in the Ladies Forum. i think you'll find the first and best rule is to take her to a range and rent a variety of pistols for her to try out. let her decide what she's comfortable with.

i found the ruger sp101 to be a fine gun but too big for my hand so opted for a s&w model 60 instead. i went on to purchase other j-frame and k-frame smiths as well.

many like the ruger gp100 and the smith 686 but both are too big for my hands.

it really is best to let her try them out and decide for herself. what works for one woman does not necessarily work for another.

good luck!

If she likes the 38sp then what about the Ruger SP101? Comes in 38sp and 357...once she becomes more comfortable. Plus it is small enough to fit in her hands. And oh yeah, it is made in America

The best that I've seen for learning to shoot well, for small hands, is the Kahr K9.

Simple to operate (nice trigger), not too snappy with it's steel frame and very accurate

I was working with a father/daughter pair the other day and the 12 year old daughter could handle my polymer framed CW9, but it wouldn't be fun for enough rounds to learn with

G26, 9mm. Comfy, small easy. As Lu said, Ruger SP101 357/38. I switched out my grip for hogue, and its been awesome. Either way, you can't go wrong!!! I just don't like "POCKET" guns, the ones slightly smaller than a G26? My hands are small, really small. And I fumble with these, so size does matter, and weight, cause will help with recoil.

Take her to range and do a day of rentals to see what she likes!

S&W M&P 9mm gets my vote. Cheap ammo, and very soft shooting. The small grip insert really slims things down, and the ergonomics are light years ahead of Glock. If SHTF 9mm with proper loads is also a very potent fighting tool.

Revolvers are fine, but the DA pull on some is too much for some people with poor grip strength so they resort to cocking the hammer all the time. Not a good practice IMHO if bad things happen. That said a 4" .357 loaded with .38 Spl. can be a very soft shooter, and can be very accurate without being too heavy.

I would stay away from snubbies in general for female shooters not looking for a CCW as they are often hard to shoot well, so people tend not to want to shoot them very often.

I can think of a few that might work okay. The SIG P232 (.380) stainless typically comes with Hogue rubber wrap arounds that, because they are on such a slim pistol, aren't too much of a handful for small hands, and make for a very soft shooting blow back type pistol. Plus it's all SS construction makes gives it a little extra weight.

Also, a S&W K or L Frame revolver (357 loaded with .38 or just .38) with the old style service grips would not be too much of a handful either.

Or, anyone of the 9MM pistols like the M&P mentioned above that has interchangeable back straps. Also, H&K pistols like the P2000 are very soft shooters due to HK's recoil reduction system, and very ergonomic. The downside there is that they are expensive.

You might want to try a few different range rentals with her if you have that option. In my experience recoil is more psychological that physiological. I have a 16 year old daughter who is fairly petite and she has handled 357SIG, .40S&W and .45ACP. She definitely prefers 9MM, but she can and has handled more stout rounds. So I'm thinking with a range rental, you'll be able to get your G/F more comfortable with recoil without laying out your hard earned cash until you find the right gun.

I think the key points here are smaller size grip and tame recoil...allowing for a pleasant experience for a new, small, female shooter to enjoy shooting more and gaining confidence.

I went through a similar search for a gun for my petite wife. What I found that worked was a sig p239 in 9mm.

-Single stack 9mm...very small grip...very short trigger reach even in DA. The DA/SA trigger is superb in this gun.
-It's a compact with a small grip, but the frame and slide is not that compact. In fact that is one of the downsides of considering the p239 as a carry gun; it's just too hefty. But for the purpose of what I was looking for....small grip, more heft to tame recoil..it fit the bill nicely.

With a good high grip, the p239 in 9mm is a very tame, soft shooting gun with a grip that she can get her small hands around. It's been perfect for us.

my girlfriend likes shooting my 9mm glock 19(and just bought a gen 4 glock 26), but her favorite to shoot is full size steel 1911's, these have really tame recoil.

How about the GSG 1911 or the Sig Misquito? I have a GSG and my bro has the Sig. No recoil and quite a bit of fun as well as cheap to shoot.

