I haven't found the safety to be an issue, anytime I took it to the range, but if I had a newer Single Six with fiber optic sights for $200 ( I got my RR with fiber optics on sale, $175 I think it was) I'd be shootin it!

In my experience, 22 mag, when fired from a rifle is outstanding. The feel, sound, and power at range 100-125m makes it my favorite plinking cartridge. It’s a mini high power round that everyone enjoys shooting.
In a pistol however, the velocity benefits of the little magnum are are mostly negated due to the short barrel length. In such use, it will be very loud and spit quite a flare. A fine characteristic for any defensive firearm! Last edited by Fat Old Mopdog; 10-19-2019 at 3:25 PM.. Reason: Clarity

On the subject of dry firing. I am of the idea that this is generally bad practice as the energy of the pin has nowhere to dissipate aside from the structure in which it is housed, possibly resulting in metal fatigue. Doubly so with rimfire as the pin may result in damage to the edge of the breech face. There are varying opinions on the matter.
I’m no expert, just going on past training and observation. I would like to hear from others with more experience. Last edited by Fat Old Mopdog; 10-22-2019 at 4:18 PM..

I will include my praise for the Ruger's of which I own (2). I have temporary custody of my father's old blued (3) screw model (with out the factory "fix") and I have the very first pistol I ever purchased a SS version of the same.
Both guns have had the snot shot out of them, more .22 LR than .22 mag, but a fair amount for mag has been fired through both. They are both still tight and very accurate. There is no reason that my great grand children will not have the chance to experience shooting these.

Thank you all for the input. I did get in the Ruger, New Model Single six,Hunter.
My god, what a wonderful piece. I have only shot it in the backyard, with regular .22 ammo. I live in a 2 to 5 acre development, and 75 percent are pro gun, so plinking in the backyard is Okay. as long as you don't go crazy. I plan to soon go to the range and try out the .22 magnum. Luckily, I stocked up chock-to-block on ammo before the Internet cutoff. If you can, buy one of these. They are gorgeous! Thanks, Tommy

A guy was selling the rough rider and a single shot Hartfield 20 gauge shotgun. 2 boxes of 20 gauge bird shot, 2 boxes of 22 Magnum, one box of shorts and 2 boxes of 22LR ammo. 215.00 for everything. I met him at the Silverton, Bass Pro in Vegas. I showed him my CCW, and License, he showed me his CCW and we parted ways. The revolver had two boxes run through it and the shotgun, 8 rounds. I have not shot either one yet, soon.

My advice: buy a used Ruger single six or a new Ruger Wrangler. The three Heritage Rough Riders I've handled/shot had poor build quality and a rough mechanism. It pales in comparison to anything Ruger makes.
Don't skimp on quality because "it's a .22lr". You're already saving money on the ammunition and the initial cost of the firearm will be long-forgotten decades down the road. Putting the magnum cylinder in you'll notice the difference. Found it to be a lot of fun to shoot magnum rounds. A bit more peppier.
