Default Looking for a starter 10m air pistol

I shot my first 10m air pistol match a couple of weekends ago and enjoyed myself enough to where I think I will continue in the sport. I am looking for recommendations on a entry level pistol that will not break the bank and will allow me to improve my skills before dropping a wad on a more expensive PCP. I have been recommended the IZH-46M but they are impossible to find and the ones I can find, I might as well drop the money on a Hammerli or Styer for a little bit more. Thanks for the input.

Mac

Look for an FWB 65. They are frequently available on some of the well known airgun websites. Youíll be lucky to find one for under $500, but unless you somehow damage it, you can always resell it and recoup your investment.

An FWB 65 will, if the shooter does his part, be on par with what most recreational 10M shooters can accomplish. Itís not a PCP, but before the world was inundated by precharged pneumatic airguns, the FWB 65 was used by Olympic shooters - itís recoiless action and build quality were, at the time, second to none.

Another option, though not as nice and/or ergonomic as the Feinwerkbau pistol, is the RWS (Diana) 6m. It, too, is a recoiless pistol, but it uses opposing pistons instead of the sledge system used by FWB. Personally, as much as I enjoy shooting the 6M, I find that the axis of the barrel sits a bit high for my tastes. I suppose I should mention that these pistols are no longer manufactured and are available only on the used market.

There are also a few cheaper options that will probably work well but have none of the cache of the German made pistols. Daisy, with its 777/747/717 series of single stroke pneumatic pistols, provided many with a cheap and accurate entrance into the 10 meter game. I had a 747 and it shot very well (if slightly underpowered) but I could never get used to the wet noodle plastic bolt they came with. Again, these are only available on the used market.

Speaking of SSP pistols, FAS has an offering with its 6004 series of pistols that may also work for you. I must admit, though, that Iíve never even held one let alone shot one. However, they do look like nice guns.

The thing to remember is that accuracy is expensive. You may start with a cheap option, but ultimately you will want to trade up. My advice would be to go with the most expensive pistol that you can afford. Youíll never regret it.

I would use what CMP uses:

Mac, if you are keen on the 46M, you can get them from here: https://www.krale.shop/en/baikal-mp-..._from_store=nl I have one from there, and it is super accurate. Shipping is less than $30 and delivery happens in 3 days.

Email Krale to ask if they have the 46M in stock. I got mine, despite it saying out of stock: info@krale-schietsport.nl

The P17 is surprisingly good and great value at $30. You can even buy one and use it until you figure out what "real" air pistol you want: https://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Beeman_P17/614

I second the Gateway to Airguns site for good info and advice.

Thank you for the tip, I sent them and email to see if they happen to have any in stock. The club that I joined has loaned me a 46M club gun and I have been practicing with it for the past month. It truly is a great AP but the grip was customized to the previous owner and although it is a close fit to my hand, it is not ideal. I hope Krale can come through for me as I would like to own my very own 46 and have the grip fitted to my hand. BTW, I shot my second match last Sunday using a borrowed Steyr LP10 and improved my score by 50 points but I still have a long way to go.

I took a rasp to my 46M grip immediately. It was way too tight for my hand.

I was tempted to make a simpler grip for it from plywood strips, so as not to risk destroying the stock one. Have not done that yet...
