I'm already a minimalist.
1-AR
1-590A1
1-Pistol (not a plastic junk) 1911
1-(in case Gun Control SHTF/Fun Gun) Thompson Contender

Now all I need is a 308 bolt and revolver.

What about a bolt action? Over/Under? Lever? Pump? Single action Revolver? Double action? Gotta pump those numbers up!

I have, at the minimum, of one AK from each of the former Eastern Bloc countries.
Although not strictly Eastern Bloc, I'm still looking for North Korean AK though.

Don't they just get them from China?

I prefer very few guns over lots of guns. If I needed to thin my collection I would keep these:
selectfire AR15 or RDIAS with lots of uppers.
canik tps9fx for open carry in the desert
walther ccp for ccw

I could target shoot with all three of them, they all make fine defense/offense guns, and I could hunt almost any game in the area with the AR. It is probably why those 3 are the guns I most often take out to the desert with me and anything else is just extra fun.

I kind of did. Pre kids I owned about 100 guns. Once kids came along I thinned down to about 12-15.

For me, minimization has always come down to a series of questions.
  • Where does 'minimal' and 'judicious redundancy' balance out?
  • Which firearms can or truly 'crossover' in their application? Put another way, which firearms can effectively fill all the roles of hunting, self-defense, competition, etc.; particularly in a 'grab it and run' scenario?
  • Which calibers can be readily replenished; i.e., reloaded, steady availability, etc.?
  • How do you know which firearm(s) will work for you if you haven't tried them; bearing in mind that not everyone has access to rentals or loaners?
  • Do I need this or that firearm? If I don't need it or if it is likely to be rarely, if ever, used, what are the opportunity costs associated with spending the money on it?
This was the core of my discussions with the guy 30 years ago and, judging from the posts in this thread, they remain at the forefront for many. To my mind, it's what makes it an interesting thought experiment. It speaks more to your thinking and/or priorities than to the actual firearms themselves.

So far as I know, the guy never arrived at a fully satisfactory answer for himself. At least he hadn't when I last had contact with him. Frankly, I don't know that there is one, at least until you come to terms with the above questions and ultimately understand that every answer will represent a form of compromise.

Don't want to compromise? Fine. Just realize you can't own everything; though some appear intent upon giving it a try. (More power to them.) Accumulate enough and you eventually discover that you can't get around to all of them consistently. Perhaps worst of all is the inevitable awareness that you can't take 'em with you and if the progeny (if you actually have one) isn't "into them," they may ultimately end up in what you'd perceive as 'the wrong hands.'

Someday, I might derive my own answers and come to an 'acceptable' minimization. (Some say I already have, while others wonder why I've 'wasted' as much money as I have over the years on something like... guns.) For now, I'm still 'searching' and that may turn out to be the crux of the matter. Perhaps it's not about a 'minimal' number of firearms, but minimizing one's thinking to the proper perspective and priorities; knowing that perspective and priorities can change over time.

Sure. And I tell myself that each and every time I buy a new one. It just hasn't worked out.
