I was surprised that this thread is over 600 days old, but I enjoyed the imagination and creativity regardless.
I've always admired H&K and photographed this the day I bought it home from the FFL. Last edited by SoftHeart; 09-15-2021 at 10:04 AM.. |

With my phone. Automatic settings. Firearm on the floor, paying attention to contrasting background.
Why people photo/video black guns with a dark background I'll never understand. (Same AR, inside & outside CA) Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk |

you dont really need much to get a clean photo of anything really, i like using the sun, block the sun with a white cloth to dampen the light, and the only other thing you will need is a big white sheet of board to place object on. the rest is playing with settings of your camera, in my case i use my iphone 5s, point and click, i will however use photoshop to clean the edges and play with tone and lighting

This is the Versa Max being held up by my steel toed Wolverines, which served me well during my refinery days.
The inside joke of the image is that everything in it will give you a kick. The Versa Max and Boots are sitting on a glass table where I illuminated the boots from underneath to give them a glow. |

One-shot using an indirect light to bring out the slide engraving and using a low ISO with a slow shutter speed and a steady tripod.
Glock -1-4.jpg And one using full sun where I dropped all but the accent color. BLM2-1-11-1.jpg |

I enjoyed learning how to do this after looking through the many great shots.
My first image post was easy with your good instructions. This is a Unique Relic. I linked to the pic at the free "postimages.org". Quick effort with smartphone, black board, and an OTT-LITE. I used the phone photo app to crop and remove some color from the old yellowed grip. Then "Picture Perfect" app to cover a bright spot in the background. Next time I'll start with a very sharp image. I'm hoping I can update the image with one that is more clear someday. Many thanks. Last edited by Tedd; 04-11-2021 at 5:26 PM.. Reason: correct errors |

Here are different versions of the same gun, one w/a white background, and w/a dark one. These 2 images feature specular highlighting.
Start experimenting w/what are called "specular highlights" which is just a fancy word for throwing light from the side/top/bottom of an object/at an angle, that creates detail in that object. Again, specular highlighting comes at an angle, and not from the direction of the camera. Don't get frustrated and quit if the first few tries don't work, photography rewards those who keep at it. Nobody gets a masterpiece on their 1st try, keep at it. Last edited by SoftHeart; 04-27-2021 at 8:17 AM.. |

Good to see that everyone stopped using Photobucket.
funny how you can store your pics on your computer in teh My Pictures area. I only have about 2000 pics stored on mine. works real well adn no problem with Photobucket stealing your pics and holding them for ransom! Randy

I always find photographing long guns, especially long long guns, more challenging than pistols. You need more room, bigger backgrounds and more lights to light longer objects.
The other challenge is art direction. So many of the best gun photographers are also incredible art directors and always find all of the coolest accessories, ammo, cases, etc. to photograph with the gun. Since I have a lot of C&R guns, it can be challenging to invest the time and money into acquiring nice items for good art direction. For photographing the Shield, I went to Lowes and actually bought some sample tiles from their flooring department to find this one. I have a pile of others but some of them just don't work well for guns even though they look cool. Also, a tip for overhead views of handguns, float the handgun above the surface using some Legos or whatever you have laying around that the can support floating the gun an inch or two above the background. Even on white, it let's you play with the edge shadow and makes the gun pop out from the BG more.

Thank you. It's a work in progress. I've been studying the work of Firearms News photographer Mike Anschuetz and I have a long way to go to get anywhere near his level. But I keep working on it, experimenting and learning.
Mike's recent shot from the last issue Art direction is the hardest part of it. Lighting too but I'm a cinematographer so at least I know how to light.

Yep, he's shot all of their covers for years. Each month when it arrives, I always take a long 20 minute look at the cover and try to figure out how he shot it and what kind of composition and art direction he used.
