old Stinger 22LR ammo from Gemco
I was going through some of my ammo and found a few boxes of this stuff.
Some folks will remember a department store named Gemco that went out of business in the mid eighties. Its 50 rounds CCI Stinger 22lr for $1.89 old school |

And 4% sales tax, if that...

I remember them well. I bought my Rem Varmit 223 rifle with scope rings/reloading dies/brass/bullets for $225 and a Leupold 3X9X40 scope for $100 from them. I still have some primers with the $.89 price tag on them somewhere. Still have some 22 Stinger ammo also.

Gemco wow! Wasn't old enough to buy ammo from them, but I'm sure I bugged my dad for a few GI Joe's while we were in there - there and Fedco, when we weren't at Zody's "Buck-o-Rama's".
Thanks for that! |

I have a red box of Federal Hi-Power that has a sticker on it from All American warehouses that's lists the price as $0.77. I paid $3 for at the Ventura gun show, the guy who I bought it from thinks he bought it in the 70's.

I remember going through boxes and crates with my older brother during their going out of business sale at Gemco. It is now Target in Vallejo. I remember when Vallejo had a Sears & Roebucks and a Show Biz (Chuckie Cheese variant) back in the day. Oh the good ole' days. ....Ok now I feel really old.

Gemco!
I was just a kid but my mom shopped there all the time. Certain things I remember her getting there was an RCA TV and VCR with a remote to operate both which at the time was not common. That VCR could do all kinds of editing. I was bummed when it died about 13 years later. They also had the coolest cap guns. I don't remember the brand but they had plastic cap chains which were fed into magazines which fit into the weapon it came with. The handgun style even had a recoil and ejection. We had many many simulated wars/fights/etc since a lot of the kids in the neighborhood all had those capguns. End of threadhijack.

Hahahaha, I remember Gemco.
I remember getting chased out of there when I was about 12. My buddy and I would go into the stereo section. They had record player stereos there....with records on them so you could sample the sound. Once they had a Led Zepplin or Black Sabbath LP on one. So we would put the LP up high on the spindle....with the arm thingie across it......set the volume all the way up...and hit the switch and walk away. That gave you about 10 seconds head start before the LP would drop.......the needle would swing over, drop down on the LP and start playing. At full volume. We thought it was the funniest thing ever. Of course you'd hear the needle scraaatch off about 10-15 seconds later after an employee had run over...about the 3 time they caught on to us and escorted us out. Good times. |

Bought a 10/22 at Gemco in Signal Hill for $65. Still have it. Used to spend a lot of time at Andrews Sporting Goods which was down the street on Long Beach Blvd IIRC.

I bought my wedding ring at Gemco when they were going out of business. That was nearly 28 years ago.

Hahaha! I was in middle school around the Gemco days. I remember going every Friday with my mom. She would grocery shop while I roamed the toy section.

Havent heard "Gemco" mentioned for a LONG time. It reminds me of two things; elementary school and my first computer, a Commodore 64.
I did a ammo inventory recently and came across a brick of .22 Rem. with a Big 5 sale price tag of $9.99. |

I remember as a kid when my local Gemco went out of business. They had all ammo on sale for 30-50% off. My dad took me down and we bought all the 12 and 20 gauge they had.
I still have some of it left. Today that place is a Best Buy. Ironic that I didn't even know what a computer was at that time. |

I remember Gemco fondly. They had everything a kid could want in Simi Valley in the late 70s and early 80s. Food, stereo stuff, firearms and household goods.
I bought my first gun, a Ruger 10/22 at the local Gemco. I think I was 19 then and I'm 50 now and the Ruger still shoots well, but I have had to replace a couple of springs over the years There's a Vons in that building today, two face lifts later, and I still shop there occasionally. |

WOW, Gemco...that brings back old memories. The one here in Riverside turned into Target. I used to love to walk through the little sporting goods section, stare at the fishing and shooting stuff back before I ever even held a BB gun.

Yep, it seems like I spent half my young life in the Simi store.

We used to buy TONS of ammo from FedMart, Gemco and ALL the hardware stores in those days. Even some of the drug stores had .22 ammo.

Bought my first gun at Zody's - still got it. Bought a shotgun from Montgomery Ward - still got it. Miss the days of department stores offering everything under the sun. One stop shopping that now takes an entire mall to cover.
