OCSD Pistol Range
Any civilians on here who shoot at (in) the OC Sheriff's pistol range? Is it a good place to shoot?
Their web site says "The department maintains a public pistol range..." but I don't think I have ever met a civilian who has visited it. Anyone have any experience with it? I would have to guess that at a minimum it would probably be pretty well supervised and you probably are not going to get any of the newbs that roll in off the street wanting to rent a gun (as we get at the local indoor ranges). Also what is the rule about CCW there? I would assume that given it is a sheriff facility, CCW would not be permitted. Thanks for any info. |

It's a superb range that says "public" on the sign, but in reality has so many restrictions on "civilians" that it's not really worth your time to go. No long guns of any kind, no magnum handguns, and no smiling faces or happy people. You are treated as if you are being done a favor when you go there to shoot in the range that you help pay to maintain.

From Yelp:
This a great little gem of a gun range in North OC. It's a partially indoor/ outdoor 60ft range run by the OC Sheriff Dept. It's only $7 for your first 2 hours and $2 more for each additional hour or $10 a day. They only take cash or check and do not offer change. Bring your own gun with they only allow pistoles or revolvers. There is a store next door which sells ammo if you need some. You have to meet with the RO before you are allowed to use the range and show competency with your gun. One main rule of the range is that you are only allowed to shoot magazines with no more than 5 rounds loaded. And no rapid fire. Also you need to clean up your own brass which is not a big deal since they offer brooms and dustpans to dispose in red buckets. You can also collect your shells which is great if you plan to resell your brass. Also there are convicts there that are from the local jail to clean and maintain the range. Don't be alarmed and don't have any interaction with them. Over all this a great place with some really cool people that work there. Since it's a Sheriffs Range you don't run into the random idiots like you do at other places. For the price this place can't be beat! Sounds like it's worth checking out. Thanks for the feedback. Doesn't sound too bad. I am not uncomfortable around LEOs and frankly if a range is actively supervised by a range safety officer I say that's all the better. Happy to let him look at my firearms and if they require shooters to demonstrate any proficiency well that just weeds out those who may need more training. As far as only loading 5 or 6, I sometimes do that anyway. It just makes me slow down my rate of fire and try to shoot better. And the cost is reasonable. So I think you convinced me I should give it a try sometime. If nothing else its a new place to try and you never know what you might learn or whom you might meet when you try a new place. I will have to call and find out what is the CCW policy.

My actually my favourite pistol range in OC. You'll probably bump into me on a sat afternoon about 3 pm.
Once you're a regular they'll wave u in. I only had my guns inspected one time. That's when they explain the rules to you. Reason why I like the place: - less crowded - no noobs - rapid fire and mag changes tolerated to a certain degree (Leo trains that way as well) - super friendly staff once u know them - free brass lying around - I normally hang side by side targets and do target transition drills - $7 - above experience may vary, the deputies there typically recognize me and usually know I'm a safe shooter |

It was inevitable. I wonder how this decision was made and why it took so long and if there was any public input? I haven't shot there in a long time but I don't like it. I guess the cops and their minions there can go back to shooting themselves by accident. Will they refund the people that bought annual passes?

My opinion is that this is what happens when government agencies get the funding they really desire.
They shut the public out after they have some of the helicopters and thermal sensors and ... you name it they want to make us "safe". I'm not bashing LE here, I just believe this is the route government takes when they have "too much" public funding. |

I took another look at how to get to the comments links. This should work:
Use this link to send comments to Sheriff Hutchens: http://ocsd.org/contact (Upper right side of page, click the “Email” link) Repeat the process here to send comments to the Board of Supervisors: http://ocgov.com/gov/bos/ Here is what I sent to the Sheriff: Dear Sheriff Hutchens: I am a resident of Orange County and a frequent user of your public pistol range. I respectfully request that you reconsider your decision to close the range to the public as of January 1, 2016. I believe the Sheriff's public range is a positive program for a number of reasons: (1) it provides citizens with a safe and economical way to maintain safe gun-handling skills (2) citizen usage fees generate revenue to support the maintenance and operation of the range for LEO's and citizens alike, thereby reducing taxpayer burden for all, and (3) it allows citizens to interact with law enforcement personnel in a positive way, thereby fostering greater appreciation and respect between both groups. The U.S. Constitution guarantees law-abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms and I (assume) that members of your department have taken an oath to protect that right by upholding the Constitution: Keeping the range open to the public demonstrates that OCSD cares about citizen safety, and is committed to upholding the constitution for all citizens. Respectfully, XXX XXXXX |

OCSD Response
FYI, here's the response from OCSD:
"When the range agreement was reached in 1962 the Department as well as the county was much smaller. Our recruit classes as well as other training classes routinely have to be taught at night do to a lack of space when the public range is open. As an experienced shooter, you are also aware of the need for law enforcement to incorporate movement, barricades, multiple targets, etc. into their training. This can not be accomplished while running a static firing line such as on the public range. This was a difficult decision and not taken lightly due to the many great relationships formed over the years between the public and our range staff, unfortunately, the training needs, time and space limitations and safety concerns ultimately led to the decision for the closure. Thank you for your input and have a great day." |

I was there last Saturday and saw the notice as well. Definitely left the range that day sad. I'll do my part and send in my comments and hopefully the board can help intervene to keep it open to the public.
It's a good range and one of the very few public ranges around. |

oc sheriff range
I sent a letter, old school typed, in the mail, to Hutchens. no response as of yet. Anyone hear anything back on possibility of reopening to public?
btw The reason they gave of "they needed the space" is so lame. I had been going there for years thur and friday mornings, and there were always many lanes open- 5 lanes for public, anmd the rest "reserved lanes" for leo were also under utilized. That was right through december 2015. |
