Default Arisaka T38 Carbine

Forum needs more arisaka

-An often overlooked series of rifles, they are marginalized due to their association with Meiji and Showa Imperialist Japan.

Is that a receiver cover attached to the bolt? What is its function?

dust cover, it covers the bolt from dust

it's secondary function is to give away your position, by jingling as you work the action

Very nice!! I have a couple Arisaka carbines myself, but I doubt my photography skills are as nice. Maybe I'll take a shot at it later tonight.
The carbines are very pleasant and a lot of fun to shoot. Which arsenal made yours, Spiggy?

super collection you have there.

i predominantly collect k98s, but my late war interest brought me this late type 99. it's a Nagoya series 10 gun. matching, screws still staked. i like the rough features.

sometimes recievers were recycled, so you could have a totally different gun

since it's a series 10, it should be a transitional gun, but it may have been machined then held until parts were available, but by then was built as a last ditch.

Like my T38, it started as a long rifle but was recycled into a carbine, there's two sets of serials on it, the rearsenal marks on the shank is the correct one

If the screws are staked on that Series 10, don't mess with it!
Curiosity killed the cat and the value! Not many mummed and matching Last Ditch rifles out there and that one looks really nice.

Here's a bad photo of my carbines. From the top, a Nagoya 4th Series T38, a Mukden T38, an early T44 and a T99 "shorty". All mummed and matching, except a mismatched bolt on the T44.

nice pics guys.

spiggy got me interested, but i couldn't turn those screws.
certainly has mum. numbered parts are receiver, bolt body, extractor, and firing pin. triggerguard screws are staked and looked to have not been turned?

haven't fired it as don't have any JAP 7.7 ammo. have lots of 8mm mauser, but none for this one.

shame you're in NorCal, I have a few boxes of 7.7 and 6.5 that I had someone load using old japanese ammunition data

Deadly on honeydew, my first centerfire rifle was an arisaka, we (Sal and I) were using Hornandy loads and putting chunks of melon like 40ft in the air. Looking at the numbers, looks like they attempted to completely duplicate the ballistics on .303 British.

Edit!
-Sampachi, what kind of frog is that? is it leather?

oh and if you guys are interested in adding to your collection, I know a bunch of people with original uniforms, documents, ammunition, and other Imperial Japanese related articles.

Just avoid anything personalized or religious like letters, shrines, and flags; we've had a haunted battle flag float around until it found someone it liked

OK! One more photo

Kudos to the photographers, it was a fine picture -Your's Truly with the Type 89 mortar

Spiggy - The frog is made of canvas.

Smeg - There is a gent that sells good 7.7mm at the Cow Palace gun show. I also reload 6.5 and 7.7 if you are near the Peninsula.

Why is it that my pictures end up being an attachment and not displayed? What am I doing wrong?

host your photo before you post it, use the picture link; don't upload it to calguns and it'll show up.

try something like www.photobucket.com and you copy/paste the [img] link they give you

thanks for the ammo info gents.
Also if you upload to an outside host, you won't have the size restriction. So you can show better detailed pics.

Beautiful rifles! Amazing they survived in the condition that theyre in (at least the non-last ditch ones...) I've never fired an Arisaka, I think I saw on the history channel that the dustcovers were often removed, so good for you to have one intact.

Very nice collections...

I sold ( a long time ago) a T-99 with intact crysanthemum and good metal surface condition, but bubba'd wood. It shot well, and I wish I still had it...

Just a follow up... I'm considering taking a couple of Arisakas out this weekend to Los Altos Range. Might shot my last ditch 35th series to see how it goes.

Some arsenals will leave bits of kanji in or on the gun describing the marks and performance the gun exhibited during tests.

kind of like how the russians leave the slashed box or numbers on guns determining refurbish or factory accuracy

Post the story of it's capture at least! Or was it just acquired in Tokyo after the war or something? Intact mum?

He got the rifle from his brother who faught at Guadal canal, but I'm sure he got the rifle post war while stationed in Japan with his brother because the Mum is ground off. He also has a sweet sword he and I know nothing about, He got that in WW2 too.
