Interim chiefs aren't know to do much except hold the course, especially if they want the permanent job.

Similarly, citizens in Covina can point just a few miles east, south east and south to San Berdoo, Riverside and Orange counties: they all readily issue CCWs right now and have for awhile.

Pretty much this. We've asked Mike Spence about ccw issuance with this interim chief but so far it's in a holding pattern...

Contemplating a move to WC (or neighboring cities) for several reasons but this might be incentive that pushes me over the edge to actually make it happen, if it ever comes to fruition.

I'm looking at timeframe of years so as usual, let's just wait and wait and wait and see...

Bell is a good guy he will hold the rudder straight, I heard he is not in the running for the permanent position. whomever they hire if they are a puppet will bend to the wishes of the city council.

BTW I heard the city manager freland owns some guns.

Isn't that what we want since the city council voted for good cause?

Anyone have an idea of what this will mean regarding CCW?

So come Oct 10th, we should check to see if there's a change on the WCPD website. It currently has under the "About" pulldown menu:

It is the position of the West Covina Police Department to have all CCW license application processed through the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. For information regarding the application process contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by visiting their website at www.LASD.org.

Since a CoP has a lot more than issuing CCWs on his plate, I guess it would be worthwhile checking the WCPD website at the beginning of every month to look for any changes. https://www.wcpd.org/

Plus, the new CoP may make a public statement about CCWs (speech, news release, or during an interview) that locals should watch out for.

I have many reasons to potentially move to WC. If CCWs are back on the menu, that might be the tipping point for me.

Less than ...

Anyone corner the new chief-to-be yet to find out his position on the GC requirement?

Can you go to another county to get a CCW? I live in San Diego, seems stupid restrictive. Can I go to an area that isn’t so restrictive?

You can only get it from your county of residence if you want it statewide. If you can get it from your county of employment (if you work outside your county of residence), then it's only good for that county and only related to employment, such as hours and purpose of carry.

I got a response from the PD to my comment:

Quote:
Good morning,

I am not sure what his stance will be since he has not started yet. You are more than welcome to inquire at a City Council meeting.
So when is the next City Council meeting?

No, you have to be a resident of the county you apply for, in order to obtain a CCW in said county.

Dude, there's a LOT going on in SD Co., thanks to SDCGO PAC!

They're fighting to get some chiefs in SD Co cities to issue CCWs:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1172570

They're also involved with interviewing sheriff candidates who will be running for sheriff next year to support pro-CCW candidates:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1340431

If you really want a CCW you'll have to fight for one in SD Co.

If neither of those pan out, you can always move just inside the border of an issuing county and have a longer (armed) commute.

Ok so I just saw this now....and I'm too excited to actually read through everything. But from what I skimmed...our chances of getting CCW is good on Oct 10? I live in Wesco. I never thought I could get the chance to actually get a good chance of getting CCW. Damn I hate begging for my 2A right.

Keep in mind, this can be a double edged sword.

Like Murrieta in Riverside Co, WesCo could start to issue, but the price could be stupid expensive. Murrieta costs ~$750+ and is revenue neutral for the city. They also require a Psych exam ($150 of the ~$750). You might get them, but they might be expensive.

Personally, I really hope this isn't the case for WesCo, so I'll be watching and hoping you guys can get it going.

I'm at UCLA today and planned to head over to WCPD tomorrow to ask the Chief in person. I wanted to face him when I ask. I'll let you know what happens. Yes, I will be polite, professional and well groomed... but firm about the council vote...

It's encouraging. Nice to hear we might have a grounded chief and not just a political appointe. (Beck)

Default CCW in West Covina

Our new police chief Marc Taylor will be sworn in on 10/16 at 10 am . I believe it is at city hall. A good time and place to meet him.

Yes, that would be a better time and with a group; even small, it would make a greater impact. Then I would ask any Calgunner who lives in WC meet up at 9:30 in the library parking lot. Wear proper clothing if you can. We should be polite but firm in our resolve.

I don't think that's the right time or place for it. That will be a time of ceremony and celebration for the new chief and his family and best not to sour it/hijack it with a potential conflict over CCW policy....

I think setting an appointment with the chief and perhaps a city council member who supports the PD issuing CCWs with "self-defense" as sufficient Good Cause would be better.

Having said that, I think a powerful pro-CCW impact on the chief can be made at the ceremony by having as many of your pro-CCW group's members show up as possible (as you said, in suitable attire), introduce themselves and their spouse and children (if they have them), welcome and congratulate the new chief and say, in a friendly manner, something like "I hope you will enable me to protect my family in public by issuing CCWs for 'self-defense'" and leave it at that. He gets to see you, see you're not nut cases, but just ordinary, law-abiding folk who want to protect themselves. Of course, if he wants to discuss it then and there, that's up to him. But be sure to remain friendly, even if he disagrees.

Do not do anything that would appear to be a confrontation re CCWs: leave that for your private meeting or when the new chief appears before the city council, assuming he is against WCPD issuing CCWs again or against SD = GC.

JMO

That was my internet as well. As you wrote, not the time or place for "demonstrations" but an introduction to our group who live in the city..

(1) Don't forget you still have to make sure pro-CCW council members get reelected (June? Nov?), and antis get replaced. (Mayor too?)

(2) IIRC, the city council ultimately controls the "purse strings" (city's budget, thus the PD's). They may also have to sign off on the chief's employment contract. Find all of that out and remind the new chief, if and when necessary and appropriate.

(3) I've seen little old ladies like RBGinsberg hunched over like Yoda keep going, like the Everready bunny, for years.... Don't count on getting a CCW because of SCOTUS anytime soon. Dems and RINOs will probably stop national reciprocity until we win a couple more elections.

Needless to say, we won't be getting any relief from Sacramento either.

Californians need to use local political action, like you guys and the San Diego folk, to get CCW reform/liberalization.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I live on the very edge of L.A. County, so I know San Bernardino county is out of the question. But I'm about 10 minutes from West Covina, could I seek a CCW permit (assuming it's a go, obviously) from them if I don't live in the city?

Thanks for not pointing and laughing at the n00b question.

No. Chiefs can only issue to residents of their city.

Bump as a reminder.

Anyone who attends, be sure to let us know how it goes, and esp if you have a chance to meet your new CoP.

So issuing CCWs isn't a "very high priority".

I'll check again between Christmas and New Year's Day: he will have been in office for over 2 1/2 months by then. If nothing new, it shows that issuing CCWs isn't a "high priority."

Then I'll check again in June. If nothing then, issuing CCWs isn't a priority at all and he's probably not going to change WCPD's anti CCW position and issue for SD = GC.
