Default Where can you shoot in public near SF?

I tried to figure this out a while ago, because I wanted to be able to shoot some place besides the range. Here are some of the reassembled fruits of my inquiries. Obviously, I might have missed something. Caveat Emptor.

Marin:

In theory, it looks like you can shoot so long as you aren't in a park or near a city or other human habitation. However, you can't shoot in

Parks

Land managed by the Department of Cultural Services,, whatever the hell that is. So, can't shoot at the historic Civic Center? The city art gallery? The farmer's market? Your guess is as good as ours.

land managed by the Open Space District. I have a feeling that this pretty much includes everything else not already covered, but I haven't checked.

Contra Costa:

You can't shoot in any "public place."

For some reason, I seem to remember having dug up some definition which implied that this didn't include "out in the middle of nowhere" but I may have confused this with the law for some other county. On the one hand, they separately prohibit shooting over water or from boats. On the other hand, in another chapter (relating to curfew for minors), they define a "public place" as "any place to which the public has access."

Alameda:

You can't shoot

in/on a road or highway

in a "public place."

However, they explicitly define "public place" as

Quote:
As used in this chapter, the phrase "public place" shall mean any public highway, road, street, sidewalk, lane, alley, open private grounds, or any structure open, other than through its doors, or windows, to public view from public or adjoining private property.
Which means shooting in the middle of nowhere is allowed.

I think Alameda was what I was thinking of in relation to the definition of "public place" in Contra Costa.

Santa Clara:

Can't shoot on country property.

Or the Matadero Creek Trails.

Or, weirdly, in unincorporated land entirely surrounded by a city (does this come up much?)

San Mateo:

You cannot shoot in unincorporated territory. Sad!

Buy a very large plot in the Boonies with a good backstop and your good to go.
Or have friends that have it.

LOL! So, shouldn't you should change title of your thread to "Where you can't shoot . . . in SF"?

I wonder where gang members & prohibited people test fire their guns? do they just drive out by the ocean and fire a few rounds to do a function check?

some areas cars park and walk down to fish from the shore, I think Ive found a few shell casings down there before.

Ooh, ooh, ooh ... I know. The park across the street from my house. We hear gunshots late a night.

I think a lot of gang members don't actually test fire their guns or practice or anything in the first place. Criminals in general aren't exactly tops in terms of conscientiousness, diligence, forward-lookingness, etc. I say we all try to spread rumors in prisons that modern autoloaders don't require lubrication.

they probably just drive down the hwy late at night and fire a few rounds out the window just to make sure it's functional.

Last time I tried that, some dork pulled over and started hassling me about it. You could tell he was a dork because he'd attached all these weird flashing lights to his car. Seriously, who the hell does that? It looked ridiculous.

If you're illegal, San Francisco juries say you can shoot on the Embarcadero.

And kill someone with the gun you stole from a law enforcement vehicle and then you can sue the city of San Francisco for racism if they arrest you.

I'm not sure this will work for me, given that I'm white, but maybe I just need a really good lawyer. Referrals welcome.
