When I read this one I immediately thought about people that claim that the police are the ones creating the Us v Them attitude.

6. Most cops wonder why so many members of the community choose to pick up a mobile phone and record them while the officers are rolling in the dirt with an assailant rather than offering to help the officer.

That is acceptable. At least it has some coffee in it.
Policing just hasn't been the same since the demise of the 24 hour donut shop.

2. The vast majority cops have never shot anyone, but most cops can recite a detailed list of people who are/were deserving of being shot because they posed a deadly threat. This means that most cops have successfully defused a potentially deadly confrontation using only words and less-lethal weapons.

You aren't a cop are you?
I can think of at least 20 occasions where I would have been perfectly justified in shooting the person, but was instead able to resolve the situation without having to shoot the suspect. No cop that I know wants to shoot someone unless they absolutely have to.

That reminds me of a watch commander I had. Always talking negative about donuts and coffee but would have two or three 'healthy' muffins and a two liter of Diet Coke on his desk during graveyard shift. Worst lieutenant we ever had and we had some bad ones. Apparently when you reach 300 pounds you get to be a captain and after two years in a secluded office you get to retire.

All true for my agency except #5. The only time there are donuts is where there is a department training/briefing and even then most of them go untouched. There's a lot of "fitness guilt" in my department. The first officer to break the donut seal usually gets sh*t for a couple of days.

Saw another list a while back (Not a LEO)

Quote:
24 Things cops know, but most people don't

1.) Even though you say differently, you probably don’t know your rights.
2.) If you leave your teenager in charge of the house while you go away for the weekend, he or she will probably do something you forbade them to do. If they decide to host a beer party, your house will be wrecked.
3.) You can’t talk your way out of a ticket. Lots of people talk themselves into one.
4.) Of course it went off. What did you expect would happen when you pulled the trigger?
5.) The electronics in your radar or laser detector work no faster than those in my radar or LIDAR gun. By the time the little red light goes on, I already have your speed.
6.) We know you had more than two beers.
7.) If you grew up with guns in the house, you probably knew how to get to them, even though your parents thought they had them hidden or locked away. Don’t think your kids are any less ingenious.
8.) Arguing with me here will not go well for you. Arguments are for courtrooms, where you can make any statements and ask me any questions you want. Out here, I win all the arguments.
9.) We really don’t care how many FOP, State Sheriffs Association or 11-99 Foundation stickers you buy for your car. If you deserve the ticket, you’re getting it.
10.) Yes, you do pay my salary. Today’s obligation can be calculated by the following formula:
((Amount you pay annually in state, county, or city taxes/365) x (Fraction of budget allocated for law enforcement))/(Number of employees in my organization)

11.) I’d be happy to give you a refund. Do you have change for a penny?
12.) Most able-bodied people really can do those tests while sober.
13.) You are not the first person to see a cop and say "Take him, he did it," "I didn’t do it," or to tell your kid, "If you don’t behave, that cop will put you in jail." You probably aren’t even the first one to say that today. You have, however, caused me to mentally label you as a moron.
14.) The gun isn’t to protect you. It is to protect me.
15.) Your substance abuse problem is your business until it spills over into someone else’s life. Now, you are the problem.
16.) I don’t especially care what your race, religion, sexual preference, ethnicity, political affiliation or economic status is. I do have a bias against *******s.
17.) Can anyone here point out this person’s parents? He just asked me if I knew who his father was, and I don’t.
18.) Believe it or not, you really don’t drive better with a few drinks in you.
19.) Do unto others, but do it first.
20.) We are not armed, uniformed scribes. If someone has threatened, insulted, or otherwise vexed you in some non-criminal way and you want it put on record, write it down, take it to a notary public, and sign it in their presence. Poof, you have a record. If we could make one change to improve society, better parenting would be toward the top of the list.
21.) There probably are teenagers who can handle alcohol responsibly outside the direct supervision of an adult. We never run into them, though.
22.) Please press firmly, you are making four copies.
23.) You are in ______________. We don’t care how they do it in ___________.
24.) Yes, you very well may see me in court. I get paid overtime to be there, win or lose.

Is it true that an officer would appreciate help from a non-leo in a physical altercation?

Just because we get paid to fight sometimes doesn't mean we want to. Heck I still get that pit in my stomach when I know that no matter what I say or do, there's gonna be punches thrown.

If I was solo and had help from a bystander, I'd be more than thrilled. And surprised. And whoever it was, or if it were more than one, they'd be getting a dinner on me at the House of Prime Rib on Van Ness.

There is a young Deputy laying in a hospital bed in Long Beach. I'm quite certain he, his family, and co-workers, more than appreciate the assistance he recieved from an anonymous citizen in Lakewood a short time ago.

Just some humor relating to OP. That aside, where I live we have two or three deputies patrolling literally hundreds of miles, sometimes very remote areas. These men are genuine "good ol boys" and we are very protective of them. Everybody's armed and we let them know we have their backs. Of course thats the nature of living in a rural area where everybody knows each other. God protect the people that keep us safe!

I'm guessing that's because for decades now the police have telling the public: "Don't get involved, let the police handle it."

If you want the public to assist you at some point......your Dept. PR campaigns and press releases shouldn't be training people to NOT assist you.

Or people could apply the ol' common sense... but we all know how (un)common it really is

eta: While I have certainly read some statements from brass at various law enforcement agencies across the U.S., you really think in our litigious society that they could get up on stage at a press conference and say something like, "Anytime you see crime in progress, please, go get personally involved and try to apprehend the bad guys."

I was referring specifically to item I quoted from the article about assisting an officer who was struggling with a suspect. Not putting on a batman costume to go roam the streets of Gotham.

With the constant messages of: "The police will protect you" what's the average person supposed to think? They've been trained not to act, not to get involved and to let someone else do the dirty work. Kinda that whole "law of unintended consequences" thing yuh know.

I'm not sure if the article you were quoting appeared in your original post. I would argue that the "training" towards inaction has a whole lot more components than just law enforcement staff officers telling people to stand back and call 911.

I can understand that; but as has been stated here don't be afraid to ask if things look bad (usually, this would be solo/maybe two officers).

As an aside, just this past month we had a suspect bolt from one of our officers. There was a pretty long foot pursuit and the deputy wasn't able to close the gap on the suspect. Two citizens saw this, made a u-turn in their car and drove up to the suspect. They then tackled him and held him until backup arrived (which wasn't long; I was around the corner by time they tackled the bad guy). Once the suspect was secured we gave them a big thanks and sent them on their way (didn't need any of the suspect's friends swinging by and checking them out).

I must have worked in an area with unusually intelligent people. They figured out that all they had to say is "Officer, do you need help?".
