I have been following the BOB thread, and it hit me, what about a vehicle. I am sure my Elantra wont get me to far down the dirt roads I am sure to end up on the event of invading zombies, I am thinking Jeep Wrangler. But with a wife and 2 kids I wouldnt be able to bring much equipment. Suggestions?

I've always thought that the best bug out vehicle is a horse. They can go alot more places into the mountains than even a 4 wheeler or dirt bike and they gets good grass mileage, which can be found along the way. It would be nice to have a pack horse too.

In the event of a mass evacuation from a city, the ONLY effective vehicle IMO is a dual sport motorcycle which is capable of street/lane splitting & off-road travel. Same goes for severe earthquake with damaged roadways and debris everywhere. If you have a wife/kids to take care of, this is probably not an option, but you're probably not going anywhere fast if you're in a full size car or truck. It's about being able to drive AROUND all the chaos that is key.

Jeep Cherokee. They're dependable, cheap, and easy to work on. They'll go anywhere a Wrangler will, and carry a lot more gear and a few more people. If you can get that Elantra out to BBM though, I bet it would go anywhere with some mud tires on it

HAHAHA, yeah right. Maybe with enough upgrades an XJ will make it the same places. I have an unlimited(06) with a big ol roof rack and a hitch rack. I can pack as much gear as any vehicle that will get you thru the really tough stuff, not just a dusty trail somewhere.

If you guys cant tell by no I am an avid wrangler enthusiast, I 4wheel with the "San Diego 4 wheelers" at least once a month.

Besides, if I saw somebody on a bike and I needed it i would just take it. being exposed like that would suck IMO.

I put 70k on my wr angler in the last 2 years without ANY problems, and they generally run a good 250K before anything major happens. Reliability is not an issue with wranglers, that why they have been making them for so long and they have one of the highest re-sale values of any vehicle in history.

*but if comfort is anything worth having, the wrangler is a FAIL in that department....and gas mileage on mine is around 10-12 on the streets(less off-road) and about 15 or so on the freeway. So that could be a potential problem as well. But other than that, it's going where no other vehicle in the world will get you. To come to any other conclusions delusional.

250K? Let's be realistic here. If you said 25K, I'd buy your story.

Jeep Wrangler 4 out of 10:
http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com...r/Reliability/

FJ Crusier 8 out of 10:
http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com...r/Reliability/

That said, I love Jeeps, and quite frankly, any vehicle that's made to venture off the beaten track. It's got some pros that most other production vehicles can't come close to matching (stock for stock), but just like any other vehicle, it has a few cons working against it contingent on the application it's being used for.

I spend all day with jeep owners and up to 75 jeeps on a single trail(8 hours is the average run length). I dont care how many links you post from people who do a walk around or give their grocery getter opinons. I know first hand, and I have pulled enough other vehicles out to tell you nobody beats the jeep. Now if you want I can fill the next post with links, but I am the only link I really trust. So, unless you have poured several thousand dollars into your (insert any other vehicle here) dont expect it to save your life.

Maybe I'm just bitter, but you would be too if everytime you hit a long trail you had to spend 30 minutes a pop getting sombodies FJ, or land cruiser, or H2/H3, or whatever they think is capable un stuck so you can crawl on at 3-5 MPH over the next 100 miles.

250k is pretty average, look it up.

Edit: cons= comfort and gas mileage(which is huge for a lot of people) but It doesnt bother me now that gas has gone down again

BTW, we do runs all over the place, and I would be more than happy to run a trail with a fello CG'er. If anybody is interested 9/10 there is a run for any class vehicle from stock to insane. www.sd4wheel.com Dont worry, we are not Jeep bias, any make/model vehicle is more than welcome!!

let's not turn this into a pissing contest over vehicles. i've already told you i've got much love for the jeep, and actually plan on getting one somewhere down the road. preferrably a Rubicon Unlimited, but a Sahara will do as well since i'd go all out with D60s and the D44s on the Rubicon would go to waste. it wouldn't be to replace the FJ, but to have a dedicated rock crawler...short of going the buggy route. and, yes, with the solid axle i'll take a Jeep over an IFS vehicle for that type of terrain.

however, going forward...you might want to consider tempering your "250K is pretty average" statement, it's not going to help you win any arguments in favor of Jeep's "reliability."