My wife LOVES her XD 45 and 1911's. The grip is a little big but not too big. She handles it very well. My GP100 shooting 38's is easy to shoot in single action only. Trying to shoot double action, the reach to the trigger is too far and the stock hammer spring makes her struggle to operate the trigger properly. The Ruger SR 9 fits her PERFECT. It's a wee bit slimmer than a 1911, has a grip angle similar to a 1911 and absorbs the powerfull 9mm very well. The SR9 is worth looking at.

Yeah, my GF likes the Mosquito, good fit to her hands and nothing in recoil.

Get her to the range to try different things, you know the drill.

SigSauer Mosquito in Pink

i've got this but in all black of course. identical to the 226 but shrunken down to only 90% of the full size. shoots 22LR for cheap plinking/target, low recoil for a small lady, and it's pink so she knows it's hers!

My wife is 5'2" and has very small hands and a small frame. She's shot my G19 and G26 quite a bit, and the G26 feels better for her when there's a pinky extension on it.

However, she really likes holding the 1911 frame more since it feels more comfortable & natural in her hands, but she cannot handle my .45 pistol. She's getting used to my 9mm 1911 but her first choice is to use my .22LR 1911 pistol. Very little to no recoil at all and it's very easy to handle & shoot. Great for a smaller woman or one who might get easily intimidated by larger calibers.

Those hand cruncher tools at big5 help with grip, I started using those a while ago, helped increase hand strength, I shoot 40 and 45 just dandy. Worth a try.

My ex-gf liked my formerly owned S&W Sigma 9mm, but then again, I wouldn't hold her opinion too high... I think generally, when it comes to centerfire cartridges, 9mm is a hit with the ladies.

SiG P239 is great for small hands and so is an HK P2000. Springfield XD is ok as well. I have really small hands for a guy and these felt the best grip size wise. I had an M&P and even with the smallest backstrap, I still felt like I had to stretch for the trigger.

Honestly though, my two main guns are a Glock 19 and a 1911. The simple trigger systems and the low bore axis overrode the fact that they are slightly too big for me. In the end your girlfriend will have to just pick what she likes best.

I would not get a P22. The ones I've seen tend to have problems soon after 20K rounds. I would suggest a .22lr though. If she likes wheel guns, a Ruger Single Six can't be beat. If she wants a semi auto, a Ruger MKI, MKII, MKIII, 45/22 a Browning Buckmark would be my top two choices for newer guns. Any High Standard, Browning Challenger, etc. would make a great choice for a used gun. Except for the Ruger 45/22, I suggest staying away from any plactic .22lr. They all seem to develop problems soon after 20K rounds. (Now that I've said that, there will be a few people posting about thier P22, Mosquito, S&W22, Neos, etc and saying that I'm wrong because they have fired 500-2000 rounds through their gun without any problems.) Anyway, everyone needs a few .22s and your GF is no different. She can shoot to her hearts content for a few dollars a day. While she is enjoying her new toy, she can be saving all the money she would have been spending on centerfire ammo and then buy a centerfire handgun with it. That way, she'll have two guns and a lot of trigger time instead of not being able to afford ammo to shoot her first gun enough.

I went through this process with a female shooter (Wendy) on another board. I met Wendy and her husband range.

I had with me a S&W M37, Kahr K9, heavily customized Kahr E9, Taurus PT111, EG Makarov, and Glock 27. Wendy took a liking to the E9 and the shop had a nice one for sale. Wendy bought the shop's E9.

My point is let your wife pick and choose for herself. I would only interfere if she were to want a .25 etc. or a weapon I knew wasn't quality.

I shoot a Smith and Wesson MP 40. You can change grip sizes, it's the right weight and is good for self defense.

On the other hand.
I absolutely love my Baretta Tomcat and S&W Bodyguard m649 (shooting 38's that is).

Sig mosquito, like others have said.
GSG 1911

You might try getting a 1911 in 9mm. My GF fell in love. So much so, that now I either have to give her mine or buy her one.

M&P 9. Sorted.

