Recommend a good priming tool for me
What do you guys use/recommend for priming? I'm looking for a good hand priming tool.
Up to now, I've been using the arm on my lee press. Which is fine, it is just slow, and honestly I mentally cringe slightly every time I lower the ram to "jam" a new primer in the brass. RCBS? LEE autoprime? Thanks in advance. |

I have both the RCBS tools and though they are not perfect they both work just fine - I haven't used the Lee, but I know people who do & they say that it works just fine.
if I had to buy them over again, I would probably just pick the cheaper of the two. |

My RCBS hand primer has been good to me.
Doesn't accept my lee 223 collet tho.. Not sure if it's the collet or hand primer tho. Works fine with my 308 one tho. |

For years I have loved the original Lee hand priming tool. Simple and it works. However at the SHOT show, I picked up the new Lyman hand priming tool for the reloading club classes. To be honest I like the way it is made. It used standard shell holders and is the easiest I have seen so far to reconfigure. I have not put it to the test yet I will soon, though the real test will be at the Ventura class on the second of next month when it gets tested by a novice loader. For some reason many beginners have trouble with the Lee model. Form how it looks and feels I think it will be my favorite and just may rest on my bench between classes. There is no lift and slot system like the new style Lee and each tray comes with its own cover. Check it out. Also I would like to make a thanks and shout out to Lyman. They are sending us a couple free Lyman #49 manuals to use in the classes.

also I mentioned that I have both the RCBS tools - the universal and the on that uses shell holders. something to keep in mind; the universal uses a spring system for the shell holder, which I have found works fine on larger cases but not as much with smaller ones. I have actually launched .223 cases across the room from them slipping out of the springs. |

For decades I used the Lee Hand Priming Tool. It worked great. It was cheaply made, but it worked. I then purchased a 21st Century Priming Tool, that is made of quality parts and sold my Lee tool on this site. My only derogatory comment about the Lee tool is the parts were not quality, but it worked for decades and they are still making the same tool and selling it for $25.00. I like the Century because it is made of quality machined parts, but it sells for $110.00.

I have worn out/broken several of the old lee tools. They were cheap so I did not mind.
I now have 2 of the new model and do not like them as much. When they go I will get Lyman/RCBS ones.

been using the lee auto-prime that came with my press kit for 110 bucks, lol. also came with the shellholders that fit almost everything. couple things I have to prime on the press but no biggie. I've heard that some folks break the lever on the autoprime, I'm trying but I haven't done it yet. once I do, i'll surely buy the lyman, hands down. it uses the same shellholders you use in a press, which is a no-brainer. was gonna buy the universal RCBS but having learned of it's shortcomings and seeing the lyman made my mind up. more and more I find lyman products to be well-priced and well-designed. still like my lee press and prefer their dies to any others, for ease of use and price. anyhow, looking at a hand-priming tool if I were going to buy a new one, it would definitely be a lyman.

I have two of the RCBS hand primer tools - one for large, one for small... Have worked great on more than 20K rounds.

I like the Lee Autoprime, but if I was going to get a new priming tool it would be the Lee Ergo Prime. Pulling the handle in with 4 fingers is much easier and more natural than pushing it in with your thumb.

I have used the RCBS Universal for several years.
Like someone mentioned, sometimes a small brass will get launched, due to the spring loaded holder and the small case not being centered. Slowing down a little,by giving each case a little twist as you set it in stops that. I would not change from this unit. I load 200 to 800 rounds a month in rifle, depending on the season. |

But I DO like my RCBS APS Universal hand primer. No shell holders at all. Also, the one thing that I like about the older Lees and primer flippers was that the textures were a bunch of dots, so they caught the primers and seemed to flip them over faster, now with them being lines, it seems to take another second ot two. Hey these little things add up. :O I DO enjoy my RCBS APS though. Yeah it was $50 + 20 for the strip loader and another 20 for all the strips I got, but no shell holders and it is RCBS. Fairly easy to change out sizes too. I would have to have a serious look at the Lyman if I did it over again.

I have the older Lee Auto Prime. It's not a bad unit, but then again it would be nice to have a priming tool that takes standard she'll holders instead of ones specific to the Auto Prime. Just something that you might want to consider

The original Lee Auto-Prime if you can still find one. I like that it points away from your face, instead of at you; like the Lyman and the new Lee primer. My 20 year old Lee is a little different from the earlier ones; it doesn't seat the primer with the thumb lever still a half inch from bottoming on the handle. It's maybe an eighth inch gap when the primer is seated. Pretty sure that was done to stop the gorillas from smashing the primers because they thought thumb lever had to bottom on the handle. Like Lee mentioned in his reloading manual. The tray with dots must be ancient; mine have the grooves and they are 20 years old.

I can second what Big Bronco says here, I did my first reloading last year and I too had a hard time with the "feel" of the Lee Hand Priming tool, I somehow got some primers into the chute upside down and ended up trying to prime a case or two with the primer sideways in the pocket. The RCBS we have at the club felt better but I am looking forward to trying out the Lyman on Sunday. I just bought the Lyman Case Prep Xpress a few weeks ago and so far, I am digging it. Lyman seems to make some good stuff.

Get the Lee. I have the RCBS and I can't stand it…
The rods aren't long enough to seat the primer all the way, so I called RCBS and they had to send me another one but I still had to file away some of the handle to get it to seat even with the head. Plus, the Lee is the safer device. The RCBS unit point the case mouth right at your face while priming. The lee points away from you…. |

I have two Lee hand primers - one old and one new - old seemed to hold up better than the new one as I have had to replace parts.
Hand priming is a pain though so I ordered a bench mount primer tool from RCBS but have not mounted it yet. |

I stumbled across this one just like 21st Century's aircraft aluminum hand primer. Sinclair Priming Tool. Just thought I would throw this one into the mix too.

I also had the top plastic break on mine after about six months. I was able to use the large primer plastic with the small rifle primers so I fell back on it. |

The only problem I had with Lee was breaking the lever the new model lever will replace the old. I like the primer tray of the old model simple not a big fan of touching primers. I think being able to use your shell holder is a plus on other models.