Now that took about 1 minute, you're more than welcome to look for opposing links if you like, on reliability. This isnt a "pissing contest" this is a real time review and you should be happy i can provide you with so much info on your future purchase.

tell me when you find a link with actual data from a test or a survey saying that average Jeeps reach a serviceable life of 250K before anything "major happens" or requires repairing. a few links with a couple owners here and there saying their particular ride made it to 250K isn't going to cut it.

LOL, show me a link of them saying they DON'T and we can call it a day, I'm the crazy one with all the jeep experience so you have to convince me. So far I have proof, you have a 2 reviews from people who judge the merit of a vehicle by it's ability to get them to starbucks and the mall. Take their word, or take the word of a member of an actual 4x4 club and a jeep owner, who takes them to their limit more often than most people here shoot their guns.

This is hilarious!

There is a reason they have one of the highest resale value year after year.

They're a high resale vehicle because they have a niche in the marketplace, not because of their reliability. The link I provided is an independent study rated by J.D. Power and Associates. Sorry, but I'll take this over the 2 biased reviews from Jeep owners any day of the week.

Quote:
The 2009 Jeep Wrangler reliability score of 4.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).
I'm not the one that made the bold statement that average Jeeps make it to 250K without any major issues, so that's on you to back up. I just stated general reliability issues, which J.D Power easily backs up, as do countless other previous Jeep owners, that now own other vehicles - owners that include a couple friends of mine who had nothing but issues with theirs.

Issues are to be had with any vehicle, an I knew you would try and throw "issues" in the mix. I have been(as I already stated) talking about major malfunctions not cracked headers past 90K, or power steering issues(with bigger tires). A bone stock jeep TJ(manual tranny) will average 250K NO PROBLEM. Again, so we dont get into nitpicking details as a last resort to a failed argument based on zero real world knowledge of the subject, we are talking about major reapairs(excess of 1k) and an average on the mileage.

The fact that I'm even arguing with somebody who obviously knows nothing about the topic is beyond me. This is last i have to say on the subject.

Mazilla out.

issues = reliability, which has been my stance from the get go. if you're going to get so touchy about your jeep, think twice about throwing out barbs on what vehicles you'll be willing to pull out...cause there's plenty of times when jeeps have had to be recovered.

haha, the same old argument. Jeep vs. FJ Cruiser or Land Cruisers. I have had a lot of Land Cruisers and will always be a cruiser owner. I do like Jeeps even though I have not owned one. I think my current vehicle was well equipped from the factory, lockers front/rear, center diff lock, full floating rear axle, coil over suspension, solid axle front/rear. All this in a big cushy platform and a big L on the grill.

I think that as long as you have a vehicle that you can carry what you need gear wise and you family and friends and get the hell out of dodge, that's all that matters.

here is me goofing off at Hollister Hills.

jon.

Yup Superstition is my favorite. Best of both worlds dunes and rockcrawling. And not as crowded as the others you listed but not sure you can shoot as those places? Could be wrong.

You know, I doubt you can shoot at those exact locations, but there has to be someplace out there we can shoot. I'll look into and post details as I find them.

No laughing! But IMHO MINIVAN! 1. They hold more stuff/people than most pickup trucks or SUV's 2. They get better gas mileage than SUV's . 3. they are large enough inside to sleep 3-4 people/children. 4. They tend to have cool features like the 12V outlets in the back for pumps and other plug ins.
5. They "blend in" to the crowd. No one expects the person in the minivan to be well armed and prepared.