In all seriousness though, it's hard to beat in terms of ergos and fit. To give you an idea of how small my hands are, with a proper grip on a Glock 19, I cannot even pull the trigger. My finger doesn't have the length to actuate the trigger safety. And I find that the M&P allows me to get nearly the entire pad of my finger on the trigger. The ONLY other gun that allowed me to do this was a Kahr K9. XD's, Glocks, Sigs, Beretta's, FN's, tried 'em all. No dice. Always back to the M&P for me. You may also want her to try the M&P45. Believe it or not, I thought it had less felt recoil than the 9.

In my experience though, women can sometimes shoot bigger guns better than men can. I once saw a 5'3" petite Asian girl at the range blasting through a cylinder of full powered .357 magnum, no sweat. It's not the caliber or even necessarily the size of the gun, it's how the grip interfaces with the hand. Have her try whatever she wants, you may be surprised.

Thanks everyone. I found a local Mosquito at a fair price. I think the 22 sounds like a good way to get her used to running a pistol.

I haven't had the chance to take her out to "try on" something that fits her well yet, but I'll plan on that too after she gets some trigger time on the squito.

Oh, here we go with women and guns . Small frames don't displace recoil as well as larger frames.

I've been through this conversation sooo maaaany times I can't see straight with new girls / women we take to the range.

"Oh, but it's so small and cute!"

I typically take an LC9, Kahr PM9, Small frame glocks, medium frame glocks (G19, G23), Large frame glocks (G17), and a G34. Also, I take a P239, a P229, and a P226. Lastly we take 3", 4" and 5" kimbers / les baers etc.

First they get to use / fire / get comfortable with a Glock SIRT practice pistol.

They get to shoot a Neos .22 cal, or a Ruger 22/45 first. They may end up also firing a P229 with a .22 conversion kit.

It's almost always the same. The recoil of an airweight or a PM9 or an LC9 is very annoying to them.

Once they move up to a 9mm, .40, .38, or .45, the choice is almost always the same:

They like the medium or large frame Glock 9mm (manageable recoil in a larger frame), or they like the single action .45's. Most find the Sigs heavier; no XD's or Berettas in my house.

If a woman likes shooting a 1911, locate a Colt Government .380....the full size 7 rd one not the Mustang. The "baby Government Model" is a scaled down 1911 pattern pistol that handles just like a 1911 w/o a grip safety.

While it does handle just like a 1911, there are functional issues specific to that platform...to say nothing of the caliber issues.

If the 1911 platform is the one of choice, I can highly recommend the Springfield EMP as extremely functional and accurate

I think you will find there are many single stack 9mm's out there which should be considered. While there are far too many to name them here are a few which I find have a positive end user review: HK P7, Sig 239, or P6/P225, SW 39 series, Ruger LC9, Commander 1911's in 9mm, Kahr PM9 or CW9... that's all I can think of right now.

As for the Sig Mosquito. I have seen waaay to many problems with them for me to ever recommend one. Sure they are inexpensive and there are plenty of them out there that shoot, but I see more Mosquitos returned for repairs (per gun sold) than any other 22. That new GSG 1911 .22 on the other hand is a very nice pistol, especially for the price. Plus unlike the Mosquito, it shoots just fine on bulk ammo and does not require expensive CCI minimag ammo to cycle reliably.

What about a Sig p6/225? Yes its a tad heavy, but it soaks up recoil. Thin, small, and you can tell the backstory about how this pistol was carried around by German Bundespolizei.

I have not had any problems with my Sig Mosquito. I really like it, and so does my GF. I had a couple FTE/FTF's when using some old ammo(unknown brand), but it shoots fine with everything I have. Mini-mags, Remington Thunderbolts, Remington Subsonics, Aguila 60gr SSS, Federal, and Winchester Wildcats.

I would recommend it, not intimidating at all, affordable, fun and cheap to shoot.

My wife just bought a Glock 36 single stack .45cal and she handles it very good.

She also likes to shoot my .380 body guard.

S&W 22A

I've got one with the larger wood grips.
Easy to disassemble and clean.
Works well, fires any form of ammunition, bulk bricks, etc.
No problems with FTF/FTE issues.
