good luck, everyone is laying off. And those who are hiring are taking laterals over academy graduates... Why hire a new guy when you can get someone with years of experience? Man even CHP is getting more applicants than they know what to do with...

I don't think your going to have any luck asking on a forum go and put in as many applications as possible. HAve you checked out goverment jobs dot com. You can search by areas and type of job put in LE and it will show up. Most jobs are laterals right now :/.

Ahhh your near stockton, I'm right in stockton and most departments in our area are taking just laterals. You would probably have more luck towards the bay area.

Try to get in as a Level 1 reserve somewhere to keep your certification current and gain experience.

Go to www.governmentjobs.com and there are a few, and I mean FEW, agencies looking for laterals and academy grads. At least you have a POST. I don't and right now my chances are nil. It'll be interesting to see how many of these recent LE hires stay on once the economy turns around. Good luck to you.

Looks like Hayward PD his hiring academy grads.
https://www.calopps.org/default.cfm
From Lodi, it would be an hour+ commute, though...

Do a search on the site, there are some further out so you'll have to relocate.

Most cities, including mine us this site to promote their openings.

You might try doing Level 1 reserve until things pick up. If you do well, you will be at the top of the pile of applicants. We hire half our people from our reserve group.

You might want to try Watsonville PD. A friend of mine left my agency and went over there last month. Monterey PD and San Bernardino SO are hiring I believe. There isn't much opportunity out there at this time. The last academy graduation there was not one sponsored cadet. Completely unheard of. Good luck.

Same thing happened when I graduated the academy in 1994. I went back to school, got my B.S., and got hired by the Feds. Twelve years later the best thing I ever did.

If you're willing to travel...LAPD is still hiring, but the budget situation is a little tight right now and there's talk of suspending hiring in the near term.

They lose between 50 and 75 officers a month through normal attrition, so they run one academy class a month right now (60 per class) just to keep even...but again, the hiring might stop anytime.

If no one else has suggested try Calopps.org? I think

Thats where I got a TON of emails and outlets for jobs. Theres quite a few agencies that use them and it may help you out. I used them while I was looking and found a lot of opportunities.

Good luck man

Its tough out there but stay persistent and confident and you will find something

Yes they are hiring...just enough right now to keep up with attrition...the "laying off probationers" thing was just a suggestion 1 or 2 council members made that was quickly abandoned.

This could change at anytime, given the tenuous budget situation with the City right now, but as of right now, they are hiring.

This is accurate. I am going through the process right now.

The problem for the OP is the distance and the length of the hiring process (it will take about 9 months to go from initial app. to academy date).

Also, that POST cert. won't mean dick. Every LAPD officer goes through the LAPD academy, no matter what your experience is.

The LAPD Lateral Entry Program, Operation Blue to Blue, affords California POST Certificate Police Officers a chance to join the nation's finest law enforcement agency. Officers who have excelled in their law enforcement careers and are up to the task of meeting the high standards of the LAPD can now apply.

Lateral Entry Program Police Recruiting is available for candidates who have a valid California Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certificate and have successfully completed the probationary period at a California police agency. The starting salary range for Lateral Officers is $45,226-$80,074.80 and where you start within this range will be based on your law enforcement experience, military service, and education.

Lateral candidates must meet all of the requirements for a Police Officer and complete all test parts. The lateral program includes an abbreviated training and orientation program (Lateral Academy). Abbreviated training for lateral officers is typically only offered quarterly. The training is conducted in a manner that recognizes the lateral candidate's standing as an experienced California Peace Officer and not a new recruit.

For advanced step hiring, candidates with sworn Police Officer experience are advanced one salary level for every two years of completed service. Note: Military Law Enforcement experience and Reserve Police Officer service are not applicable.

For further information about POST Police Officer Recruitment and LAPD hiring call 213-473-9060.
