Another grail gun - SVT38

Hey everyone,

2018 has been kind to me so far. I crossed off another gun on my long term want list, a 1939 Tula SVT38. I'll be bringing it to the March WEGC shoot for a test run and likely its last time at the range.

SVT40 added for side by side comparison.

Thanks! The 40's are out there but the 38 was a tough catch. Milsurp1, come to WEGC on 3/11 and shoot it (if it works, hah!)

There is a Russian film from the 80's, "Come and see" that uses the '38 as the protagonist's firearm, it is a grueling movie, and I always think of it, when I see the SVT38 - great collectable rifle though!

I felt pretty lucky picking up my second Nazi-marked G43 recently, but this is awesome (particularly because I'm a huge SVT40 fan, my favorite rifle, ever.)

You can find SVT-40s all day long but this, a SVT38, so incredible! Thanks for sharing something so unique!

It's funny, you know of them, hear of them, then someone posts beautiful pictures here on Calguns and it then gets bumped to the top of the "get list".

Very cool gun, James! Never seen an SVT-38 up-close, though it is quite distinctive with that externally-mounted cleaning rod, kind of like a Kropatchek rifle.

If you're gonna shoot it, I recommend you at least replace the springs in the gun with factory new spec SVT-40 springs, and of course set the gas setting to the bare minimum to cycle to be gentle on the gun. Of course probably shoot clean commercial non-corrosive ammo out of it too if you have any of that PPU ammo.

These guns are very hard to find. Even old guys like me saw very few of them. Most seem to be Finnish imports before 68, when InterArms brought in the SVT40 rifles from Finland. Haven't seen one for sale at a gun show since they moved the Great Western to Las Vegas in 2000. Even then they had one for 800. I thought that was a lot of money for a rifle so close to an SVT40. Last time I actually saw one at a show tells the rest of the story.

Thanks guys! I had never seen one in person, whether it be at a range or a show. It's a very satisfying feeling to own one of the few out there.

Syntax - I'll be borrowing the springs from my shooter SVT40. Heavy ball is a no go, but I have the non corrosive light ball. Same stuff I was running in the Maxim. I won't put many rounds through it but it deserves a range trip. Anyone wanting to take a shot or two with it is welcome.

Yeah, that's the kid. I just skipped through the movie again quickly, it looks like the SVT-40 he has is actually two different rifles (editing?). In some shots it does looks like it could be an SVT-38 (cleaning rod is not there and it looks slightly different), in other shots it's clearly an SVT-40.

Awesome movie btw, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in WW2. At the Great Patriotic War Museum in Minsk, Belarus, they have parts of the movie playing on a loop in a mock village display. I took a bunch of photos and a video of it while there, one of these days I'll post it

I'll guess we'll have to watch it sometime to find out, War Movie Night?

It took some skill for the kid starring in the movie to make his horrendous situation believable, but in my opinion he pulled it off. Some might see the evil performances of the German soldiers to be over the top, but given the history of the Dirlewanger SS troops, it was probably spot on.

It's not a spare, I only have the one original SVT-38 mag (had to buy an SVT-40 to get it, haha).

I got it a couple of years ago in anticipation of getting the rifle one day, still looking

This one isn't Finn marked, it is original matching minus the trigger guard. It's likely a Finn however.

Jeez - you're right that is an '40 - memory is a strange thing.

It's a fairly traumatic film - watch with caution, I found it uncomfortably affecting. The kid plays the director as a youngster, based on his memoirs.

The correct magazine for this rifle would be an original condition (not reblued and not electropenciled) one with a completely round hole on the bottom. The round hole magazines like the one shown below were made by Tula. The Izhevsk factory made the holes stadium shaped (flat on the top/bottom, round on the sides)
