Default Browning BPR 17 HMR issue

Just went to the range today in Sunnyvale Rod and Gun and ran 17 hmr BPR and was getting 3-4" groups at 100 yards.

I was using a Nikon 3-7x32 on my Savage B17FV.

Out of 2 boxes (100 rounds) i ran, 8 of them had cracks at the head of the casing.

I've owned a Savage 93R17 and ran hornady 17gr exclusively and could get .8" groups at 100 yards.

Does anyone have any experience with savage's new B17 or this BPR ammo?

Sounds like the chamber may be a touch loose. I would send back to savage.
Ruger has the same issue with their 17 pistol. I would get cracked cases. Turns out it was the cylinder. Ruger has since stopped producing that pistol.

Oh wow, I think you're right. That might be it. I sent in a ticket through Savage. This would be my first time sending in a rifle. Are there any tips to make sure everything goes smoothly?

Most likely not the ammo as there are only a couple of makers of 17 even though there are more brands than actual manufacturers.

Make sure you get a return number from savage. You can pay a dealer to ship or through fed ex or UPS but you have to take it to a distribution center to ship/ Not a big deal if you have one close.

Oh okay. Probably will go through FFL to ship then. So frustrating. Stupid question but does Savage cover the shipping or is this all out of pocket back and forth?

I would ask Savage to send (or email) you a prepaid shipping label. I would recommend that you ship it, not a FFL. Your FFL would probably charge you to ship it.

When Savage fixes it, they can send it back to you (unless they need to replace the firearm), if you shipped it.

If the FFL ships it, then Savage has to ship it back to the FFL. That probably required you to DROS it ($ on you) and wait 10 days to pick it up. Ask your FFL about it.

I sent a CZ 452 .17 HMR Varmint back to CZ USA due to headspace issues - the base of a fired cartridge looked like a round-head screw. They sent a new rifle back directly to me. This was about 10 years ago, though.

What kind of box should i purchase to ship this?
Do I need to ship it with a lock?
Do I have to claim its a firearm when i bring it someone to ship?

Savage isn't really helping me with the process. They just sent an email and said "Yes we can take a look at it. Ship it to this location." I have a request number but it says resolved. They're taking about 1 week to respond to messages.

When I sent a Python back to Colt several years ago, and when I sent my CZ 452 back to CZ-USA, I used a plain brown box containing the firearm in a suitable container and lots of padding. I did not declare it as a firearm, but as machine parts for repair. I insured them for a suitable amount and shipped next day or second day air, signature required. Neither addressee name had firearms in its name. Colt was some abbreviation.

Okay, cool I gotta find a long box then. This sucks never figured it would cost the buyer so much out of pocket just to ship a defective gun back. Feel cheated but oh well gotta do what yah gotta do! Thanks for everyone's help.

I'd be surprised if Savage foots you with the shipping bill. Shipping was paid for by the factory for everything I've had to send back. If you don't have a box, ask them for one. They will probably send it to you no charge.

Split case neck could be a out of spec (loose) chamber, but I'd try some different ammo in it first. Bad batch of ammo is not unheard of. 8/100 smells like ammo problem to me.

My CZ 17hmr is trouble free and 1/2"@100yds is normal with Hornady ammo. CCI TNT wasn't as good. That could be the accuracy difference for the OP.

Good luck mailing a firearm without an FFL. I had an issue with a Browning 1911-22 pistol and only way I was able to get it shipped back for service repair was through an FFL. If its a warranty claim, then they should take care of all the shipping and repair costs. You'll have to sign temporary possession back to the FFL giving them liability should something happen.

When I tried shipping mine both the post office and UPS store the clerks got all wide eyed and standoffish when told it was a firearm getting shipped back for repair. When you declare more than $100 in value for shipping insurance they always ask whats in it.

save the hassle, take it to your local FFL, they'll be able to help you.

Skeeter makes a good point. Pay the FFL.

*With the new ammo restriction can anybody exchange bad ammo for new without the hassel of new back checks and money paid out? Another dot gov required pain in the balls.

Save the hassle and ship it yourself. Through the years, I’ve shipped a number of firearms to different manufacturers. Never once did I ever encounter a problem. Most will cover the cost of shipping and some will even provide something to ship it in.

If you’re shipping a rifle, and you are, you need only take it to the USPS. They’ll ship it without blinking an eye. If you have to send off a handgun, you’ll have to go to one of the major shippers’ hubs. This is because both UPS and FEDEX require you to pay for overnight air. Note that this is not a federal or state law, it’s a policy generated by these companies because they are so heavily infiltrated with thieves that they do not wish to be responsible for the acts of their own employees.

Having an FFL send off your rifle for you will only generate needless complexity and cost.

Do it yourself, it’s a piece of cake.

Oh okay so it might not be the gun maybe just the ammo? I'll try some hornady first then and see what happens. I have a few 17hmr rifles i can test with as well and narrow down the cause first before I send it in. Was looking forward to using it for jackrabbits this summer but guess that's not happening. I really hope its the ammo.

I've been sending them emails but they never respond back. They require me to open up a ticket for the to respond. Love savage rifles but this experience with their CS makes me think twice about buying from savage again.

One thing i do remember was that sometimes had a hard time fully engaging the bolt. I think it might have been when loading in the ones that cracked. Didn't think it was related until now.
