FYI our sheriff is amazing, a great guy to work for, and he's fighting with the BOS for better pay and benefits.

Salinas needs officers. Gilroy needs officers. Henderson in Nevada needs officers and Las Vegas Metro needs officers.

As an earlier poster said, you really need to dig deeper than just "getting another job" in the business.

Being terminated, did you have to surrender your 17 years invested paying into PERS? Were you forced to withdraw your contributions?

If so, realize that going to another agency, some of them do not contract to continue ("grandfather") someone in who was on 3@50. One of our agency's officers lateralled to a smaller agency in NoCal and found out the hard way. He was not grandfathered in and had to settle for the newer 2.7@57 plan. So at the end of his career it will be a wash as far as his monthly pension amount (higher pay at the new agency, but 10% less return for each year of service at retirement).

If you somehow DO still have your CALPERS account active and have 17 years of deposits invested to show for it, going to an agency that pays substantially less may impact your eventual payout. You may not be 50 yet and perhaps can not retire at this time, but say you did 10 more years at an agency paying 25% less than what you were making before. At the end of those 10 additional years your pension amount based on your pay might just barely be higher than if you had just "retired" right at 50 because the new agency pays substantially less, and with raises might just barely make it up to your old pay scale by the time you retire.

Definitely crunch the numbers.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. ..."

Just want to bump this thread. I had a unofficial "blemished" personnel file with my current agency and I was just hired at a different agency. It's possible to get hired somewhere else, you just have to prove yourself.

I didn’t lose my PERS when terminated, I will lose half if my wife continues with the divorce she filed for. I’m in backgrounds with two agencies and have failed one, possibly two interviews. After 12/31/19 I’ll have to recert POST. I’m still trying and won’t stop unless I fail 6 backgrounds, then I’ll know I’m likely out of the game.

OP. Hopefully you can land a position with someone. But if not not cash in your PERS. Hang with that until you get to 50? and then start drawing. At least it will be something for your time and effort.
May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I am
