Updated timeline is below. 13 months and 7 days total.

...snipped...

Congrats...

8500-ish is a safe number.

ETA: There was an article posted here recently that said there were 8300 issued to date.

Interview today, was the same date & time as when I received my original email response.

2015.12.15 Requested appointment
2015.12.15 Received response (Appointment scheduled for 2016.04.20)
2016.03.20 Took CCW class and Livescan per recommendations from other permit holders. Went to OCFA / OCSES, happy with the experience.
2016.04.20 Initial interview, investigator seemed pleased that I had the CCW training class and Livescan completed already, kept copies of the cert and livescan. Food for thought...
2016.05.03 Dropped off additional hard copies of supporting documentation at the Sheriff's office.

Will update with further developments.

Here's my progress so far:

12/19/2015 - Appointment Request
4/28/2016 - Initial Interview Appointment
5/12/2016 - A nice deputy visited my home. Verified my residence.
5/17/2016 - Completed my fingerprinting.

Thought it was kind of strange that the deputy came by before I initiated my live scan. Did anyone have a similar experience?

I guess I'm going through the most lengthy part of this whole process... Waiting for the live scan to go through.

/\ The deputy came by as a result of your interview, not your LiveScan. Ideally you should have done your LiveScan a couple of months ago. What you should now is get your training done.

Yes. I completed my Interview on a Friday and that same weekend on a Saturday a Sheriff came and did a residency check.

Yes... the longest part is waiting for the live scan to come back. Then you have to wait for the approval process by the Captain to continue for your Cert or if you have done your Cert, you'll get an email for a pickup date.

Good Luck

Update...

Heard back in Late May that my DOJ/FBI Live Scan showed up for them.

It was then placed on the Captains desk for approval.

Called last week and was told that I was approved by admin and I now will be hearing back from the appointment department to schedule my pick up.

They mentioned that they are going through a staff change and that it would be a couple weeks before I heard anything about a pickup appointment.

So well wait some more.

That's probably what's holding up my renewal too. Glad I turned in the paperwork 3 months early!

Curious about the renewal. I'm about to start my renewal process. Are they accepting the reason that was used on the original application 18 month ago when the county had basically a "shall issue" policy?

Thanks

No they're not. If you read the few OC threads you'll see you need more than "self defense" now.

Total time from appointment to pick up (minus months of delay on my end) is 11 months.

I can't say enough great stuff about the staff at OCSD. They were friendly, helpful, professional, and courteous. All in all, a very positive experience.

I’m not sure if they spoke to any of my neighbors, but I haven’t received any strange looks like why is a Sherriff at my door asking about you.
9/14/16 – Submitted additional data per Sheriff Officer’s request.
9/17/16 – Email received from Sherriff that performed interview that he was forwarding my file to the Lieutenant for “good cause” review. He said it would be a “few weeks” before I hear back.

9/29/16 - received email from OCSD, that I was preliminarily approved pending my live scan results

On a side note, thank you to Greg Block. He has been very helpful, including helping me articulate an appropriate good cause statement.

Posted in county specific forum and came across this thread.

Hey Folks, just a quick timeline post for my newly issued permit:

1/7/16 - Appointment Request
5/11/16 - Interview
5/25/16 - DOJ Print Submission
6/11 & 12 - CCW Training @ Artemis in Lake Forest (HIGHLY RECOMMEND)
7/5/16 - Conditional Approval Received
11/22/16 - Final Appointment/Permit Issued

DOJ took FOREVER!

Very thankful that OCSD is willing to issue permits. The deputy that interviewed me gave some good feedback to help me better articulate my good cause and when I attended the training @ Artemis in Lake Forest the deputies that work there part time or were retired were amazing and gave some insight as to how receptive OCSD was of CCW permit holders.

Agree with Agentmoby that DOJ takes forever (almost five months in my case). I would recommend having Livescan done the same week as your original appointment request to avoid the waiting game.

CCW now expired. Last update received on January 24th stating application is still under review and it's taking on average of 3-4 months to process.

Get them in early.

12-18-16 – Mailed in Renewal Paperwork without "Good Cause" supporting paperwork.

12-21-16 - Dropped off requested "Good Cause" supporting paperwork, per Sheriff - Background Investagator.

12-27-16 - Firearms Training 4 hour Course - Self Defense Firearms Training.

1-13-17 - Letter of Conditional Approval.

