California is like the 3rd largest State in the US. Knowing where you live and how far you are willing to drive is paramount to getting any usefull information out of your question.

Start here. You will need to take hunters education and get your license before you can hunt.

Make friends with a rancher up Mines Canyon and hunt there. Lots of turkeys a deer to shoot up there, but it is all private land.

Failing that, you're in the same boat as the rest of us. You can start by checking out BLM or National Forest land.

Keep in mind that you will need a deer tag and tags for premium huntzones are by lottery system so you will most likely end up with a tag in a zone where success is extremely low.

Good luck getting anyone to tell you their public land hunting spot.

You might consider hiring a guide for your first year. Otherwise you are going to endup driving into a National forest and spending a lot of time for ZERO results.

CA is a big state but that also means there are 39.5 million people here. Public lands are going to be packed with hunters.

Always plan your trips accordingly, call the Administrators of the area gor specifics, and closures. That should be a given.

And always check anything this guy post about restrictions or closed areas.

OP I'm not from up there, so my advice may be lacking, but I think you will be best served heading east to the Sierras, or further east out of state, where the deer are. Though if I lived where you do, I might head north to the B zones.

Iím in the D-11,13,15 zone tag. I have done no scouting but know where there is water and deer in the Angeles National Forest. IF, I can get out the week before, Iíll walk the mile into my spot the night before and wait patiently.
Until then it will be lobster hunting, and spear fishing. The water is still really warm in the north SM Bay and Ventura.

Its expensive, BUT, if you want to successfully go deer hunting, out of state is my best angle. Nebraska in the Pine Ridge Unit up in the northwest corner of the state works great for me and my friends and son in laws. And its COLD at nite. Antelope in Wyoming is great opportunity also. Ditto on D 5, lousy.

Then just pay an outfit here to get a trophy buck, use an outfit that has CDFW PLM Ranch status.

I hunt deer out of state, but it is cheaper for me because I have land rights and other free access.

I vouch for the deer at this outfit:

It depends if you want a trophy, last I knew, a few thousand for a trophy, less for 2 point, email the operation out of D14, the ranch owner is a member here, buts wants to be private as far as I can tell.

You need non-lead ammo throughout the state. No problem, I have plenty of Barnes TTSX 150-168 grain copper ammo. My 2 boxes, 40 rounds should last quite a few seasons.

Not yet, but is some of the Angeles NF b/c condor zone.

Anyways, good job on the Barnes, I have already switched over too, next year it will be statewide anyways.

Good luck!

Sorry, but was said above is true.

Many here payed though the nose, & the yrs to find their areas. It's how it works in the hunting world.

Paying you dues is a rough road, but can bring many happy times also, that you'll likely get no other way. IMHO

Problem with giving erroneous info is someone might believe it. Why buy a 40 dollar box of ammo if you don't have to.

For # 30 God Bless America: Pine Ridge is a large unit, maps will help, but we go to the Ft Robison State Park, yes, a state park, hunting IS allowed on the park areas identified by free maps given out in the park office. An area called Ponderosa is public land a few miles away and my son in laws have scored there more than twice each in the past three trips. 2013, 2016 and 2017.

As for antelope in Wyoming much opportunity all over the state, with lots of walk in access areas around the state. Some will draw out, some will have leftovers first come first sold etc. Horns aplenty, but we hunt leftover reduced fee doe/fawn near Douglas. Some years ago after scoring one on a walk in site and slim pickens for two days we stoped in the middle of the road where I was leaving a piss and I said: " Lord it would sure be good if someone would put us on some private land " and immediately a ford ranger pulls up by us and a man says " how many antelope hunters do we have in this truck " ? We said four and he said bring four licenses and follow me. Man that was fast I said to the Lord. He took us about 3 miles to a locked gate and onto a rolling hills place with ACRES of antelope. We scored several and he has had us back several times as long as that unit didn't draw out. Going again in Nov.

Psalm 1

If you see anybody with a deer on the roof (or sticking out of the trunk) it might be me...more likely not, though, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.
