Owls eating puppies is just wrong! I know some vineyards use owls and hawks as part of their pest control.

Default Change of Attitude

I live in Morgan Hill, CA on 17 acres. I have relocated no less than 25 rattlers over the years. In July 2015 I was bitten by a large Western Rattlesnake. I was walking three dogs. Two dogs were studying the snake when i approached. The third dog, a young male ran up as I was commanding the other dogs back. I blocked his forward momentum and (not smart) I received a severe venom injection on my right hand. Three days in ICU and 4 doses of anti venom later I'm fine. I leave snakes alone in the wild. On my property I now kill them with a shovel if they are out in the open during the day. It is too risky to handle them. I'd use a .410 or .20 gauge with buckshot. I don't see fire as a risk factor with a long barrel--at five feet or so.

Fine. Personally, I relocate. But if you have kids, grand kids, or stupid dogs that can't leave snakes alone, and don't have the knowledge on how to handle a venomous reptile yourself, you're better off shooting it unfortunately.

My nephews neighbor lost his Rott, from a Coral snake bite last week (just down the road from me). Dog was gone in less than 15 minutes. It wasn't a pretty death.

I relocate. I educate people on snakes.... I'm CERTAINLY no Hippie!

They taste "pretty good". They're stringy, and more full of bones, than fish. I like something that tastes more like "Shikkin'".

IMHO, Snakes (unless you get a Python, or Boa) are emergency food rations, or "Hard times" food only.

Definately not possible. You'd be in Burnet Co. Texas (where I live) for the rest of your life, then another 200 years, trying to kill the copperheads, and moccasins. Good luck.

Agree, out in the hills or a trail I let them be, on my property they die and go to Rattle Snake Heaven. I mainly get Gopher snakes on my property during the summer months. Those I give them some water, they drink and leave. I usually never see the same snake again.

Do some dog breeds naturally avoid and/or deal with rattle snakes safely? Same question regarding animals in general.
We have dogs that might not be snake trainable

Thanks

Not sure, but I have a GSD, I used water snakes to "snake train" her. She stands at a distance, and barks a high bark at a snake, but doesn't approach them.

Well, if a rattler comes on my property I kill it.
They are breeders and more would come next year if I didn't.
They do have their place in nature....but not on my property.

Anything that has a deadly bite....including Black Widow spiders, gets killed.

An air shotgun seems overkill if you would be just using it for rattlers.
A .22 revolver with CCI snake shot works great for me.
You can get a new Ruger Wrangler .22 revolver for $250.00 or less.
That is what I recommend.

Exclamation Water Snakes, the non-lethal kind

Doesn't the snake need a rattle?

Blanks and a section of a GI cleaning rod is all it takes. Wait until they’re nice and coiled up and it’ll go through every section. Just be sure you do not have a blank firing device attached to the muzzle when you do it.

Keep them safe through knowledge and self discovery. It's like firearm safety - you CANNOT be there 100% of the time, so you teach them what to do when in the vicinity of a gun and no adults around. Okay, now what to do when discovering a snake and no adults around to hold their hand, how to ID it, what to look for - how to avoid where, and why, snakes prefer certain types of location for hunting and sunning ... avoid accidental bites.

And I don't want to sound like a thread crapper - if you need to dispatch a rattlesnake, I understand - I really do. But ... just think about teaching the young, that's all.

Thank you for reading ... and the rattlesnakes thank you for respecting and relocating.
I approve this ^^^ post