2-13-17 - Emailed CCW Unit, inquiring when my pick up appointment.

2-17-17 - Emailed CCW Unit, inquiring when my pick up appointment.

2-17-17 - Called CCW Unit, inquiring when my pick up appointment.

2-21-17 - Received email from OCSD CCW Unit, scheduled for appointment.

3-1-17 - Final Appointment, Picked up card!

72 days, from renewal start to pick up card.

My thoughts to other renewal applicants… Submit organized and complete paperwork. Be persistent, follow up with frequent phone calls (every 3 weeks) to assure your file is on track to meet your expiration date.

Thank you to Mr. Greg Block. Greg was very helpful, assisting in the articulation of my good cause statement.

10/19/2016 Submitted renewal
01/19/2017 Sheriff informed me that paperwork was incomplete
01/22/2017 Submitted missing documents
01/29/2017 Completed required training
03/01/2017 Received notice to pick up permit next week

So almost 5 month. I thought my package was complete but it wasn't. So it is very important to double check everything and be very detailed with the good cause statement.

Orange County CCW Victory

Timeline
8/15/16 Requested an Interview date (2/23/17 was the date)
11/6/16 Training and Live scan
2/23/17 Interview
3/6/17 Residency Check
4/5/17 Email for appointment to pick up CCW
Pick up Date is 4/13/17!!!
8 month process. I feel that I saved myself some time by having all of my training and live scan completed prior to my interview.

The only hiccup was they (OCSD) contacted me a few days ago and told me one of my three guns that was on my application was not registered to me. WTF. Not stolen just not registered to me. This was a gun that I bought (used) at the OC gun show about 10 years ago. And for the life of me I can’t remember where the heck I had the gun DROS’d at. I think it was a gun shop in La Mirada or Whitter?? Anyone remember some small shops that have closed in that area. And of course I can’t find any paperwork. So any suggestions on how to fix that please let me know.

But they just dropped that gun from my app and kept the other two on. All things considering I’m stoked to have earned the privilege to carry in CA.

Thumbs up

04/04/16 - Completed online application.
04/05/16 - Received initial interview for 08/05/16
08/05/16 - Initial interview completed. Told to proceed to Live Scan and Training.
08/08/16 - Residency check, wasn't home but spoke to neighbors. Never came around a second time.
12/05/16 - Emailed OCSD to check back in regarding status as instructed during initial interview. Told I was approved and just waiting on DOJ paperwork from Live Scan.
01/03/17 - Received conditional approval email. Told to proceed with training.
01/29/17 - Completed CCW training course.
01/30/17 - Emailed Training Certificate and received confirmation of receipt from OCSD.
02/28/17 - Contacted OCSD to check progress of application. Told was approved and wating on scheduling for final appointment.
03/30/17 - Received conditional approval email a second time and asked to resend Training Certificate again. Complied with instructions.
04/20/17 - Recieved Final Appointment confirmation email (04/25/17).
04/25/17 - Final appointment and picked up permit.

It took a little over 12 months but I'm not complaining. Never thought I would be able to obtain a CCW permit moving back to California. I lived in Colorado and obtained a permit there and was a little sad to lose it but I've been made whole again .

The same exact thing happened to me when I applied for the initial permit back in 2015. I sent 'Automated Firearms System (AFS) Request for Firearm Records' to the CA DOJ. Follow the instructions on the form. (It has to be notarized) Got back a list of firearms I own. Sent that to the OCSD. They said they reran the check, and the firearm was indeed registered to me. They had no explanation of why it did not show up originally. (They probably entered the wrong Serial Number.)

P.S. As I think about it more, I remember the Notary saying that the notary rules had changed, and she could not notarized the form from the DOJ. But she had another form that she attached to the DOJ form and that all worked fine.

Anyway good luck.

My timeline:

11/26/16 - Sent renewal application
11/28/16 - Received acknowledgement of application
2/1/17 - Sent request to insure application was in process
2/2/17 - Received reply, application is in process
3/3/17 - Original license expired
3/27/17 - Received request to submit documentation of good cause
3/29/17 - Sent requested documentation
4/11/17 - Received 'conditional approval for further processing'
4/11/17 - Attended renewal training class
4/12/17 - Faxed training certificate
4/14/17 - Received appointment date
4/20/17 - Renewal permit in hand

Unfortunately, it's a privilege when it should be a right.
